Western Giant Puffball Identification Guide
Field identification of Calvatia booniana, the huge polygon-plated puffball of western sagebrush country, covering the scaly skin, the maturing interior, the cord-like base and the puffballs it is most often confused with.
Spotting It
You are in dry, open country in the American West: sagebrush flats, bunchgrass rangeland, high desert benches, the margins of irrigated fields, sometimes an open pine slope. Days after a good soaking rain, a pale object appears in the middle distance that at first reads as a rock, a discarded ball, or an animal skull sitting in the grass.
Scale is the headline. This is one of the largest fungi in western North America, routinely 20 to 40 cm across and capable of exceeding 60 cm and several kilograms. Specimens frequently occur singly, but you will also find loose groups scattered across a slope, and arcs where a mycelium has expanded outward through the soil over years.
The shape is depressed-globose: a broad, slightly flattened ball with a rounded top and a somewhat pinched underside where it meets the ground. There is no cap, no stalk and no gills, which is exactly the point; puffballs enclose their spores inside instead of hanging them on an exposed surface.
Reading the Skin
Get close and study the outer wall, the peridium, because this is what separates this species from every other giant puffball.
The surface is white to pale cream when young, dulling to buff, tan or brownish as the fungus ages. It is not smooth. It is broken into distinct flattened warts and polygonal scales, like a coarsely tiled or cracked mud surface, and the plates are largest and most pronounced over the top of the ball and become finer and flatter down the sides. Run your fingers over it and you can feel the raised plate edges. In older specimens these plates begin to lift, curl and flake away, and the underlying surface exposed beneath them is smoother and browner.
Late in the season the outer wall breaks down altogether, tearing open in irregular sheets so that wind and rain can strip the spore mass out. Ruptured, hollowed shells persist for months in dry western climates and are still recognisable from the plate pattern on the remaining rind and from the sheer size of the fragments.
Cutting It Open
The interior tells you the age of the fungus, and that in turn tells you which characters you can trust.
Cut the whole ball vertically with a long knife. A young specimen is uniformly white inside, firm, moist and homogeneous, with the texture of dense marshmallow or fresh bread dough. Critically, there is no internal structure: no outline of a cap and stalk, no chambers, no cavity, no dark rind zone. Uniform whiteness from one side to the other is the key observation.
As the fungus matures, the interior, called the gleba, turns yellowish, then olive-yellow, then olive-brown, and its texture changes from firm to cottony to a fine dusty powder threaded with fibres. The colour change starts in the centre and works outward, so a mid-age specimen shows a white outer shell with a yellowing core.
At the very bottom sits a small sterile base, much less developed than in some relatives, and the whole fungus is attached to the soil by a single tough, cord-like rhizomorph. Dig that up: a thick white root-like cord anchoring an enormous ball is a good supporting character.
Colour Change and Flesh Reaction
The white interior of a fresh specimen may discolour slowly to yellowish where cut and exposed to air, but there is no rapid or dramatic reaction, no bluing, no reddening and no latex. If a cut interior shows a purple, black, grey or marbled pattern from the outset, you are not looking at this species.
Spores Instead of a Spore Print
You cannot take a conventional print, because there is no gill or pore surface to lay on paper. The mature fungus is its own spore deposit. To read the spores, wait until the interior has gone powdery, tap the ball over a sheet of white paper, and examine the colour of the dust: it is olive-brown to yellow-brown, never white, pink, black or rust-red.
Under a microscope the spores are globose, minutely spiny to warty, and pale olive-brown, mixed with a mass of thick-walled sterile threads called capillitium that give the mature interior its cottony feel. In dry weather a mature specimen releases visible puffs of this dust when kicked by livestock or struck by heavy raindrops, which is how the fungus disperses across open country.
Substrate, Ecology and Season
The Western Giant Puffball is a saprotroph, breaking down organic matter in dry, often alkaline soils. Its habitats are arid and semi-arid: sagebrush steppe, rangeland, dry grassland, desert scrub, roadside verges in dry country, and the drier edges of irrigated ground. It is not a forest species in the way its eastern relatives are, though it can appear on open ground near pinyon, juniper or ponderosa pine.
Fruiting is rain-driven rather than strictly seasonal. Flushes follow substantial rainfall from late spring through autumn, and in the intermountain West the biggest flushes often come after early summer or late summer storms. Because the fruit bodies are so large and so tough-skinned, individual specimens persist for weeks, and the ruptured shells last far longer.
Separating It from Look-alikes
Calvatia gigantea, the giant puffball proper, reaches similar or greater size but has a smooth to slightly felted, kid-leather surface without the coarse polygonal plates, and it grows in moist meadows, pastures, hedgerows and rich open woodland rather than arid steppe, mainly in eastern North America and Europe.
Calbovista subsculpta is the closest structural match. It is smaller, usually 8 to 15 cm, its warts are raised, pyramidal and typically bear a small dark point or tuft at the tip, and it lives in mountain conifer forest and along montane roadsides rather than sagebrush flats. It also has a more developed cottony sterile base.
Calvatia craniiformis is skull-shaped, wrinkled toward the base, with a large, well-defined sterile base occupying a third or more of the fruit body, and a thin peridium that peels away in fine flakes.
Calvatia cyathiformis matures with a distinctly purple to purple-brown gleba and leaves a persistent cup-shaped sterile base behind after the top has weathered away.
Lycoperdon species are far smaller, usually a few centimetres, are often pear-shaped with a narrowed stalk-like base, and mature by opening a single neat pore at the apex rather than tearing open.
Scleroderma species are firm and heavy for their size, with a thick, tough rind that is often yellowish and coarsely scaly, and their interior turns purple-black and marbled with white veins very early, unlike the white-then-olive progression here.
Unopened Amanita eggs are the classic trap in any puffball group. They are far smaller, but the test is the same: cut vertically and look for the outline of a developing cap, gills and stalk inside the veil. A puffball is uniform all the way through.
