A small, drab, grey-brown fibrecap whose cap surface breaks up into ragged torn fibrils and scales. A pioneer of sandy tracks, heathland and young conifer plantations.

Overview

Torn Fibrecap takes its name from the shaggily lacerated surface of its cap, which splits and tears into upturned fibrous scales as it expands. It is one of the drabbest members of Inocybe, with muted hazel to grey-brown tones and none of the ochre warmth or violet flushes seen in some relatives, yet the ragged texture makes it reasonably distinctive once known.

The species is a classic pioneer of open, sandy and disturbed sites. It fruits along forestry tracks, on heathland paths, in dune slacks, on burnt or bare ground and among mosses in young conifer plantations, usually where mineral soil is exposed rather than deep in leaf litter. This ecological preference is itself a strong supporting character.

Microscopically it is noted for unusually long, smooth, cylindrical to sausage-shaped spores, considerably more elongated than in most fibrecaps, and for its distinctive thick-walled sterile cells on the gill edge. These features make it one of the easier species to confirm at the bench in an otherwise difficult genus.

How to identify it

Cap

1–4 cm across, convex to bell-shaped with a low broad umbo, expanding to almost flat. The surface is grey-brown, hazel or dull mid-brown, dry, and densely covered in coarse fibrils that break up into recurved, woolly or torn scales, especially toward the centre. The margin is often deeply split and ragged, sometimes with pale veil fragments hanging from it.

Gills

Adnexed, fairly crowded, pale grey-buff or dirty cream when young and maturing to olive-brown or clay-brown. The edges are conspicuously whitish and finely fringed, contrasting with the darker faces on mature specimens.

Stipe

2–5 cm tall and 2–6 mm thick, cylindrical and equal, without a bulb or rimmed base. It is pale brown to dull hazel, often paler and slightly powdery at the apex and fibrillose-scaly below, frequently with a faint whitish band or veil zone in the upper part. No ring is present.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is thin and pale brown, sometimes faintly reddish in the stipe base, unchanging or nearly so when cut. The odour is faint and earthy. The spore print is dull brown; the spores are smooth and unusually long and narrow, roughly cylindrical or slightly curved, an excellent confirming character under a microscope.

Where and when it grows

This is a fungus of open, disturbed, nutrient-poor ground rather than closed woodland. It appears on sandy tracks and firebreaks, heathland paths, dune systems, gravelly banks, quarry floors and among the moss and needle litter of young pine and spruce plantations. It is closely associated with pine and birch, and also with willow in damp sandy hollows.

Fruiting runs from midsummer to late autumn, often extending later than many woodland fibrecaps. It is widespread and locally common across Europe, boreal and temperate North America, and northern Asia, and is one of the fungi most reliably found on newly stabilised bare ground.

Ecological role

Torn Fibrecap is ectomycorrhizal, forming root sheaths chiefly with pine, birch and willow. As a pioneer partner it is important in the early establishment of trees on poor sandy and disturbed substrates, supplying young seedlings with nitrogen and phosphorus that would otherwise be inaccessible in mineral soil and improving their drought tolerance through an extended hyphal network.

Its frequency on tracks, burnt ground and reclaimed sites reflects a tolerance of compaction, low organic matter and full exposure that many woodland mycorrhizal fungi lack. Successive fruitings on the same track edge year after year indicate a long-lived underground mycelium associated with roots reaching in from the plantation margin.

Similar species

Inocybe rimosa is larger, paler and warmer straw-ochre, and its cap splits radially into smooth fibre bundles rather than breaking into shaggy recurved scales. Inocybe calamistrata has a comparable scaly texture but is darker, with a densely scaly stipe whose base is distinctly blue-green.

Small Hebeloma species such as Hebeloma mesophaeum share the drab brown tones and disturbed-ground habitat but have smooth, slightly greasy two-tone caps with a darker centre, never a torn fibrous surface. Tubaria furfuracea is similarly small and brown but has a hygrophanous, scurfy-margined cap, gills that run slightly down the stipe and an ochre-brown print.
