Vermilion Waxcap Identification Guide
A close-focus guide to Hygrocybe miniata, the small scarlet waxcap of old mossy grassland, and how its dry scurfy cap and thick waxy gills separate it from the other red Hygrocybe species.
Getting Your Eye In
Red waxcaps are found by scanning rather than by walking. The setting is short, unimproved, unfertilised grassland — an old churchyard, a hill pasture grazed for centuries, a dune slack, a heathy bank, a lawn that has never been fed. The ground is mossy and the sward is thin. In autumn, after rain, small points of scarlet appear among the moss, and this species is one of the smallest of them, easily hidden by a single grass blade.
The first impression is of intensity out of proportion to size. A cap only one to three centimetres across can be a saturated vermilion to orange-red, and against green moss it reads almost fluorescent. The whole fruit body is slight: a thin stalk, a small cap, and a total height of perhaps two to five centimetres. If you are looking at something large, fleshy and red, you are probably not looking at this species.
Reading the Cap
Start with shape. Young caps are hemispherical or bluntly conical, then convex, and finally flat or slightly dished in the centre. The margin can become faintly wavy in old specimens but is not strongly incurved.
Now the surface, which is the character that names the species in the field. It is dry, not viscid — this is important, because several other small red waxcaps have a greasy or slimy cap. Touch it with a dry fingertip and nothing clings. Under a hand lens the surface of a mature cap is minutely roughened, breaking into fine granules, scurf or tiny upturned scales, densest at the centre and thinning towards the margin. Very young caps may look almost smooth, so use a mature specimen to assess this.
Colour is scarlet to vermilion when fresh, fading with age and sunlight through orange to a washed-out yellow-orange, usually retreating from the margin inwards so that faded specimens keep a redder disc. The margin of a moist cap is often faintly striate, showing the lines of the gills beneath through thin flesh.
The Gills
Turn the cap over and look at texture before colour. Waxcap gills feel different from ordinary agaric gills: thick, soft, slightly translucent, and waxy to the touch, so that rubbing one between finger and thumb smears it rather than crumbling it. They are also widely spaced, with obvious gaps you could pass a pin through, and they are broad relative to the depth of the cap flesh.
Attachment is the key structural detail. In this species the gills are adnate — broadly attached to the stalk, sometimes with a very short decurrent tooth, but they do not sweep down the stalk in a long arc. Check this on a vertically sectioned cap rather than by eye from underneath, because a shrunken old specimen can mislead.
Colour runs from orange-red or scarlet near the cap margin to yellower or paler tones towards the stalk, and gill edges are often paler than the faces. Old, faded material can look almost entirely orange-yellow.
Stalk, Base and Flesh
The stalk is slender, usually two to five centimetres tall and only two to four millimetres thick, cylindrical, and often slightly flattened or grooved along one side. Its surface is dry and smooth — not viscid, not fibrillose, not scaly — and coloured like the cap, orange-red at the apex and generally fading to orange, yellow or whitish at the base. That pale base is a useful and consistent detail.
The interior becomes hollow with age. There is no ring, no ring zone and no volva. Excavate the base gently from the moss; it is usually clean, without a bulb, and bound by fine white mycelium among the moss stems.
Section the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is very thin, fragile, and concolorous with the surfaces — orange in the cap, paler in the stalk. There is no colour change on cutting or bruising, no latex, and no blackening. Odour is faint and unremarkable, without the garlic note some relatives show.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Because the caps are tiny, use several at once. Cut the stalks off flush, arrange three or four caps gills down on a strip of dark card or black paper, cover them with a small bowl or an upturned glass, and leave overnight in a cool place.
The deposit is white. On dark paper even a thin white print is easy to read; transfer the card into daylight and check that there is no yellow, pink or brown cast. A white print is expected for the whole waxcap group and, together with thick waxy widely spaced gills, is what confirms you are working in Hygrocybe rather than in a small red Marasmius, Mycena or Entoloma.
Habitat, Season and Ecology
The habitat requirement is strict and is itself part of the identification. This species belongs to old, nutrient-poor, undisturbed grassland with a strong moss component and a long history of grazing or mowing without fertiliser. It also occurs on acidic heathy ground, in dune slacks and on mossy banks, and occasionally in mossy woodland clearings. It does not appear in improved pasture, arable margins or recently seeded lawns, so a red waxcap in a fertilised field is likely to be something else or, more often, is a sign that the field was not as improved as it looked.
Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn and into early winter in mild seasons, following sustained damp weather. Fruit bodies appear scattered, in small groups, or in loose troops through the moss.
The nutritional ecology of waxcaps is not that of a simple litter-rotter. They are associated with mosses and with the below-ground environment of long-undisturbed turf, they respond badly to fertiliser and ploughing, and their persistence in a site indicates decades or centuries of continuity. In practice this means the community of species around your find is evidence: where one waxcap grows, others usually do, together with earthtongues, pinkgills and club fungi.
Separating It From Look-alikes
Hygrocybe cantharellus. The closest match and a frequent confusion. It shares a small, dry, scurfy red cap, but its gills are strongly and obviously decurrent, running well down the stalk, and its stalk is proportionally longer and more slender, giving the whole fungus a taller, chanterelle-like profile with a funnel-shaped cap. Gill attachment on a vertical section resolves the pair.
Hygrocybe coccinea. Larger, with a cap commonly three to five centimetres across, and crucially the cap surface is smooth and slightly greasy or moist rather than dry and scurfy. Its gills are thick, adnate with a decurrent tooth, and its stalk is stouter and more strongly red for most of its length.
Hygrocybe insipida. Small and red-orange, but its cap and stalk are both viscid when moist, and the stalk is often yellow over much of its length. The wet feel of the stalk is the fastest separator.
Hygrocybe helobia. Very similar in size and dry scurfy cap, but it has a distinct garlic-like odour, best detected by crushing a fruit body in a closed hand and then smelling it, and it favours damper, more acidic, rushy ground.
Hygrocybe reidii. Red-orange but with a smooth, moist cap and a honey-like odour, and generally larger.
Outside the genus, small red Mycena species have thin, non-waxy gills, fragile cartilaginous stalks and a different bell-shaped cap, and red Entoloma species deposit pink spores and have gills that flush pink at maturity.
