Velvet Rollrim Identification Guide

A step-by-step identification workflow for Tapinella atrotomentosa: where to search, which characters to check in which order, and how to rule out every close structural match by morphology alone.

Where the Search Begins

Rather than scanning the forest floor, work the dead wood. In conifer plantations and older managed pinewoods, walk the line of old felling stumps, the edges of forestry tracks, and the mounds where root plates were pushed aside. This species announces itself by scale: even before you can resolve any detail, a mature fruit body reads as an unusually massive, dull-rust lump attached low down on decaying softwood. The silhouette is squat and heavy-shouldered, with the cap projecting sideways because the stalk is rarely central.

A useful habit is to check the same stumps in successive weeks and successive seasons. Because the fungus is decomposing a large, slow-decaying resource, it tends to reappear on the same stumps year after year, and knowing three or four productive stumps in a wood is more efficient than random searching.

Character One: Cap Architecture

Measure and describe before you touch anything else.

Size runs large, commonly twelve to twenty centimetres across and sometimes considerably more, with cap flesh thick enough to feel like a slab rather than a sheet. Outline is rarely regular — expect lobed, wavy, kidney-shaped or eccentrically expanded caps, especially where several fruit bodies have crowded each other on a stump face.

Surface finish is dry, dull and finely felted, with no trace of gloss or slime in any weather. Colour is a muted rust to ochre-brown, sometimes with a warmer tawny margin and a deeper umber disc. As the fruit body ages the felt thins and the cap surface may crack into a coarse mosaic of plates, particularly at the centre.

The margin is the character to lock in. It curves under sharply and stays that way for most of the fungus's life, producing a thick, rubbery lip that conceals the outermost gills. Even in aged specimens where most of the rim has flattened, a section of the circumference generally keeps the roll.

Character Two: The Hymenium

Beneath the cap you will find crowded, narrow, pale ochre to buff gills that descend the stalk rather than terminating at it. Follow individual gills inwards with your eye and you will see them divide repeatedly and link across into a shallow anastomosing network near the stalk apex, so the surface there looks vein-like rather than plated.

Apply the sheet test. Slip a fingernail beneath the gills at the cap edge and lift gently upward and inward. The correct result is that the entire gill layer detaches from the underlying cap flesh in one continuous sheet, leaving a smooth pale cap underside behind. This behaviour is shared with only a small group of relatives and eliminates the great majority of brown-spored wood fungi in a single motion.

Damaged gill surfaces darken to a dull rusty brown over several minutes. The change is gradual and modest, not the vivid instant reaction some genera show.

Character Three: The Stalk

This is where the name comes from and where the identification is effectively closed.

Expect a stalk that is short in proportion to the cap, frequently only four to eight centimetres long, but exceptionally thick — often three centimetres or more in diameter, sometimes swelling towards a root-like base. Attachment is usually off-centre and can be nearly lateral.

The covering is a dense, dark chocolate-brown to blackish velvet, thick enough to feel plush under the thumb and dramatically darker than the cap above it. It runs the full length of the stalk, right down into the wood or soil. No ring, no ring zone, no volva, no basal cup.

When you collect a specimen, dig or lever the base out rather than snapping the stalk. The buried portion often reveals the decayed root or stump fragment the fungus is feeding on, which converts an assumed terrestrial habit into a confirmed lignicolous one.

Character Four: Flesh and Internal Colour

Halve the fruit body vertically. Look for: thick, firm, whitish to pale cream flesh; a solid, fibrous, unhollowed stalk interior; and no more than a slow, faint brownish or greyish dulling of the cut faces over ten or twenty minutes. There is no latex, no blueing, no red flush, and no strong odour. If the interior is hollow, or if it changes colour rapidly and vividly, reconsider the identification.

Character Five: The Spore Deposit

Sever the cap from the stalk, set it gills down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to prevent draughts and drying, and leave it. Large fleshy caps of this species usually deposit visibly within two hours and heavily overnight. Let the deposit dry, push it into a small pile with a blade, and assess it in daylight against the white paper.

The expected result is a warm yellowish clay-brown to olive-tinged brown. Compare deliberately against the two commonest confusions: a purple-brown deposit would point to the Stropharia and Hypholoma alliance, and a bright ferruginous orange-rust would point to Gymnopilus. Neither matches.

Substrate and Season

The fungus is a saprotroph of conifer wood. Its typical resource is a stump, a root plate, buried roots, or a large fallen trunk section of pine or spruce in an advanced state of decay. It fruits from midsummer through autumn, favouring humid spells, and fruit bodies frequently appear in tight groups of several individuals fused or crowded at the base because they arise from a shared patch of colonised wood. Because the wood may lie entirely below ground, specimens can look as if they are growing from soil; the excavation habit described above resolves this every time.

Ruling Out the Look-alikes

Start with the same genus. Tapinella panuoides shares the peelable, crowded, forking gills but is fan- or shell-shaped, sessile or with a stubby lateral attachment, much thinner-fleshed, and typically found on sawn conifer timber, joinery and posts. No stalk means no velvet, and the size difference is enormous.

Next, the brown roll-rim, Paxillus involutus. It reproduces the inrolled margin and the detachable decurrent gills, so the two are genuinely confusable at the level of the cap underside. Separate them on the stalk and the setting: Paxillus involutus has a comparatively slender, smooth, cap-coloured stalk with no dark furry covering, arises from soil in partnership with living broadleaved trees, especially birch, and shows a more pronounced reddish-brown bruising on the gills.

Phyllotopsis nidulans is hairy and might catch the eye of someone keying on texture, but it is bright orange, stalkless, shelf-like and pink-spored.

Scaly wood fungi of Pholiota and Gymnopilus occupy the same stumps. Rule them out on three points: their gills are adnate or notched rather than long-decurrent, the gill layer cannot be peeled off as a sheet, and most retain veil remnants or a ring zone on the stalk. Their spore deposits are also brighter and more orange.

Finally, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca has forked decurrent gills and can grow on conifer debris, but it is small, thin-fleshed, bright orange throughout, with a slim smooth stalk and a whitish spore print.

Confirming the Identification

A specimen is confirmed when all of the following hold simultaneously: massive dry rusty felted cap; persistently inrolled margin; crowded decurrent forking gills forming a network near the stalk; gill layer peelable as one sheet; short, very thick, often eccentric stalk clothed in blackish velvet; firm pale unchanging flesh; yellowish clay-brown spore deposit; and conifer wood as the substrate, visible or buried.

Common questions

Which characters, checked in order, confirm a Velvet Rollrim?
Cap first: large, dry, rusty and felted with a strongly inrolled margin. Then the underside: crowded decurrent gills that fork into a network near the stalk and peel away from the cap flesh as one intact sheet. How does it differ from the scaly Pholiota and Gymnopilus species on the same stumps?
Those genera have gills that are attached or notched rather than deeply decurrent, their gill layer cannot be lifted off the cap as a sheet, most keep a ring or a ring zone from a partial veil, and their spore deposits are brighter orange-rust. None of them has a short, thick, blackish velvet stalk.
How long does a colonised stump keep producing fruit bodies?
Often for several consecutive years. The mycelium is decomposing a large, dense, slow-rotting resource, so once it has established in a stump or root plate it can fruit each season until the wood is exhausted. Noting productive stumps and revisiting them in humid spells from midsummer to autumn is far more effective than searching at random.
