Veined Cup Identification Guide

Recognising the big brown spring disc of damp alluvial ground by its raised vein network, pale mealy underside, bleach-like odour and large smooth spores.

Where and When You Meet It

Veined Cup is an early-spring fungus, and finding it is largely a matter of being in damp lowland ground in March, April or May, before most of the mushroom season has begun. The classic setting is alluvial soil: river and stream banks, damp poplar, ash and willow stands, wet flushes in hedge bottoms, muddy path edges, old orchards and woodland edges on rich or calcareous ground. It frequently shares that ground and that season with morels.

The first impression is deeply unhelpful, which is why the species is under-recorded. From two metres away, a mature specimen sitting flat on wet soil looks like a dead leaf, a scrap of bark or a patch of mud. You spot it by the texture rather than the colour: an irregular, wavy brown disc with a wrinkled surface, half sunk into the ground, sometimes 15 cm or more across.

Shape, and How It Changes

Young fruit bodies are proper cups, 2 to 5 cm across, deep and neatly bowl-shaped with an incurved margin. As they expand they flatten out into a broad, irregular, saucer-like or almost plate-flat disc, 5 to 15 cm across and occasionally over 20 cm, with a margin that becomes lobed, wavy, split and often torn.

Feel underneath. There is a very short, thick, stem-like base, usually buried in the soil and rarely visible until you excavate it, and the fruit body sits almost directly on the ground. Lift it out whole rather than tearing the margin, because the presence of that rudimentary rooting base is part of the description.

The Fertile Surface

This is where the name comes from and where the identification is made. The upper, inner surface is the hymenium, and it is coloured ochre-brown, date-brown, chestnut or dark umber, darkening as it matures.

Crucially, it is not smooth. It carries coarse, blunt, radiating ridges and folds that branch and join into a raised network, strongest toward the centre of the disc and fading toward the margin. Held at a low angle to the light, the relief is obvious: a brain-like or vein-like sculpture standing proud of the surface. On very young cups the veining is faint, so a small specimen may need a hand lens and a second look.

The outer, lower surface is completely different: whitish to cream or pale buff, dull, and finely granular or mealy under a lens, described as furfuraceous. The contrast between a dark veined inner face and a pale scurfy outer face is a good quick check.

Flesh and Odour

The flesh is thin, brittle, waxy in texture and whitish to pale brown. It snaps rather than tears, and a fruit body carried loose in a bag arrives as fragments; box it.

Now smell a freshly broken piece, and smell it immediately. This species has a distinct chlorine or bleach odour, sometimes faint in cold weather and sometimes strong enough to notice as you kneel down. Odour is a rare and genuinely useful character among the cup fungi, and combined with the veining and the season it is close to conclusive.

Getting a Spore Deposit

This is an ascomycete, so spores are shot forcibly from the asci rather than dropping passively. That changes the technique.

Rest the fruit body hymenium-downward across the mouth of a jar or over a sheet of white card in a covered container, and leave it a few hours in a cool, humid place. The deposit is white to cream. Alternatively, bring a fresh specimen into warm air, breathe gently on the hymenium and watch against a dark background: a synchronised discharge produces a visible puff of spores like a wisp of smoke, which is both characteristic of the group and satisfying to see.

Microscopically the spores are large, smooth, hyaline and broadly ellipsoid, about 19 to 25 by 12 to 15 micrometres, and, importantly, without oil droplets inside. The paraphyses have brownish granular contents that account for the colour of the hymenium. The asci are inamyloid, meaning their tips do not turn blue in an iodine reagent such as Melzer's or Lugol's; this single test separates the species from the true Peziza cups, whose ascus tips do blue.

Substrate and Season

The fungus is a saprotroph of rich, damp mineral soil, particularly alluvium deposited by flooding and soils with a calcareous component. It is not a wood species and it is not a partner of living trees, though it favours the moist shade under poplar, willow, ash and hedgerow trees.

The season is short and early. Fruiting typically runs from late February in mild regions through to May, peaking with the same warm, wet spells that bring out morels, and the fruit bodies persist only a couple of weeks before insects and slugs reduce them.

Working Through the Look-alikes

The genuinely similar fungi are all cup-shaped brown discomycetes, and morphology sorts them.

Peziza species, including P. varia, P. vesiculosa and P. badia, are the main confusion. Their hymenium is essentially smooth, or at most gently undulating, without the strong branching vein network. They typically grow on woodchip, compost, dung, burnt ground or rotten wood rather than on bare alluvial soil, they lack the bleach odour, and their ascus tips turn blue in iodine. Peziza badia additionally has warted spores containing two oil drops.

Discina ancilis, also treated in Gyromitra, is the closest true match in appearance: a broad brown veined disc. Separate it by substrate, since it grows on or beside rotting conifer wood in coniferous forest, and by its spores, which are ornamented and carry pointed apiculi at each end. It has no bleach odour.

Morchella species are the other confusion, especially since they share the season and the ground. A morel has a hollow, stalked, pitted and ridged head that forms a closed chamber continuous with the hollow stem. A flattened Veined Cup is an open disc with no stem and no enclosed cavity; cut both vertically and the difference is immediate.

Verpa species have a thimble-like head hanging free from the top of the stalk, attached only at the apex.

Helvella acetabulum is deeply cup-shaped and greyish, and its short stout stem carries sharp ribs that run up onto the outside of the cup, a very different structure from a simple buried base. Aleuria, Melastiza and Scutellinia are bright orange or red and much smaller, and Scutellinia carries stiff dark marginal hairs.

Common questions

What are the veins, and how obvious should they be?

On a mature flattened disc they are unmistakable in low-angled light. On a young cup the sculpture is much weaker, so small specimens need a hand lens and a second look before ruling the species out.
How do I separate it from a Peziza cup?
Three ways on structure. The hymenium here is strongly veined rather than smooth; the flesh has a distinct chlorine-like odour when broken; and the substrate is bare damp mineral soil rather than woodchip, compost, dung or burnt ground. With a microscope, the asci are inamyloid and the spores lack oil droplets, whereas Peziza ascus tips turn blue in iodine.
When and where does it fruit?
Early spring, roughly late February to May, on rich damp ground: river and stream banks, alluvial soil, wet hedge bottoms, muddy path edges and damp poplar, willow and ash stands, often on calcareous soils. It commonly shares its ground and season with morels, so spring morel habitat is the place to search.
Is it connected to tree roots?
No. It is a saprotroph living on rich, moist mineral soil and buried plant debris, particularly silt deposited by flooding, rather than a mycorrhizal partner of the trees above it. The trees matter only because they provide the shade, humidity and leaf litter that keep the soil in the condition it needs.
