Violet Coral Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for the amethyst branching club of old grassland and mossy woodland, from branch tips and brittleness to the white spore print that separates it from the lilac Clavulina.

Standing in the Right Place

Violet Coral announces itself before you have consciously identified anything. You are usually walking short, unimproved turf, an old churchyard, a lawn that has never seen fertiliser, a mossy bank on a heath, or in eastern North America the mossy leaf litter of an oak or beech wood. Out of the moss comes a clump of small violet antlers, a colour that simply does not belong in a grassland palette. Amethyst is the right word for it. Nothing else at ground level in that setting is that saturated purple.

Because the fruit bodies are only a few centimetres tall, most finds are made while kneeling for something else, typically waxcaps, earth tongues or fairy clubs, which share the same unfertilised grassland habitat in Europe. If you are already scanning for those, Violet Coral will find you. It fruits in scattered troops rather than singly, so once you have located one tuft, spend a few minutes on hands and knees within a metre or two; there are usually more.

Reading the Shape of the Fruit Body

Work from the whole structure inwards. A typical clump is two to ten centimetres tall and two to seven centimetres across, made of several branches that rise from a shared, slightly fused base. Individual branches are round in cross section, roughly the thickness of a pencil lead to a match, and they fork one to four times as they rise, always upwards, never sprawling sideways.

The branch tips are the single most useful structural character. In Violet Coral they are blunt, rounded or slightly flattened, sometimes shallowly notched into two or three short points, but they are never finely and repeatedly crested. Hold the clump against the sky and look at the silhouette: a rounded, candelabra-like outline rather than a spiky, frosted one.

Branch surfaces are smooth, dry and matte, with no bloom, no wrinkles and no separate stalk. There is no distinct stem in the sense that a Ramaria has one; the branches simply converge into a short, paler, felty foot that is often buried in moss and easy to snap off if you pull rather than dig.

Colour and How It Ages

Fresh material is a uniform deep violet to amethyst, sometimes with a hint of rose or slate. That uniformity matters. The colour runs all the way from the tips into the base, fading only in the last centimetre where the fruit body meets soil, which is often whitish or lilac-tinged.

Ageing changes things in a predictable direction. Older clumps go dull, then brownish or ochre-buff from the tips downwards, so a late-season find can be violet at the base and dingy tan on top. Handling leaves brownish smudges. Dried material loses most of the purple and becomes a dull brown-grey, which is why a herbarium specimen never looks like the field photograph.

Flesh and Breakage

Snap a branch. Violet Coral is markedly brittle; it breaks cleanly and abruptly, more like a stick of chalk than like a piece of rubber. The interior is stuffed to hollow in mature branches, and the flesh is concolorous or a little paler than the surface. There is no latex, no gel layer, and no dramatic colour change on the broken face, though the exposed surface may slowly dull to brown over an hour.

This brittleness is worth practising, because the nearest look-alike is noticeably tougher and more flexible, and the difference is obvious once you have felt both.

The Spore-Bearing Surface

There are no gills, pores or teeth to read. The whole outer surface of every branch is fertile, which is the defining architecture of a club and coral fungus. That means colour changes with maturity are subtle and there is no contrasting undersurface to check. Do not waste time looking for one.

Taking a Spore Print

A print from a coral is easier than people expect. Cut a mature clump at the base, stand it upright in a lump of plasticine or wedge it in a slit of card, and set it on a half-black, half-white surface under an upturned glass overnight. Because spores fall from the entire branch surface, you get a diffuse halo rather than a neat pattern, but the colour reads clearly against black.

Violet Coral gives a white print. Under the microscope, spores are small, roughly four to seven by three to five micrometres, smooth, colourless and broadly ellipsoid to nearly round, and basidia carry four sterigmata. If you have a scope, the four-spored basidia and the absence of clamp connections are the clinching microscopic characters, because the most confusable species has two-spored basidia with long, curved sterigmata.

Substrate and Season

Violet Coral fruits from soil, never from wood. In Europe the classic setting is old, species-rich, unfertilised grassland, often mossy and closely grazed or mown, from late summer through autumn. In North America it appears more often in the humus and moss of broadleaf and mixed woodland over the same season. Either way, the fungus is a ground dweller with fine mycelium in the upper soil and moss layer, and it is a reliable indicator of ground that has not been ploughed or improved for a long time.

Separating It from the Look-Alikes

Amethyst Coral, Clavulina amethystina, is the real problem. It is a paler, greyer lilac, its branch tips are finely crested into multiple short points like tiny antlers, its flesh is tougher and more pliable rather than chalky, and its basidia carry only two spores. If the tips look frosted or fringed under a hand lens, think Clavulina.

Purple Fairy Club, Alloclavaria purpurea, grows in dense crowded troops of simple, unbranched spindles, usually in conifer duff or damp mossy ground, and its colour is a duller purple-grey or purple-brown. Any branching at all rules it out.

Grey Coral, Clavulina cinerea, can carry a lilac wash when young and has the same rounded clump shape, but it soon becomes ash grey, and its branches are more irregular and often blunt-lobed.

Ramaria species are altogether fleshier, arise from a thick, distinct basal stem, and drop ochre to yellow-brown spores rather than white; the print alone settles it.

Amethyst Deceiver, Laccaria amethystina, shares the colour and the habitat but is a conventional mushroom with a cap, thick widely spaced gills and a fibrous stem, so confusion only happens at a distance.

A Field Checklist

Saturated amethyst throughout; branched, round-sectioned, upward-forking clump from a fused base; blunt or shallowly notched tips; chalk-brittle flesh; white spore print; growing from soil and moss in old grassland or broadleaf woodland in late summer and autumn.
