How to work through Pluteus umbrosus in the field: a dark net-veined cap on rotting broadleaf wood, free gills with a distinctly dark fringed edge, and a pink spore print.
The First Look
You find this one on wood, and usually on wood that is well past its best — a mossy fallen beech trunk in soft decay, a heap of decomposing sawdust and chips, an old elm log breaking down into brown crumb. It is a solitary species more often than a clustered one, so the typical encounter is a single medium-sized mushroom standing alone on a log, or two or three scattered along its length.
The cap is what stops you. From a metre away it looks like a dark brown mushroom with an odd surface pattern, and up close that pattern resolves into a network. A pale ground colour is overlaid with dark brown fibrils that radiate outward and cross-connect into ridges and veins, densest and most raised at the centre and breaking up into separate fibrils and small pointed scales towards the margin. The effect is reticulate — a raised net rather than a flat streaking — and once you have seen it you will recognise it again from a distance.
Reading the Cap in Detail
Caps measure roughly three to ten centimetres across. Young specimens are conical to bell-shaped, then convex, and finally flat or nearly so, often with a low broad umbo remaining at the centre. The margin is thin and can crack into short radial splits in dry weather; in fresh material it is often minutely fringed with the same dark fibrils that clothe the disc.
The ground colour under the dark net is pale grey-brown to buff-brown, and it is most visible in the interstices of the network, especially near the rim where the fibrils separate. Overall tone is variable: some collections read as sepia and nearly black-centred, others as a softer mid-brown. The surface is dry, never viscid, and never smooth — if you can run a fingertip across a cap and feel nothing but a plain matt surface, question the identification.
The Gills and the Character That Settles It
Turn the cap over and check the attachment first. The gills are entirely free of the stalk, with a clear gap between the inner ends of the gills and the stalk apex; slice a cap vertically and you should see the gills stop short, leaving a narrow moat around the stalk. They are crowded, broad, and ventricose, so the gill face is deepest around the middle of its span.
Colour changes with maturity. Young gills are white to pale grey. As spores mature the whole surface flushes salmon-pink, then a deeper dull pink or pinkish-brown. This progression from white to pink is standard for the genus.
Now look at the gill edges with a hand lens, ideally against a bright background. In this species the edges are distinctly darker than the faces — brown to blackish-brown — and are finely fringed or flocculose rather than smooth, so a mature gill looks pink with a dark braided border. That dark, fringed gill edge combined with a reticulate cap is the diagnostic pairing for the species.
Stalk, Base and Flesh
The stalk is central, more or less equal in width, three to ten centimetres tall, sometimes swelling gently at the base but never bulbous or bag-like. The surface is whitish to pale grey-brown as a ground, overlaid with fine dark brown fibrils and floccules that are densest at the base and thin out upwards, producing a finely streaked or dotted appearance under a lens.
Check the base carefully by excavating rather than pulling. There is no volva, no sac, no rim of tissue at ground level, and no ring on the stalk at any point in development. The stalk base is usually anchored in soft rotten wood by white cottony mycelium; that mycelium, and any wood fibre it brings up, is worth photographing because it documents the substrate.
Split the fruit body lengthwise. Flesh is white to pale greyish, soft, and the stalk is solid or slightly stuffed. There is no appreciable colour change on cutting or bruising, no latex, and no blueing. Odour is faint.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
The print is essential here and it is easy to misread if you rush. Take a mature cap in which the gills have already begun to flush, cut the stalk off level with the gills, and place it gills down on white paper under a bowl for four to eight hours.
The deposit is pink to pinkish-brown, sometimes with a slightly salmon or buff cast. Judge it on white paper, in daylight, after it has dried and been scraped into a heap; a thin fresh deposit can look almost white and a very heavy one can look brownish. A genuine pink print, taken together with gills that are free from the stalk and a wood substrate, is what places the fungus in Pluteus rather than anywhere else.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is a wood-decay fungus and it needs its substrate to be well rotted. Look for it on fallen trunks and large branches of broadleaved trees — beech, elm, ash, poplar, sycamore and lime among them — at the stage where the wood has softened, darkened and begun to crumble. It also fruits readily from woody debris piles, old sawdust, and mulch made from hardwood chips, which is why urban parks and garden beds can produce it as reliably as ancient woodland.
The season is summer to autumn, extending later in mild years, and fruiting follows rain by a few days. Fruit bodies appear singly or in small scattered groups rather than in tufts. Ecologically the fungus is a saprotroph breaking down lignified tissue in the later stages of decay, so its presence indicates wood that has already been worked over by earlier colonisers.
Separating It From Look-alikes
Pluteus cervinus, the deer shield, is the species most often confused with it and by far the commonest member of the genus. It shares free gills, a pink print and a wood habit, but its cap is smooth to radially fibrillose rather than netted, without the raised reticulum, and — decisively — its gill edges are the same pale pink as the faces, not dark and fringed. It is also usually larger and paler, and its odour is more noticeable.
Pluteus atromarginatus genuinely does have dark, blackish gill edges, so it must be ruled out on other grounds. Its cap is dark brown but radially fibrillose and streaked rather than reticulate and scaly, its stalk fibrils are darker and more sharply contrasting, and it grows characteristically on conifer wood rather than broadleaf. Substrate plus cap texture separates the pair.
Pluteus ephebeus and its relatives have dark, fibrillose to scaly caps but lack the raised net and the dark gill edge, and are generally smaller.
Entoloma species also give a pink deposit, but their gills are attached to the stalk rather than free, and they typically arise from soil rather than from rotting wood. Checking the gill attachment on a vertical section is the fastest way to exclude the genus.
Any dark scaly-capped mushroom on wood that turns out to have a brown or white spore print is not a Pluteus at all — Pholiota species, for instance, have attached gills, a veil and brown spores.
Field Checklist
Well-rotted broadleaf wood or hardwood mulch; dry cap with a raised dark brown radiating network on a paler ground; free, crowded, ventricose gills passing from white to pink; dark brown fringed gill edges under a lens; whitish stalk finely streaked with dark fibrils; no ring, no volva; pink spore print.
