Amanita rubescens

A robust woodland Amanita whose flesh slowly stains wine-pink to reddish-brown wherever it is cut, bruised or nibbled by insects, with a grooved ring and dirty pinkish-grey veil warts.
Overview
Amanita rubescens is the type species of Amanita section Validae, a group defined by non-marginate to weakly marginate stem bulbs, amyloid spores, and flesh that discolours in shades of pink, red or brown. It is one of the most abundant woodland Amanitas in Europe and is matched in North America by a set of closely related species including Amanita novinupta in the west and several eastern segregates.
The name refers to the species' defining behaviour rather than to a fixed colour. Any wound, whether from a knife, a slug or a burrowing larva, slowly develops a wine-pink to dull brick or reddish-brown stain, and the process spreads outward from the injury over minutes to hours. Old specimens are often pink-flushed throughout, particularly toward the stem base where insect damage accumulates.
It is a variable species in overall colouring, ranging from pale pinkish-buff through hazel to dark reddish-brown, and this variability means the structural characters of ring, bulb and staining matter far more than cap colour when placing a specimen.
How to identify it
Cap
5-15 cm across, convex then expanding to broadly flat, sometimes with a shallow umbo. The colour ranges from pale flesh-pink and hazel to reddish-brown or dull ochre-brown, often with pinkish tones developing in age. The surface carries numerous irregular, flattish, mealy to felty warts that are dirty white, grey-pink or greyish-buff rather than the crisp pure white of the Panther Cap. The margin is smooth or only very faintly grooved right at the extreme edge.
Gills
Free from the stem, crowded, moderately broad, white at first and typically becoming spotted and flecked with reddish-pink where damaged or in age. The gill edges are minutely fringed.
Stipe
6-15 cm tall and 1-3 cm thick, white at the apex and flushing pinkish downward, often with a pink or reddish-brown tone concentrated at and just above the base. The ring is large, white, membranous and pendulous, and is distinctly grooved or striate on its upper surface, a character best seen by tilting the specimen and looking at the top face of the skirt. The base is swollen into a club or turnip shape without a sharp collar-like rim, and usually carries a few scattered veil scales rather than a membranous sac.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh white, slowly turning wine-pink then dull reddish-brown where cut, bruised or tunnelled by larvae; the reaction is often strongest in the stem base. Smell faint. Spore print white; spores ellipsoid and amyloid.
Where and when it grows
The Blusher is ectomycorrhizal and grows on soil in both broadleaf and coniferous woodland, with oak, beech, birch, pine and spruce among its commonest partners. It tolerates a wide range of soils but is especially frequent on acid, sandy and well-drained ground, and appears in woodland, on heathy margins, along shaded rides and in parkland with mature trees.
It fruits from early summer through to late autumn and is one of the longest-seasoned Amanitas in temperate woodland, often appearing before most other members of the genus. The species in the strict sense is widespread across Europe and temperate Asia; North American material historically identified as A. rubescens is now distributed among several closely related segregate species, including the pale, pink-staining Amanita novinupta of the Pacific states.
Ecological role
As an ectomycorrhizal fungus it enfolds the fine root tips of its host in a hyphal mantle and forms a Hartig net between the outer root cells, exchanging soil-derived nitrogen, phosphorus and water for sugars from the tree. Its broad host range across both broadleaves and conifers helps explain why it is among the most frequently encountered Amanitas in mixed temperate woodland.
The fruiting bodies are heavily used by invertebrates: fungus gnat and fly larvae tunnel through the stem and cap flesh, and it is often this larval activity that produces the pinkish staining visible in a cut specimen before any knife has touched it. Decaying fruiting bodies are colonised by moulds and return their nutrients to the humus within a week or two.
Similar species
The Panther Cap (Amanita pantherina) is the closest structural counterpart and is separated by its pure white warts, strongly grooved cap margin, ungrooved ring, sharply collared bulb and flesh that stays white when cut. Amanita excelsa (Amanita spissa) also has a grooved ring but bears grey to grey-brown mealy patches, an ungrooved cap margin, a tapering rooting base, and flesh that does not redden.
In western North America Amanita novinupta is very similar and also blushes, but is generally paler, with a whiter cap ground colour and pinkish rather than brown tones. Amanita franchetii has yellow to olive-yellow veil warts and yellowish patches on the ring and bulb, and its flesh stains slowly brownish rather than clear pink. Where staining is uncertain, cutting a specimen lengthwise and leaving it for ten to twenty minutes makes the reaction unambiguous.
