Turkey Tail Identification Guide

A field method for confirming Trametes versicolor on a hardwood log: concentric velvet bands, a thin flexible bracket, and the fine white pore surface that rules out most of its imitators.

The first impression

You are walking a damp hardwood woodland, along a stream bank or through a stand of felled timber, and a fallen log ahead of you is covered in what look like overlapping rosettes of thin, banded fans. From a few metres away the colours read as concentric rings of grey, tan, chestnut, blue-grey, ochre and sometimes green, with a clean pale edge running around every fan. That layered ring pattern on a wafer-thin bracket is the signature of Trametes versicolor.

Turkey Tail is gregarious to the point of covering whole surfaces. Individual caps fuse laterally into tiers, shelves and rosettes, and a single stump can carry hundreds. On a cut end or a vertical face the caps often arrange themselves into complete circles. On the underside of a log they grow in a flatter, more spreading form with only a short reflexed edge.

Reading the cap

Take a single fan in your hand. It should be 3 to 8 cm across, semicircular, fan-shaped or kidney-shaped, and above all thin: a mature cap is typically only 1 to 3 mm thick, including the flesh. Flex it. Fresh material is leathery and pliable and springs back; it does not snap like a corky bracket or squash like a soft one.

Now look at the surface with a lens. The concentric zones are not just colour bands. They alternate in texture too: some bands are finely velvety or silky-hairy, and the ones between them are smooth and almost polished, so that light catches them differently as you tilt the cap. That alternation of velvety and smooth zoning is the character that carries most of the weight in the field. Colour itself is wildly variable, which is what versicolor refers to, and you should not put much faith in any particular hue. What is consistent is the sharp, thin, wavy margin, which is usually paler than the rest of the cap and often pure white or cream in actively growing specimens.

The spore-bearing surface

Turn the fan over. This is where Turkey Tail is separated from most of its imitators, and it takes ten seconds. The underside must be a pore surface, not a smooth one. In good light and with a lens you should see tiny, round to slightly angular openings, roughly 3 to 5 per millimetre, so fine that the surface looks matt and suede-like to the naked eye. Colour is white to cream when fresh, ageing to buff, pale yellowish or dingy grey, and darkening where it has been bruised or has weathered.

Press a fingernail into the pore layer of a fresh specimen. The tubes are extremely shallow, well under a millimetre deep, sitting directly on a thin white flesh layer. If the underside is smooth, wrinkled, toothed, maze-like or gill-like, you are not looking at this species.

Flesh and attachment

Slice a cap in cross-section. You should find a single thin layer of tough, white, fibrous flesh, about a millimetre thick, with an equally thin tube layer beneath it and no dark line separating cap surface from flesh. The white context is important; a brown, ochre or duplex context points elsewhere.

There is no stipe. The bracket is attached broadly to the wood along one edge, sometimes narrowed to a small pinched point of attachment. The flesh is tough and fibrous throughout and does not exude any liquid when squeezed. Dried specimens become hard and slightly curled but rehydrate to something close to their original flexibility, which is why weathered brackets from last year can still be identified.

Spore print and microscopic backup

Getting a print from a thin bracket takes patience. Cut a piece with a fresh, actively growing white margin, and suspend it pore-side down over a sheet of dark paper or a glass slide, with a small support at each end so the pores are clear of the surface. Cover it and leave it overnight in a cool, humid spot; a plastic box with a damp paper towel works well. The print is white.

Under the microscope the spores are small, cylindrical and slightly curved, described as allantoid or sausage-shaped, about 4 to 6 by 1.5 to 2 micrometres, smooth and thin-walled. The hyphal system is trimitic, meaning the flesh contains generative, skeletal and binding hyphae, which is what gives the bracket its combination of thinness and toughness.

Substrate, season and ecology

Trametes versicolor is a saprotroph and a white-rot fungus. It colonises dead hardwood almost anywhere it can find it: fallen logs, stumps, standing dead trunks, large branches on the ground, cut ends of stacked timber, and fence posts and landscape timbers in gardens and parks. Oak, beech, birch, cherry, maple, willow and poplar are all regularly used. It occasionally appears on conifer wood but that is unusual enough to make you check other characters carefully.

As a white-rot organism it breaks down lignin as well as cellulose, leaving the residual wood pale, soft, fibrous and stringy. Peel back a colonised log and you often find a bleached zone with fine black demarcation lines separating the territories of competing individuals.

Fruit bodies are annual but tough and long-lasting, so they can be found in any month. New growth, with white margins and bright banding, appears mostly from late spring through autumn. Overwintered brackets are faded, often green with algae, and much less colourful, but retain the zoning texture and the fine pores.

Separating it from the look-alikes

Stereum ostrea and related Stereum species are the classic confusion. They are similar in size, shape and zoning, but the underside is completely smooth, with no pores at all, and is usually a warm buff or tan. Flipping the bracket over settles it immediately.

Trichaptum biforme shares the thin, zoned, gregarious habit but has a violet to purple tint on the pore surface and on the margin when fresh, and its pore layer soon breaks up into flattened teeth and jagged plates rather than staying regularly poroid.

Trametes hirsuta is thicker, stiffer and coated in coarse, shaggy grey-white hairs across the whole cap, with much weaker colour banding and a duller, greyish pore surface. Trametes pubescens is finely downy but essentially unzoned and uniformly whitish to cream.

Trametes ochracea is a genuine challenge. It is generally thicker in section, with broader and less numerous zones in warm ochre, tan and rust tones, and it lacks the strong alternation between velvety and shiny bands.

Bjerkandera adusta is thin and grey-capped but its pore surface is smoky grey and blackens with age or handling, and a section shows a dark line between the white flesh and the grey tube layer.

Lenzites betulina looks like a Turkey Tail from above, hairy and zoned, but the underside consists of thick, radiating, gill-like plates rather than pores.

Cerrena unicolor also mimics the profile but has a maze-like, tooth-edged pore surface and a thin dark line in the flesh just under the cap hairs.

What is the fastest way to confirm a Turkey Tail?
Turn it over and look at the underside with a hand lens. Trametes versicolor has a fine pore surface with roughly three to five small round pores per millimetre, white to cream when fresh. Then flex the bracket: it should be thin, leathery and springy, only a millimetre or two thick, with alternating velvety and smooth concentric zones on top and a pale sharp margin.
How do I tell it from the so-called false turkey tail?
Stereum ostrea and its relatives look almost identical from above but have a completely smooth, poreless underside, usually buff to tan. Turkey Tail always has visible pores. Stereum brackets also tend to be a little stiffer, with a more uniformly silky upper surface rather than the distinct velvet-and-shine band alternation of Trametes versicolor.
What wood does it grow on and when?
It is a saprotroph of dead hardwood: fallen logs, stumps, standing dead trunks, large branches, stacked timber and garden posts, especially oak, beech, birch, cherry, maple and willow. Conifer records exist but are uncommon. Fresh growth appears mainly from late spring to autumn, though the tough brackets persist year-round and faded, algae-covered specimens can be found in any month.
What does it do to the wood?
It causes a white rot, degrading lignin along with cellulose and leaving the wood pale, soft, stringy and fibrous. Colonised logs often show bleached zones bounded by thin black demarcation lines where neighbouring individuals of the fungus meet, and heavily rotted wood eventually crumbles into a pale fibrous mass that is rapidly recycled into the forest floor.
