Tinder Conk Identification Guide
How to read Fomes fomentarius on a standing birch: the grey hoof shape and banded crust, the layered tube strata, and above all the soft felty cocoa-brown context that settles it against Ganoderma and Phellinus.
The Setting You Are Standing In
Finding this species is a matter of looking up rather than down. Tinder Conk lives on standing dead and dying trunks, most characteristically birch in northern regions and beech further south, with maple, poplar and sycamore as regular alternatives. Walk any mature birch woodland in winter, when the leaves are off and the bracket silhouettes stand out against pale bark, and you will spot them at two to ten metres up, jutting straight out from the trunk in a vertical row.
The first impression is architectural rather than fungal. The fruitbody is a hard, grey, hoof-shaped mass, broadly attached to the wood along its back, with a domed upper surface and a flat or slightly convex underside. Small ones are the size of a fist; large ones can reach 30 to 45 cm across and weigh several kilograms. Knock one with a knuckle and it responds with a dull, solid thud. Nothing about it flexes.
Because it is perennial, the same individual persists on the trunk for years, adding a new layer each season, so you can return to the same conk repeatedly and watch it grow.
Reading the Upper Surface
Work over the crust first. It is thick, hard and smooth to slightly rough, and it is marked with strong concentric ridges and furrows that run parallel to the margin. Each broad zone corresponds to a season's growth, and the pattern is stepped rather than merely banded — you can feel distinct shelves with a fingertip.
Colour runs from pale ash grey through grey-brown to nearly silver-grey in weathered old specimens, with darker bands picking out the older zones toward the point of attachment. Young growth at the margin is often warmer — ochre, tan or rusty brown — and forms a rounded, blunt rim rather than a thin edge. Algae frequently green the older parts, and moss sometimes colonises the upper surface on very old conks.
The overall profile is the crucial shape character: seen from the side, the fruitbody is thick and hoof-like, much deeper front-to-back near the trunk than at the margin, giving a strong three-dimensional wedge rather than a flat shelf.
The Spore-bearing Surface
The underside is a flat to slightly bulging pore surface, coloured pale grey-brown, buff or greyish-cream, sometimes with a faint pinkish or ochre cast when fresh. The pores are small and round, roughly 2 to 4 per millimetre, and even under a lens they look regular and neatly circular.
Rub the pore surface with a thumbnail. It may darken very slightly to a duller brown where scratched, but there is no immediate, strong colour reaction and no way to draw a clear line on it. That negative result matters when separating it from a common look-alike, as described below.
The Section: Where the Identification Is Made
Cut through a conk vertically with a stout blade or saw — the crust is hard enough to blunt a pocket knife — and the internal structure resolves the species.
Working from the top down you should see, in order: a hard dark crust several millimetres thick; then a distinctly soft, fibrous, felty layer of cocoa-brown to cinnamon-brown context, which can be teased apart into fine fibres and compressed like felt between finger and thumb; then, beneath that, the tubes. The tube layer is stratified — multiple distinct layers stacked one on the next, each a few millimetres deep, separated by thin partitions of the same brown context. Count them and you have a rough age in years. Old lower layers are often stuffed with white mycelium.
That combination — hard crust over soft felty brown context over stacked tube strata — is the diagnostic sequence. The context is not woody, not corky and not marbled with white flecks; it is uniformly brown and pliable, closer to thick felt than to timber.
Taking a Spore Print
Getting a print from a perennial bracket takes patience. Cut a wedge with an intact pore surface, prop it pore-side-down over dark card inside a sealed box with a damp tissue, and give it 24 hours in a warm room. The species is a prolific spore producer in spring and early summer, and at that time of year you can sometimes see the result without any effort at all: a white dusting on the bark and vegetation directly below an active conk on the trunk.
The deposit is white to very pale cream. This immediately separates it from the brown-spored bracket genera that share its build.
Substrate, Rot Type and Season
Tinder Conk is a white-rot decayer. Look at the wood it inhabits: infected trunks become pale, soft and spongy, and split billets often show fine black zone lines meandering through bleached wood. It colonises stressed, dying and freshly dead trees and continues fruiting on standing snags and, later, on fallen trunks lying on the woodland floor.
Birch is the signature host across northern Europe, Asia and North America; beech dominates in central and southern Europe. Because the fruitbody is perennial, it is present in every month of the year, and winter is arguably the best time to survey for it. Spore release peaks in spring and early summer.
Separating the Look-alikes on Structure
Artist's bracket (Ganoderma applanatum) — often on the same trees. It is flatter and more shelf-like than hoof-like, with a thinner and often lumpier crust, and its pore surface is chalky white, bruising instantly and permanently brown when scratched so that you can draw on it. In section its context is brown but studded with white pockets and streaks, and the tube layers are separated by thin white lines. The spore print is brown.
Willow bracket (Phellinus igniarius) — also hoof-shaped, but the crust is much harder, blackens with age and cracks into a rough chequerwork, the context is a hard, rigid, rusty or dark reddish-brown that cannot be compressed like felt, and the host is usually willow. Its pore surface is a duller cinnamon brown.
Red-belted bracket (Fomitopsis pinicola) — mostly on conifers, with a resinous crust banded in cream, orange-red and black, a whitish to cream pore surface, and a pale cream to buff context rather than brown.
Birch polypore (Fomitopsis betulina) — shares the birch host but is annual and completely different in build: kidney- or hoof-shaped with a smooth, thin, pale tan skin that peels away, a bright white pore surface, and soft white corky flesh throughout.
Sterile conk of Inonotus obliquus — also on birch, but it is a black, cracked, cinder-like irregular lump with no pore surface at all, and an orange-brown granular interior.
Trametes and other thin brackets — flat, flexible, thin, often zoned and annual, with a single tube layer and no felty brown context.
