The traditional name for the largest yellow morels, distinguished by a swollen, deeply furrowed and chambered stalk base beneath a broad ochre honeycomb cap. Specimens can exceed 25 cm in height.
Overview
The Thick-footed Morel has long been the field name for the giants of the yellow morel group: fruiting bodies with a broadly conical to bluntly rounded ochre cap sitting on a stout, deeply wrinkled and swollen stalk. The epithet crassipes simply means thick-footed, and the character it names is the most obvious thing about the fungus.
Modern taxonomy has complicated the picture. DNA studies of North American yellow morels have shown that very large, thick-stalked specimens turn up in several different lineages, including Morchella esculentoides and Morchella prava, and that gigantism is partly an expression of age, moisture and habitat rather than a species boundary in itself. As a result Morchella crassipes is now often treated as a form or an ambiguous name rather than a cleanly circumscribed species, while remaining thoroughly useful as a descriptive field term.
Whatever name is applied, the entity is recognisable: an over-sized, late-season yellow morel of rich deciduous ground with a foot that looks disproportionate to its cap.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is broadly conical, egg-shaped or bluntly rounded, often 6-15 cm tall and unusually wide, and fused to the stalk at its lower rim. Pits are large, deep and irregularly arranged in a true honeycomb rather than in neat rows. Colour ranges from pale cream and tan in young specimens through ochre-yellow to warm yellow-brown at maturity, with the ridges usually paler than the pit floors and never darkening to black.
Stipe
The stalk is the defining feature: white to cream or pale buff, very thick, and markedly swollen and expanded toward the base, which is deeply furrowed, wrinkled and often internally divided into folds and pockets. In large specimens the base may be several centimetres across and irregularly lobed. The surface is mealy to finely granular, and the interior is hollow but with the wall thrown into ridges and chambers near the bottom.
Flesh & spore deposit
The flesh is whitish, thin relative to the size of the fungus, and brittle; it may become watery and flabby in over-mature material but shows no strong colour change when cut. A spore deposit is cream to pale yellow.
Where and when it grows
Thick-footed morels grow in rich, moist deciduous woodland, especially on alluvial bottomland soils, river terraces and floodplain benches with deep leaf litter. Classic settings include stands of ash, elm, sycamore, cottonwood, tulip poplar and hickory, as well as old orchards, hedgerows and long-established garden ground with well-rotted organic matter. They often appear singly or in small scattered groups rather than in large troops.
Fruiting comes in the later part of the morel season, after the black morels and typically alongside or just after the ordinary yellow morels, from mid to late spring. Very large specimens tend to develop where soil moisture holds steady through the fruiting period. The entity is best documented in eastern and midwestern North America, with comparable giant yellow morels recorded in Europe and Asia.
Ecological role
Yellow morels are thought to shift between loose root associations with trees and outright decomposition of litter and buried wood, and the thick-footed form appears to lean toward saprotrophy on nutrient-rich organic soils. That would fit its habit of appearing around ageing or dying elms and fruit trees and in ground enriched by decades of leaf fall.
Sclerotia formed in the soil act as nutrient reservoirs; a large sclerotium can support an unusually massive fruiting body, which offers a straightforward explanation for gigantism in this group. Spores are discharged from the asci lining the pit surfaces and dispersed by air movement through the understorey. Ecologically the fungus is a significant recycler of woody and leafy debris in floodplain forests, returning locked-up carbon and minerals to the soil.
Similar species
The common yellow morel, Morchella esculentoides, is essentially the same fungus at ordinary size and differs mainly in its more slender, evenly cylindrical stalk with a base that is at most shallowly furrowed. Morchella prava has greyer pits, a more irregular and lumpy cap, and also develops a chambered base, but favours sandy riparian and disturbed ground. Morchella diminutiva is a much smaller, slender yellow morel with a narrow cap and thin stalk.
Black morels such as Morchella angusticeps are separated by their darkening, blackish ridges and narrower conical caps. Thimble fungi in Verpa differ fundamentally: their caps are attached only at the stalk apex and hang free, their surfaces are smooth or longitudinally wrinkled rather than pitted, and their stalks are stuffed with cottony pith.
