Velvet Bolete Identification Guide
Working out the dry felted pine bolete in the field: tawny velvety cap, unusually dark olive-brown pores, a ringless dotless stipe and a snuff-brown spore print.
The Habitat Sets the Expectation
Velvet Bolete is a pine specialist, and the habitat narrows the identification before you have touched the mushroom. Picture dry sandy heathland with scattered Scots pine, an acid podzol under a plantation, coastal dune pine, or a mossy bilberry floor in boreal pine forest. Fruit bodies come up singly or scattered through the moss and heather, sometimes in loose troops, from midsummer through autumn and, in mild maritime areas, into early winter.
The first impression is of a solid, dry-looking, tawny-ochre bolete with a slightly dusty or felted cap that lacks any of the glistening slime you expect from its relatives. Roll it out of the moss and the second impression follows: the pores underneath are surprisingly dark, olive-brown rather than the bright yellow of most pine boletes, and the stipe is plain, without a ring and without spotting.
Reading the Cap
Cap width is 5 to 14 cm, occasionally more, hemispherical at first and expanding to convex or nearly flat, with a thick, firm build and an even margin that carries no veil remnants.
Colour runs through ochre-yellow, sandy-tawny, orange-brown and rusty-buff, often paler at the margin.
The surface is the character. It is dry and finely tomentose, a short woolly or felted covering that under a lens breaks up into minute darker granules and appressed scales, giving the cap a matt, velvety, faintly speckled look. In persistently wet weather the cap can become slightly tacky, but it never develops the thick slime layer of the sticky-capped pine boletes, and the felt is still detectable at the margin. Run a dry thumb over it: it drags rather than slides.
The Pore Surface
Boletes are read from below, so turn it over.
The tubes are short, adnate to slightly decurrent at the stipe, and olive-toned throughout. The pore mouths are small and round, roughly 1 to 2 per millimetre, and their colour is the key: olive-buff and olive-ochre when young, becoming dark cinnamon-olive to olive-brown with age. They are noticeably darker than the cap, which is unusual in this group and is one of the fastest field checks.
Press a thumb into the pores and wait a minute. The surface bruises slowly to a dull blue-green or dirty greenish-blue. The reaction is real but restrained; it is not the instant vivid blue of some boletes.
Stipe and Base
The stipe is 5 to 9 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm thick, stout, cylindrical or slightly swollen at the base, and firm.
Colour is pale ochre-yellow to buff, often flushed rusty or reddish-brown toward the base. The surface is dry and smooth to faintly fibrillose.
Two negatives matter enormously here. There is no ring and no veil zone of any kind. And there are no glandular dots, the tiny sticky darkened specks that pepper the stipes of many of its close relatives when they age; look with a lens under good light. A plain, dotless, ringless stipe on a dry felted pine bolete is a strong combination.
The base is attached to a mass of white to pale mycelial strands binding sand and needle litter.
Flesh and Colour Change
Halve the fruit body from cap centre to stipe base with one clean cut and watch it for two minutes.
The flesh is firm and pale yellow, deeper yellow in the stipe apex and often rust-flushed in the stipe base. On cutting it stains faintly blue, most clearly in the cap flesh directly above the tube layer and sometimes in the stipe apex, then fades to a dull greyish or brownish tone. Again the reaction is weak and slow; a fruit body in dry weather may barely react at all, so do not treat the absence of strong blueing as evidence against the species.
The odour is faint and slightly chemical, often described as iodine-like or reminiscent of a hospital corridor, most noticeable in the stipe base of mature material.
Spore Print
Lay a mature cap pore-side down on white paper under a bowl overnight. The deposit is olive-brown, snuff-brown or dull ochre-brown, and takes a few hours to build because the pores are small. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, thin-walled and subfusiform, roughly 8 to 11 by 3 to 4 micrometres.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus and its partners are two-needle pines: Scots pine above all, and also black pine and maritime pine in planted stands. The soil is characteristically acid, sandy, nutrient-poor and freely draining, which is why heath, dune and podzol pine woods are the productive habitats. It does not partner with broadleaf trees and only rarely appears under spruce.
The mycelium sheathes the fine roots of its host, trading mineral nutrients and water for sugars, and it produces abundant mycelial cords through the litter layer. Fruiting is from July to November, driven by rain after warm weather, and productive patches recur in the same spots for years.
Separating the Look-alikes
Suillus bovinus shares the habitat exactly and is the commonest confusion. Its cap is smooth, distinctly viscid and pinkish-buff to ochre, its pores are wide, angular and compound, with small pores nested inside larger ones, and they run down the stipe. The pore structure alone settles it: wide compound angular pores versus small round dark ones.
Suillus granulatus, S. luteus and S. grevillei all have markedly viscid to glutinous caps and yellow pores, and they carry either a ring on the stipe, glandular dots, or both. Any of those characters rules out Velvet Bolete.
Xerocomus subtomentosus and its relatives have a velvety cap, but it is olive-brown to buff and typically cracks to show yellow flesh in the fissures, the pores are large, angular and bright golden-yellow, and the trees are usually broadleaf.
Chalciporus piperatus is much smaller and more slender, with rusty-cinnamon decurrent pores and a chrome-yellow stipe base, growing with birch and pine.
Leccinum species have coarse dark scabers ornamenting the stipe like stubble, which no Suillus has.
Members of Boletus in the strict sense are stouter still, with white then yellow pores that never darken to olive-brown in the same way, and a raised network of pale reticulation over at least the upper stipe.
