The most spectacular stinkhorn, with a delicate white lace veil that unfurls from beneath the conical head and may hang almost to the ground. A tropical and subtropical species of rich soil and bamboo litter.

Overview

The Veiled Lady is unmistakable. From a white egg buried in leaf litter rises a hollow, spongy white stalk carrying a conical, slime-covered head, and from beneath that head drops a wide, net-like white skirt — the indusium — which can extend for much of the stalk's length or reach the ground in the finest specimens. The lacy mesh expands within minutes to an hour as the fruiting body matures, making this one of the few fungi whose development is visible in real time.

Phallus indusiatus belongs to the Phallaceae and shares the family's egg-to-stalk development and its reliance on insects rather than air currents for spore transport. Older literature often places veiled species in the genus Dictyophora, now generally treated within Phallus.

It is a fungus of warm regions, widespread through tropical Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas, and strongly associated in Asia with bamboo groves, where it fruits abundantly on the deep litter of fallen culms and leaves. Its combination of size, whiteness and lace makes it one of the most photographed fungi in the world.

How to identify it

Egg stage

A smooth, roughly egg-shaped body 3–6 cm across, whitish to pale pinkish or buff, partly buried in litter and attached below by white rhizomorph cords. Cut lengthwise it shows a gelatinous layer, the compressed stalk, the folded indusium and a dark olive gleba layer over the head.

Stalk

White, hollow, 10–25 cm tall and 1.5–3 cm thick, cylindrical, tapering slightly at each end, with a spongy chambered wall of large pits. The base sits in a loose, sac-like white volva, the ruptured egg remains.

Indusium

The defining feature: a white, net-like skirt of polygonal meshes hanging from beneath the head. In this species it is long, often reaching most of the way down the stalk or flaring outwards onto the ground, and its mesh is fine and lacy. It expands rapidly after the head clears the egg.

Head

Conical to bell-shaped, 2.5–5 cm tall, with a surface raised into a network of ridges and pits and a small pale perforate disc at the apex. The head is coated in dark olive to olive-brown, sticky gleba when fresh, and appears pale and reticulate once insects have removed the slime.

Spores

Spores are carried in the gleba rather than shed dry; they are minute, smooth and ellipsoid, and the mass appears olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

Phallus indusiatus fruits in warm, humid conditions on rich, humus-laden soil and deep leaf litter. Its most celebrated habitat is bamboo groves, where the abundant fallen culms and leaves provide ideal substrate, but it also grows in gardens, plantations, secondary forest, woodland margins, mulched beds and disturbed ground with plentiful organic matter.

It is widely distributed through the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa, Australia, Central and South America and the Caribbean, extending into warm-temperate regions in some areas. Fruiting is triggered by heavy rain during the warm season, and fruiting bodies characteristically emerge in the early morning, expand within a couple of hours and collapse by the same afternoon.

Ecological role

The species is saprotrophic, its mycelium decomposing bamboo litter, leaves, buried wood and other plant remains in warm, moist soil. Networks of white cords radiate through the litter layer and terminate in the developing eggs, which sit just at or below the surface until conditions trigger expansion.

Insects perform the dispersal. As the gleba liquefies it produces a strong, fetid odour that quickly attracts flies, beetles and ants. They crowd onto the slimy head, feeding and becoming coated with spores, which are then carried to fresh substrate on their bodies or voided after passing through the gut. The wide white indusium is thought to serve as a visual signal and a landing platform that guides insects up towards the head, adding a visual channel to the chemical one.

Similar species

Other veiled stinkhorns are the main comparison. Phallus duplicatus of eastern North America has a much shorter indusium, hanging only partway down the stalk with coarser meshes, and a stouter overall build. Phallus multicolor and related tropical species can carry yellow to orange stalks or indusia rather than pure white. Phallus merulinus and its allies have shorter, more delicate veils.

Veil-less stinkhorns are easily separated: Phallus impudicus and Phallus hadriani have the same pitted head and white spongy stalk but no indusium at all, while Mutinus species are slender, orange or pink, and lack a distinct free-margined head. Unexpanded eggs can resemble puffballs, but a vertical cut reveals the layered gelatinous interior with a dark gleba band and the folded net of the veil.
