Toad's Ear Identification Guide
A close-focus guide to Otidea bufonia: a dark umber ear split down one side, scurfy on the outside, rooted in leaf litter, and how to hold it apart from the paler ears in the same genus.
The Setting You Are Standing In
Toad's Ear is a fungus you find by slowing down. It grows on the woodland floor among fallen leaves, on humus and loamy or calcareous soil, under beech, oak, hornbeam and hazel, and sometimes under conifers on richer ground. It is small and it is dark, so it does not announce itself the way a red cap or a white bracket does; the usual way to find it is to be crouched over something else and notice a cluster of dark shapes standing up out of the leaf mould beside your hand.
The first impression is of something split. Each fruitbody is 2 to 5 cm tall, roughly the size and shape of an animal's ear, standing upright and cleft down one side from rim to base so that it never closes into a proper cup. The two edges of the split usually overlap slightly. One side of the ear is taller than the other, giving a lopsided, leaning outline. Several fruitbodies often grow with their bases fused into a tight tuft.
Reading the Inner Surface
The inner face — the concave side — is the fertile hymenium, and its colour is the species' calling card. It is dark: deep umber, chocolate brown, dark tobacco or nearly blackish-brown, sometimes with a faint olive cast when very fresh and wet. Old and dry material dulls but stays dark; it does not fade to ochre or tan.
The surface is smooth and even, without veins, wrinkles or ribs, and it is matt to slightly shining when moist. Look along the rim of the ear: the margin is entire and usually incurved, without teeth, hairs or fringes, and is often very slightly paler than the face below it.
Reading the Outer Surface, Base and Flesh
Turn the fruitbody over. The outer, convex surface is a dull brown, generally a shade or two lighter and greyer than the inside, and it is finely scurfy — under a hand lens the whole surface is covered in a fine granular or bran-like scurf rather than being smooth or hairy. That furfuraceous texture is worth confirming, since smooth-outside cup fungi belong elsewhere.
Follow the ear downward. It tapers to a short, narrow, stem-like base, often whitish or paler brown and clothed in fine white down at the very bottom, where a mat of white mycelium binds leaf fragments and soil into a small anchoring plug. Lift a fruitbody carefully and this whitish rooting base should come with it.
The flesh is thin, brittle and waxy-textured, brownish throughout, and it snaps cleanly rather than tearing in fibres. Cut one lengthwise and the section stays the same colour: there is no bleeding of latex, no milky fluid, no blueing or reddening. The absence of any colour change is itself informative, ruling out several superficially similar fleshy fungi.
Taking a Spore Deposit
This is an ascomycete, so the spores are shot from asci rather than dropped, and a conventional print behaves differently from a gilled mushroom's. The trick is to lay the fruitbody on its side with the fertile face angled over dark card in a closed, humid container, and leave it several hours. The deposit is white and sparse, so dark card is essential to see anything at all.
A quicker field confirmation is to breathe gently and warmly on a mature fruitbody, or to tap it: a fine white puff of spores may rise visibly from the fertile face, which is a satisfying way of confirming the group on the spot.
If you have a microscope, the genus becomes very tidy. Spores are smooth and elliptical, roughly 11 to 14 by 6 to 7 micrometres, each containing two conspicuous oil droplets. The paraphyses — the sterile threads between the asci — are slender and distinctly hooked or bent at their tips, curving like a shepherd's crook. That hooked paraphysis is the classic Otidea character.
Substrate and Season
Toad's Ear is a saprotroph of woodland litter and humus. It lives on decaying leaves, needle duff and the top layer of organic soil, and does not fruit on wood or dung. It shows a preference for base-rich and loamy soils, and is most consistently reported from mature broadleaved woodland with a deep leaf layer, particularly beech and oak, though mixed and coniferous stands on suitable soils also produce it.
The season is late summer through autumn, following steady rainfall, and it fruits in small scattered troops or clustered tufts rather than as isolated individuals. Because the colour matches wet leaf litter almost exactly, the most efficient way to survey is to look across a patch of ground at a low angle, so that upright ears break the horizontal plane of the litter.
Separating the Look-alikes on Structure
Donkey Ear (Otidea onotica) — the same split-ear shape and habitat, but wholly different in colour: the inner surface is a warm ochre-yellow flushed with apricot, salmon or pink, and the outside is yellow-brown. Nothing about it approaches umber.
Hare's Ear (Otidea leporina) — tawny to orange-brown or foxy inside, taller and narrower in outline, with a more slender, drawn-out ear. Clearly warmer-toned than Toad's Ear.
Otidea alutacea — the trickiest neighbour. It is larger, paler and duller — tan, leather-brown or greyish-brown — and expands more broadly so it is closer to an irregular split cup than to a narrow upright ear. Toad's Ear stays smaller, darker and more compressed.
Otidea concinna — bright yellow inside and out, an easy exclusion.
Peziza species — form regular, unsplit cups or shallow saucers that sit flat on the substrate, with no cleft down one side and generally no stem-like base. Many are larger and thicker-fleshed.
Helvella species — grey to blackish and sometimes lobed, but they are built as a distinctly stalked fungus with a saddle- or ear-shaped head on a well-developed stem, often ribbed or furrowed.
Wynnea species (North America and Asia) — superficially the same rabbit-ear outline but much larger, growing in dense rosettes from a hard buried mass, with a conspicuously ribbed and roughened outer surface.
