Weeping Widow Identification Guide

How to work through Lacrymaria lacrymabunda in the field: the woolly tan cap with its toothed veil fringe, the mottled black gills that bead with droplets, and the very dark spore print that separates it from its many brown-capped neighbours.

Where You Meet It

This is a fungus of disturbed, trodden, human-shaped ground. Think of the edge of a gravel path through a park, the grassy strip beside a car park, a lawn where a stump was ground out years ago, a bark-mulched border, a roadside verge, the compacted soil under a hedge. It fruits from late spring through to late autumn, most abundantly after warm rain, in scattered troops or loose clusters of a few to a few dozen, sometimes arranged in a rough arc.

The first impression is of a tawny, slightly scruffy mushroom that looks as though it has been dusted with fine wool. In one patch you will usually see the whole age range at once: tight tan buttons with a shaggy fringe hanging from the rim, spreading mid-age caps, and old flattened caps whose gills have gone almost black. That spread of ages helps, because the key characters show at different stages.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 2 to 10 cm across, starting hemispherical to bell-shaped and opening to broadly convex or nearly flat, often with a low, blunt central hump. Colour is warm ochre-tan, clay-brown, honey-brown or yellowish-brown, usually a little darker at the centre and paler toward the rim, and it fades noticeably as the cap dries.

Now look closely at the surface texture, because this is where the species declares itself. It is neither smooth nor slimy. It is covered in fine, dense, appressed woolly fibrils that give a matted, felted, faintly streaky look, like brushed suede. Under a hand lens the fibrils lie in radiating strands. Older caps in dry weather can wear almost smooth at the centre while keeping that fibrillose texture toward the margin.

The margin is the second cap character. Young and mid-age specimens carry a fringe of white to pale cream veil remnants hanging down like little teeth or tatters. The fringe wears away with age and rain, but on a fresh troop at least some caps will show it clearly.

The Gills and the Weeping

Turn a cap over. The gills are crowded and narrowly attached to the stipe, sometimes with a small notch, and they change colour dramatically with age: pale greyish-brown or clay when young, then dark chocolate, then a blotchy purple-black to soot-black.

Two features matter more than the colour itself. First, the gill faces mature unevenly, so a mature cap shows a distinctly mottled or marbled pattern of paler and darker patches rather than one flat tone. Second, the gill edges stay pale and finely fringed, standing out as a white line against the black faces. In humid conditions those edges exude small clear droplets, and this weeping gives the fungus its name. When the droplets dry, the trapped dark spores leave the edge freckled with black spots. A black-gilled mushroom with white, beaded or black-speckled gill edges is very close to conclusive.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is 4 to 12 cm tall and 4 to 12 mm thick, roughly equal or slightly broader below, whitish to pale tan at the apex and browner toward the base, and it is fibrillose and slightly scurfy over most of its length. It is stuffed to hollow and snaps with a fibrous rather than a chalky break.

Look for the ring zone. There is no persistent membranous ring, but the veil leaves a distinct fibrillose band, usually in the upper third, and falling spores dye that band dark brown to black. On a mature specimen it reads as a smudged dark bracelet. The base is simply rooted in soil, litter or buried wood; there is no bulb, no sac, no volva and no strongly rooting tap.

Slice a cap and stipe lengthwise. The flesh is thin, pale brownish to dingy cream, and it does not change colour appreciably on cutting or bruising, though the cut surface may darken slightly as it dries. The smell is faint and mushroomy, with nothing distinctive to work from.

Taking and Reading the Spore Print

Choose a fully expanded cap whose gills have gone dark but whose edge has not yet begun to collapse. Cut the stipe flush, set the cap gills-down on white paper (a black or half-and-half sheet also works), cover it with a cup and leave it two to four hours; this species drops heavily and quickly.

The deposit is very dark: blackish-brown, sooty brown or nearly black, sometimes with the faintest purple cast where it lies thick. That single result cuts the field of candidates enormously. With a microscope, the spores are lemon-shaped to almond-shaped with a small germ pore, and their surface is roughened and warty rather than smooth, which is unusual among dark-spored gilled fungi and confirms the genus.

Substrate and Season

The species is saprotrophic, breaking down buried woody debris, old root systems, mulch and rich organic matter in soil. That is why it favours ground that has been dug, mulched, mown or trampled: grassy verges, lawns, path edges, parkland, gardens, waste ground and the litter of open woodland edges. It appears from May to November across Europe and North America and is one of the more reliable late-season lawn fungi after heavy rain.

Separating It from Look-alikes

Brittlestems (Psathyrella species) are the nearest relatives and share the dark print and mottled gills. They differ in build: their caps are thin, smooth to finely silky and often hygrophanous rather than densely woolly-fibrillose, and their stipes are white, brittle and glassy, snapping cleanly like a piece of chalk. They also lack the fringed, beading gill edges.

Mottlegills (Panaeolus species) have the same mottled black gills but slimmer, smoother, more evenly grey to tan caps with no woolly covering and no toothy veil fringe on the rim, and their stipes are typically slender, smooth and often finely powdered at the apex.

Field mushrooms and relatives (Agaricus species) have gills that are truly free from the stipe, pass through a clean pink stage before turning chocolate brown, never look mottled, and sit beneath a proper membranous ring. Their print is chocolate brown, not sooty black.

Inkcaps (Coprinellus and Coprinopsis) can grow in identical places, but their gills dissolve into black ink as they mature, their caps are usually more ovoid, pleated or mica-flecked, and the whole fruit body collapses rather than drying out intact.

Sheathed Woodtuft, Hypholoma and similar tuft-formers grow on obvious wood, have smooth, shiny, two-toned caps and rusty-brown to purple-brown prints rather than blackish-brown.

Lacrymaria pyrotricha, a much rarer relative, is far brighter, clothed in orange to rusty-tawny fibrils on both cap and stipe; the ordinary Weeping Widow never reaches that intensity of colour.
