Violet-gray Bolete Identification Guide

A practical routine for the deep purple bolete of eastern oak woods, working from cap colour and the whitening-to-pink pore surface down to the unreticulated violet stem and reddish-brown spore print.

First Impression and Setting

Violet-gray Bolete is a summer and early autumn mushroom of eastern North American hardwood forest, and the moment that fixes it in the memory is the colour of a young button pushing through oak litter: a solid, dusty violet, almost the purple of a ripe damson, on a mushroom the size and heft of a bun. Boletes in that colour class are uncommon enough that the find stops you.

The setting is broadleaf woodland with oak, and often beech, on well-drained soil, typically in warm, humid weather after summer thunderstorms. Fruit bodies come up singly or in small scattered groups along path edges, on slopes and among moss at the base of trees. As with all boletes here, the fungus is in partnership with tree roots, so you will not find it on wood, on lawns away from trees, or in conifer plantations.

One warning about first impressions: the violet is a young colour. Mature caps fade, sometimes dramatically, to purple-brown, greyish-brown, or a dull tan with only a purple flush near the margin. If the cap looks brown, always look for a younger neighbour before you write the find off.

Reading the Cap

Caps run roughly five to fifteen centimetres across. They begin strongly convex, almost hemispherical, with the margin rolled under, and flatten out with age.

The surface is dry and dull, never slimy or greasy. Under a lens it is finely velvety or matte when young, and it becomes smooth, then in dry weather often cracked or shallowly pitted in the centre. Press a fingertip firmly onto the cap: there should be no colour change beyond a faint darkening of the pressed area. A cap that bruises blue instantly rules the species out.

Run your thumb around the margin. On young specimens it frequently overhangs the tube layer by a millimetre or two, giving a slight lip, but there is no veil, no ring and no hanging fragments of tissue.

The Pore Surface

Turn the mushroom over; this is where the identification is really made. The spore-bearing surface is a layer of vertical tubes, opening as fine round pores, and its colour sequence is diagnostic. In young buttons it is clean white, sometimes with a greyish cast. As the mushroom matures it shifts to pale pinkish, then a more definite flesh-pink or pinkish-brown, and this pink is the family signature of Tylopilus.

Pores are small and crowded, about one to three per millimetre, and the tube layer is thick, often one to two centimetres deep in a mature cap. The tubes are usually depressed around the stem apex, forming a shallow moat.

Press the pore surface with a fingernail. There is either no reaction at all, or a slow, faint brownish stain after a minute or two. There is no blue, no green and no rapid darkening.

The Stipe and Base

The stem is stout, five to twelve centimetres tall and one to three centimetres thick, more or less equal or thickening downwards into a club shape.

Colour is the key. The stem is coloured much like the cap: violet to purple-grey over most of its length, often paler toward the top, and typically whitish at the very base where it meets the litter. The surface is dry and essentially smooth, sometimes finely wrinkled or with faint netting confined to the extreme apex. That near-absence of a raised network is important, because the commonest confusion species carries a bold, coarse, dark net over much of its stem.

Dig rather than pull, and look at the base: it should sit in a small mat of white mycelial threads binding leaf litter. There is no volva, no sac and no bulb with a rim.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the fruit body from cap centre to stem base in one clean cut. The flesh is thick, firm and white throughout, sometimes with a violet tinge immediately under the cap skin. Watch the cut face for a full minute. It stays white or develops at most a very faint pinkish or greyish tint. Any strong or immediate blueing means you are working on a different fungus entirely.

The smell is faint and generally unremarkable, and is not a useful character here.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stem off flush with the tubes, lay the cap pore-side down on white paper with a corner over dark card, cover it with a bowl and leave it several hours or overnight. Boletes are generous printers; a mature cap gives a heavy deposit.

The print is pinkish-brown to reddish-brown, sometimes described as flesh-brown. This is the decisive character that keeps the find inside Tylopilus and away from the olive-brown prints of Boletus and its relatives, and away from the white print of the purple-capped boletes that carry a netted white stem. Under a microscope, spores are smooth, colourless to pale, and narrowly spindle-shaped, roughly nine to thirteen by three to four and a half micrometres.

Substrate and Season

The fungus fruits from soil in hardwood forest, almost always with oak present, from midsummer to early autumn in eastern North America, peaking in warm humid spells. It is a mycorrhizal partner, so the trees around the find are part of the identification: an oak-beech wood supports it, a pure conifer stand effectively rules it out.

Separating It from the Look-Alikes

Tylopilus felleus is the species most often mistaken for it. Its cap is tan, buff or warm brown rather than violet, and its stem carries a coarse, raised, dark brown net over the upper half that you can feel with a thumbnail. Both have pink pores and a pinkish-brown print, so the stem net and cap colour do the work.

Tylopilus rubrobrunneus is larger, with a purple-brown to chocolate cap that lacks the clean violet of a young Violet-gray Bolete, whitish pores that brown with age, and a paler, more brownish stem.

Tylopilus violatinctus is a genuinely close relative and is separated on tone: a paler, more lilac or pale purple-grey cap, often with pinker pores at an earlier stage. Fresh, well-grown material shows the difference; faded specimens may not be separable in the field.

Boletus violaceofuscus, and similar purple-capped boletes with a conspicuous white raised network on the stem, keep white or yellowish pores and give a very different olive-brown print.

Purple-capped Amanita species can look superficially similar from above, but a glance underneath finds gills instead of pores.

A Field Checklist

Dry violet cap fading purple-brown; white pores turning pink; thick tube layer depressed at the stem; violet stem without a coarse net; white unchanging flesh; pinkish-brown to reddish-brown spore print; soil under oak in summer. Six of seven is a confident field call.
