A small pear-shaped puffball of mossy conifer woodland, clothed in slender dark brown spines and opening by a neat apical pore. The interior matures from white to umber-brown powder.
Overview
The Umber-brown Puffball is one of the darker members of the genus Lycoperdon, the classic pear-shaped puffballs that release spores through a small hole at the top. Fruiting bodies are modest, typically 2-4 cm across, with a rounded head tapering downwards into a short, wrinkled, stalk-like sterile base rooted among moss and needle litter.
The genus Lycoperdon belongs to the Agaricaceae and is defined by this shape and by the apical pore: as the interior dries into powder, the top of the skin thins and tears open to leave a circular mouth through which raindrops and wind puff out spores. L. umbrinum stands out within the genus for its dark colouring, its slender, sometimes converging brown spines and its strong preference for acid, mossy conifer ground.
Because several small brown Lycoperdon species overlap in size and shape, colour of both the spines and the mature interior, together with substrate, does most of the identification work.
How to identify it
Fruiting body
Subglobose to broadly pear-shaped or top-shaped, 2-4 cm wide and about as tall, narrowing below into a short sterile base. The ground colour is pale cream at first, quickly becoming cinnamon-brown, then dark umber-brown to almost chocolate with age.
Surface ornament
Covered in slender, erect to slightly curved spines that are dark brown from an early stage, often grouped so that several tips converge. Between and beneath the spines lie finer granules. As the spines wear off they leave a faintly netted or shallowly pitted surface rather than the bold pale pockmarks seen in some relatives.
Stipe
No true stipe. The lower part narrows into a wrinkled, often slightly furrowed sterile base attached to the substrate by white mycelial threads.
Flesh and spore mass
The upper interior is white and firm when young, then yellowish, then olive and finally dark umber to purplish-brown powder. The sterile base remains chambered and spongy, and is usually distinctly tinged brownish or purplish rather than pure white. A neat circular pore opens at the apex at maturity. Spores in mass are umber to olive-brown.
Where and when it grows
Grows on soil, moss cushions and deep needle litter in coniferous and mixed woodland, favouring acid, sandy or peaty ground; it also occurs on heaths, among Vaccinium and heather, and on old mossy stumps and woody debris. It is often gregarious, with several fruiting bodies clustered together.
Widespread across the temperate northern hemisphere, including much of Europe and northern North America, and typically most abundant from late summer through autumn until the first hard frosts.
Ecological role
The Umber-brown Puffball is saprotrophic, decomposing conifer needle litter, moss and fragments of buried rotten wood. It plays a part in the slow breakdown of the acidic, resin-rich litter layer typical of pine and spruce forests, where decomposition is comparatively unhurried.
Dispersal depends on the apical pore. When the interior has dried to powder held in a mesh of capillitium threads, the elastic skin acts as a bellows: each raindrop striking the top squeezes out a small cloud of spores, which is why puffballs release their spores in short bursts over many weeks.
Similar species
Lycoperdon perlatum is generally paler and creamier with stout conical warts among finer granules; when those warts drop away they leave a distinct pattern of pale pockmarks, and its mature interior is olive-brown rather than dark umber. Lycoperdon molle is a softer mid-brown with granular, easily rubbed spines and a more powdery look. Lycoperdon nigrescens (also treated as L. foetidum) has dark brown spines with paler tips arranged in converging groups and a coffee-brown mature interior, and it is often more slender.
Bovista species can look similar at a distance but are nearly spherical without a stalk-like sterile base, and their smooth inner skin is exposed as the white outer layer flakes away.
