Western Black Elfin Saddle Identification Guide

A field routine for Helvella vespertina, the black saddle-capped ascomycete of western conifer forests, from the lobed cap and chambered ribbed stalk to the details that split it from its oak-loving spring cousin.

First Impressions

You are standing in a Pacific coast conifer forest in autumn or early winter: Douglas-fir, coast pine, or a mixed stand with a duff layer of needles and a scatter of moss. Something dark catches the eye at the edge of a trail or along a bank, and at first it does not read as a mushroom at all. It looks like a charred scrap of leather propped on a knuckle of grey bone.

That is the Western Black Elfin Saddle. It is 5 to 15 cm tall, occasionally more, and it stands above the litter rather than hiding in it, yet the black cap absorbs light so effectively that a whole group can be invisible until you are almost on top of them. Fruit bodies appear singly, scattered, or in loose troops, and they are firm, dry and brittle rather than fleshy.

Reading the Cap

The cap is the part people find hardest to describe, because it has no fixed shape. It is 2 to 10 cm across and typically forms two or three irregular lobes that fold down and outward, giving the classic saddle profile. Some caps are more like a crumpled cone; others are contorted, folded over themselves, or partly fused to the top of the stalk. Look at several specimens and you will see the whole range in one collection.

Colour is the anchor: the upper, fertile surface is grey-black to charcoal or true black, sometimes with a slightly brownish or dark grey cast in older or weathered material. It is smooth to gently undulating, never pitted like a morel and never brain-like with tight convolutions. The margin is free at the lobe tips but is often fused to the stalk in one or two places, and the edges roll and wave.

Turn the cap over and check the sterile underside. It is distinctly paler, a light to mid grey, and finely fuzzy or pubescent under a hand lens, which contrasts nicely with the smooth black top. That two-tone effect is a useful confirmation when colours are hard to judge in poor light.

Reading the Stalk

The stalk is the best character in the whole fungus, and it is worth lifting one specimen cleanly out of the duff to see it. It is stout, 4 to 12 cm tall and 1 to 3 cm thick, and it is deeply lacunose: sculpted with long, sharp-edged ribs that run and fork lengthwise, enclosing deep grooves, pockets and internal chambers. Cut it across and the section looks like a honeycomb of irregular hollows separated by thin walls, not a simple hollow tube.

Colour on the stalk runs from whitish-grey through ash grey to nearly black, usually darkest at the top where it meets the cap and where the ribs are most pronounced, and often paler toward the base. In this western species the stalk tends to be grey or grey-black rather than pure white, which becomes important when you separate it from its relatives.

The base simply enters the duff. There is no bulb, no volva, no sheath and no rooting cord, although soil and needles often lodge in the deep grooves and need brushing out before you can read the sculpturing.

Flesh and Colour Change

Break the cap or the stalk. The flesh is thin, brittle and chalky-textured, whitish to pale grey, and it snaps with a clean crack rather than tearing. There is no latex, no gelatinous layer and no significant colour change on exposure: cut surfaces stay pale, perhaps drying a shade greyer. The smell is faint and earthy. This absence of reaction matters, because the fungi most often mistaken for it behave the same way, so the identification has to rest on structure instead.

Spore Print

This is an ascomycete, so the spore-bearing surface is the smooth outer face of the cap, not gills, pores or teeth. Printing still works, but the technique differs. Cut the cap free, rest it fertile-side-down on white paper or a glass slide, and cover it. A mature specimen will drop a white to pale cream deposit within a few hours, and in a warm room you may even see a faint puff of spores released as a visible cloud when the cap is jostled.

Under the microscope the picture is clean and confirmatory: broadly ellipsoid, smooth, colourless spores, typically with a single large central oil droplet, borne eight to an ascus. The sterile paraphyses have swollen, pigmented tips, which is what makes the cap surface read as black to the eye.

Habitat, Partners and Season

The species is mycorrhizal, forming partnerships with conifer roots, and its distribution follows western North American conifer forest, from coastal Douglas-fir and pine stands into montane forest. Expect it on the ground in duff, along road cuts, on trail banks, on mossy slopes and under planted conifers in parks and cemeteries within its range.

Season is the second half of the year: it fruits mainly in autumn and early winter as the rains arrive, and it can persist into midwinter along the coast. The combination of conifer association, autumn to winter fruiting and blackish colouring is the core habitat signature.

Separating It from Look-alikes

Helvella dryophila, the western oak-loving elfin saddle, is the closest problem. It fruits in winter and spring under oaks rather than in autumn under conifers, its cap tends to be a warmer dark brown to blackish-brown, and its stalk is characteristically whiter and more slender against the darker cap. Substrate and season carry most of the weight here, with the stalk contrast as a good visual cue.

Helvella crispa shares the lacunose ribbed stalk and lobed saddle cap but is whitish to pale cream or buff throughout, with a wavy, often crisped cap margin. Once colour registers there is no confusion.

Helvella elastica and its relatives have a saddle cap of similar shape but a smooth, slender, round stalk with no ribs, grooves or chambers, and their caps are usually tan to grey-brown.

Helvella maculata has a mottled, blotchy grey-brown cap rather than an even charcoal one, and a stalk that is ribbed but typically paler and less deeply chambered.

False morels (Gyromitra species) can be dark, but their caps are irregularly convoluted and brain-like or cushion-shaped, folding back on themselves in tight wrinkles, and their stalks are stouter and far less sharply ribbed.

True morels (Morchella species) have a pitted, honeycombed cap attached to the stalk around its lower edge and are hollow from cap tip to stalk base in one continuous chamber. Nothing about a morel resembles a saddle-shaped cap perched on a chambered stalk.

Black trumpets (Craterellus cornucopioides) are vase-shaped and hollow all the way down, thin and pliable like leather, with a smooth to faintly wrinkled outer surface and no distinct ribbed stalk at all.
