The Sickener Identification Guide

A field-by-field walkthrough for recognising Russula emetica: the scarlet peeling cuticle, chalk-white brittle stipe, near-white spore print and boggy conifer setting that separate it from other red brittlegills.

The Setting You Are Standing In

Most encounters with the Sickener begin the same way: a splash of pillar-box red on a dark bed of conifer needles, spotted from several metres off. The habitat around you matters as much as the colour. This is a mushroom of damp, acidic ground — spruce and pine plantations, the boggy fringes of heathland, mossy track edges, and above all the sphagnum cushions and peaty hollows that hold water through late summer. If you are standing in a dry chalk beechwood, the red Russula at your feet is almost certainly something else.

Before you touch anything, read the posture of the fruitbody. Russula emetica grows singly or in scattered troops rather than in tight clusters. It stands upright on a straight, chalk-white stipe that often looks a size too slender for the cap it carries. There is no ring, no cobwebby veil, no sac or bulb at ground level. That combination — a vividly coloured cap over a plain, unadorned white stem — is the structural signature of the brittlegill group, and it is the first thing to confirm.

Reading the Cap

Start with size. Mature caps usually fall between 3 and 10 cm across. They begin convex, flatten out, and in age become shallowly depressed or even shallowly funnel-shaped in the centre. The colour is a clean scarlet, cherry or blood red. Rain and sun both work against it: washed specimens fade to rose, salmon or dirty pink, and sun-bleached patches can go ochre or nearly white. Never rest an identification on colour alone in this genus.

Now feel the surface. In damp weather the cap is smooth, slightly shining and distinctly greasy or tacky under the fingertips; in dry spells it goes matt. Then apply the single most useful cap test in the group — the peel. Pinch the cuticle at the margin and draw it back. In Russula emetica the red skin lifts away cleanly and travels almost the whole way to the centre, coming off in a broad sheet and leaving white flesh behind. Many other red brittlegills peel only a few millimetres in from the edge before tearing. A full, easy peel is a real character, not a formality.

Finally, examine the margin on a fully opened cap. It should be clearly grooved — short radial furrows running in from the edge, mirroring the gills beneath, giving a slightly knobbly or tuberculate-striate rim. Young buttons are smooth-margined, so judge this on an expanded specimen.

Gills, Stipe and Base

Turn the cap over. The gills are white to the very faintest cream, moderately spaced rather than crowded, fairly broad, and attached narrowly to the stipe or nearly free of it. They are almost all of equal length, with few short intermediate gills and little or no forking, and their edges are even. Run a fingertip across them: brittlegill gills feel rigid and slightly waxy, and they shatter rather than bend when you push against them.

The stipe is typically 4–9 cm long and 1–2 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly swollen downward, pure white and often finely wrinkled lengthwise. In older material it becomes hollow or chambered inside and may take on a dingy grey or faintly yellowish cast at the very base. Check the base itself: it is blunt, not rooting, with no bulb, no volval sac and no bracelets of scales — just white mycelial threads binding moss and needles.

Flesh and Colour Change

Snap the stipe in half rather than twisting it. It should break with a short, clean crack, like a stick of chalk or a crisp apple, with no fibrous strings left trailing. That brittleness comes from the nests of spherical cells built into the flesh, and it is the fastest way to place a mushroom in this group at all.

Cut a cap vertically. The flesh is white and fairly thin, with a narrow pink or reddish line showing just beneath the peeled cuticle. There is essentially no dramatic colour change on cutting: expect the cut faces to stay white, perhaps greying slowly in waterlogged, ageing specimens. Critically, no milky fluid appears when you slice the gills — that absence rules out the milkcaps, which look superficially similar in build.

Taking a Spore Print

Spore colour is the backbone of brittlegill identification, and the differences are graded rather than obvious, so the print has to be thick. Cut the cap free of the stipe, lay it gills-down on a sheet of white paper with a strip of clear glass or dark card under one edge, cover it with a bowl or a plastic box to hold humidity, and leave it four to twelve hours. Then scrape the deposit into a dense heap with a knife blade — a thin dusting always reads paler than the true colour.

Russula emetica drops a white to palest-cream print. Judged against the white paper it should look barely tinted at most. Anything running to deep cream, buff or ochre points you to a different species entirely.

Substrate and Season

This is a mycorrhizal partner of conifers, above all pine and spruce, so it emerges from soil, moss and needle litter rather than from wood. Look on acid, peaty, damp ground: sphagnum lawns, wet plantation rides, boggy woodland margins, mossy banks along forest tracks. It occasionally appears to grow on very rotten, moss-covered conifer stumps, but the mycelium is in the soil beneath. The season runs from summer through late autumn, and productive spots tend to fruit again year after year because the fungal partnership is anchored to the roots of living trees.

Separating the Look-alikes on Structure

Beechwood Sickener (Russula nobilis, syn. R. mairei) — the closest match in colour, but it grows with beech on richer soils, is smaller and firmer, has more crowded gills, and its cuticle peels only about half way to the centre.

Russula silvicola — the North American counterpart, generally with a longer, more slender stipe and a wider range of tree partners.

Bloody Brittlegill (Russula sanguinea) — grows with pine but has a stipe flushed pink or red rather than pure white, gills that run slightly down the stem, a cuticle that resists peeling, and a cream spore print.

Russula rosea and relatives — hard, dense flesh, a matt cap, pinkish tints on the stipe, and a cuticle that barely peels.

Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) — sometimes confused at a glance in the same habitat, but it has a ringed stipe, a bulbous base ringed with scaly girdles, free gills, fibrous non-brittle flesh, and white warts on the cap.

Milkcaps (Lactarius species) — equally brittle, but a drop of latex appears within seconds when the gills are cut.

A Working Checklist

  1. Damp, acidic conifer ground, often with sphagnum.
  2. Scarlet cap, greasy when moist, grooved at the margin in age.
  3. Cuticle peels cleanly almost to the centre.
  4. White, moderately spaced, brittle gills; no latex.
  5. Pure white stipe, no ring, no volva, snapping like chalk.
  6. White to palest cream spore print in a thick heap.

When all six line up in the right habitat, you have a confident field determination.

Common questions

What is the quickest field character for separating the Sickener from other red brittlegills?
The cuticle peel combined with the stipe colour. Pinch the cap edge and draw the red skin back: in Russula emetica it lifts away in a broad sheet almost to the centre, and the stipe underneath is pure chalk-white with no pink flush. Most other red brittlegills either resist peeling beyond the outer few millimetres or show pink tints on the stem.
What spore print colour should I expect?
White to the palest cream. Brittlegill spore colours are graded, so make the deposit thick by scraping it into a heap after four to twelve hours under a covered cap. If your print reads as clear buff or ochre, you are looking at a different Russula.
