A tufted orange-capped mushroom with a slimy cap and a distinctive dark, velvety stem base, fruiting on hardwood stumps in the coldest months. The contrast between the bright cap and near-black stem is the giveaway.

Overview

Flammulina velutipes is a wood-inhabiting agaric in the family Physalacriaceae, the same broad group as Honey Fungus and the Porcelain Fungus. It is one of very few larger gilled mushrooms that fruits reliably in midwinter, often pushing out of a frozen stump during a thaw and resuming growth after being frozen solid.

The common names all point to the same feature: a stipe that is pale near the gills but becomes progressively darker downwards, ending in a dense, minutely velvety, dark brown to blackish base that looks and feels like suede. Combined with a shiny, sticky, tawny-orange cap and pure white spores, this makes for a very distinctive winter mushroom.

The species has been split by modern study into several closely related taxa across the northern hemisphere, differing mainly in host tree and microscopic details. In the field, the whole group is recognised the same way, and the winter fruiting season alone separates it from most other orange tufted agarics.

How to identify it

Cap

2-8 cm across, convex then flat, sometimes with a slightly wavy or upturned margin. The surface is smooth, distinctly sticky to slimy when moist and shiny when it dries, coloured tawny orange to honey-brown or reddish-amber, usually darker in the centre and paler toward the edge.

Gills

White to pale yellowish-cream, fairly broad and moderately spaced, adnexed to almost free from the stem. They stay pale even on old specimens, contrasting with the darkening stem, and may develop rusty spots where bruised or waterlogged.

Stipe

3-10 cm long, 3-10 mm thick, tough, cartilaginous and often curved or eccentric where clusters emerge sideways from wood. It is yellowish near the top and darkens through orange-brown to a deep velvety brown or black at the base, where a dense coat of fine hairs gives an unmistakable suede texture. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh & spore print

Cap flesh is soft, thin and yellowish; the stem flesh is tough, fibrous and much darker, making the stem hard to snap cleanly. The spore print is white - a critical check, since brown-spored winter look-alikes exist.

Where and when it grows

It fruits in tufts and dense clusters on the dead wood of broadleaved trees: stumps, standing dead trunks, fallen branches and wounds on living trees. Elm has been the classic host historically, with ash, willow, poplar, beech, oak and garden shrubs also frequent, and it is common on old orchard trees and street-tree stumps.

The season is remarkable: fruiting begins in late autumn and continues through winter into early spring, peaking during mild, wet spells between frosts. It is widespread across Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and the fungus is one of the few conspicuous agarics available to observe in December and January.

Ecological role

Velvet Shank is chiefly saprophytic, causing a white rot in the sapwood and heartwood of dead hardwood, though it also behaves as a weak parasite by colonising wounds and stressed limbs on living trees. Its enzymes break down lignin, softening the wood and preparing it for invertebrates and secondary decay fungi.

Its cold tolerance is the ecological headline. The fruitbodies contain antifreeze proteins that allow tissue to survive freezing and resume spore production when temperatures rise, letting the species occupy a season when almost no other agaric competes for the same substrate or for the attention of the few active winter insects. This staggered timing reduces competition on shared stumps with autumn species such as Sulphur Tuft.

Similar species

The Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata) is the most important morphological confusion: it also grows in tufts on wood in cool weather but has a rusty-brown spore print, rusty-brown gills at maturity, a thin ring or ring zone on the stem, and no velvety dark base. Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) is sulphur-yellow rather than orange, with greenish-yellow gills and a purple-brown spore print.

Gymnopilus junonius is far larger and more robust, with a dry scaly golden cap, a ring, and rusty-orange gills and spores. Pholiota species on wood have dry, scaly caps and brown spore prints. Within its own group, Flammulina is confirmed by the combination of a sticky orange cap, pale gills, a white print and that dark suede-textured lower stem.

What makes the stem look velvety?
A dense coat of very fine, dark brown to blackish hairs covering the lower stipe. It is best seen by rotating the stem in the light, and it is the single most reliable field character.
Can it really survive being frozen?
