A tiny stalkless white fungus that grows in numbers on the underside of dead twigs and stems, its felted fan-shaped cap paired with a distinctive pale pinkish-brown spore print.
Overview
The Variable Oysterling is one of the smallest and most abundant wood-litter fungi of temperate woodland, and one that is nearly always found by turning over fallen sticks rather than by scanning at eye level. It belongs to Crepidotus, a genus of stemless, laterally attached gilled fungi with brownish spores.
Within the genus this species stands out for its consistently white, softly felted cap and its very small size, rarely exceeding two centimetres. The specific name variabilis refers to the changeable outline of the fruit body, which may be fan-shaped, kidney-shaped, shell-shaped, tongue-like or almost circular depending on how it emerges from the twig.
It is a good demonstration of the reduced fruit body strategy: with no stem to build and only a shallow layer of gill tissue, the fungus can produce a spore-bearing surface on a substrate no thicker than a pencil.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is only 0.5-2 cm across, sessile or attached by a minute lateral point, and variable in shape from fan- and kidney-shaped to almost round or tongue-like. The upper surface is white to ivory, occasionally ageing pale cream, and is finely downy or felted rather than smooth. The margin is thin, incurved when young, and frequently lobed or wavy.
Gills
Gills radiate from the attachment point, are moderately well spaced, and start pure white. As spores mature they take on a distinctive pale pinkish-buff to pale cinnamon tone, which is one of the more reliable characters in the field.
Stipe
Absent, or reduced to a barely perceptible lateral stub. A small tuft of white mycelium usually marks the attachment to the twig.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is very thin, soft and white, unchanging when cut, and the cap cuticle is dry and downy with no gelatinous layer. The spore print is pale pinkish-brown, noticeably paler and pinker than in most relatives.
Where and when it grows
This fungus specialises in slender dead plant material. It fruits on fallen twigs, small branches, brambles, dead herbaceous stems, old bracken stalks and woody litter of many kinds, usually on the shaded underside where humidity is highest. Beech, hazel, ash, willow and bramble are all common hosts, and it is not fussy about tree species.
It is widespread and common across Europe and North America and occurs in most temperate woodland, hedgerow and scrub habitats. Fruiting is heaviest from late summer through autumn and continues into mild winter weather, with the tiny fruit bodies often appearing in large numbers along a single stick.
Ecological role
The Variable Oysterling is a saprotroph and a specialist of fine woody litter. Its mycelium colonises the thin bark and outer wood of twigs and dead stems, breaking down the tissue and helping to reduce the layer of small debris that accumulates on the woodland floor. This size class of litter is turned over far faster than large logs, and fungi like this species drive that rapid cycling.
Because the fruit bodies are so small, they depend on close contact with humid air near the ground. Spores released from the underside of a twig disperse only short distances but reach the abundant surrounding litter easily, so a single wood can carry the fungus on thousands of sticks simultaneously.
Similar species
Crepidotus mollis is far larger, buff to tan rather than white, grows on logs and stumps rather than twigs, has a snuff-brown spore print, and has a gelatinised cap skin that stretches elastically when peeled. Crepidotus cesatii is similar in size and whiteness but has a more rounded outline attached at a central-ish point on the rear edge and duller, browner spores.
Cheimonophyllum candidissimum is another tiny white stalkless species, but it gives a pure white spore print rather than pinkish-brown and its gills stay white. Very young Schizophyllum commune can also be whitish and stemless, but its gill-like folds are split down their length and its cap surface is coarsely hairy rather than softly downy.
