A clustered orange mushroom flushed with distinctive olive-green tones, with long-decurrent orange gills that glow faintly green in darkness, fruiting from oak stumps and roots on the Pacific coast.
Overview
The Western Jack-O'-Lantern (Omphalotus olivascens) is the Pacific-coast member of a small genus of clustered, decurrent-gilled, luminescent wood-rotters. It is separated from its eastern counterpart chiefly by colour: where Omphalotus illudens is a clean pumpkin orange, this species carries strong olive-green to olive-brown tones over its orange ground, particularly on the cap centre and along the gill edges, and the epithet olivascens records exactly that.
The genus Omphalotus is defined by fruitbodies growing in dense fused clusters on wood, gills running well down an eccentric or off-centre stipe, pale spore prints, and bioluminescence in fresh gill tissue. In this species the glow is real but faint, requiring twenty minutes or more of dark adaptation and a very dark setting, and it is strongest in young, actively sporulating specimens.
It is a conspicuous late-season fungus in California and the coastal ranges, appearing after the first substantial autumn rains as large orange clumps at the base of oaks or apparently from bare soil above buried roots. Weathered clusters can persist for weeks, fading to dull tan-orange as the olive tones wash out.
How to identify it
Cap
Caps are 5–20 cm across, convex at first, soon flat and then shallowly to deeply funnel-shaped or with a depressed centre, and often irregular where crowding in the cluster has deformed them. The surface is dry, smooth to finely fibrillose, and coloured bright to dull orange with pronounced olive-green, olive-brown or greenish-grey overtones, strongest at the centre; older caps fade toward tan-orange.
Gills
Gills are orange to orange-yellow, often with distinctly olive-tinted edges, narrow, crowded and long-decurrent, running well down the stipe. They are the luminescent tissue, emitting a faint greenish glow when fresh and viewed in full darkness. Gill edges are even and unbroken, and the blades are true, sharp-edged and non-forking, unlike the blunt forking folds of chanterelles.
Stipe
The stipe is 4–15 cm long, tapering downward and often rooting, eccentric to nearly central depending on position in the cluster, and coloured like the cap in orange with olive shading. Stipes are fused at the base into a large common mass. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is orange to pale orange, firm and fibrous, and does not change colour appreciably when cut, though a section shows the orange running throughout rather than being confined to the surface. The spore print is cream to pale yellow — never truly white and never pink or brown. Spores are smooth and subglobose.
Where and when it grows
Omphalotus olivascens fruits in dense clusters on the stumps, buried roots and lower trunks of hardwoods, with coast live oak and other Quercus species the classic hosts. Eucalyptus, madrone and other broadleaves are also used. Because the fungus commonly grows from roots below ground, clusters frequently appear to emerge from bare soil or lawn several feet from the nearest trunk, though the attachment is always to woody tissue.
The season is autumn through winter, beginning with the first sustained rains and continuing while conditions stay damp — in coastal California typically October through February. The species is a Pacific-coast endemic, distributed through California and adjoining regions into Baja California and northward along the coastal ranges, and it is a familiar sight in oak woodland, urban parks and campus plantings.
Ecological role
This is a wood-decay fungus causing a white rot in hardwood, functioning as a saprotroph on dead stumps and roots and as a weak parasite that colonises the butt and root system of living oaks through wounds. Its mycelium can occupy a large root plate, which is why clusters may appear in a rough ring or a scattered arc around a long-vanished stump, and why the same site produces fruitbodies year after year.
Bioluminescence in the gills results from an oxidative enzymatic reaction in living tissue that emits continuous green light. In this species the emission is weak compared with the Ghost Fungus, but it is genuine and detectable on a moonless night away from artificial light. The prevailing hypothesis is that the glow recruits nocturnal insects to visit the gill surface and disperse spores, extending dispersal beyond simple wind fall in the sheltered understorey where these clusters typically fruit.
Similar species
Cantharellus species, especially the golden chanterelles of the same range, are the classic confusion, but a chanterelle has blunt, forking, vein-like ridges that run down the stipe rather than true knife-edged gills, grows singly or scattered from soil in mycorrhizal association rather than in fused clusters on wood, and has paler, whitish interior flesh instead of orange throughout.
Omphalotus illudens, the eastern jack-o'-lantern, is nearly identical in structure but lacks the olive-green tints and occurs east of the Rockies. Gymnopilus species such as G. junonius form large orange clusters on wood too, but they have a ring on the stipe and a rusty-orange spore print rather than cream. Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, the false chanterelle, is much smaller, thinner-fleshed, with soft repeatedly forking orange gills and a thin stipe, growing on litter and conifer debris. Checking for true sharp-edged decurrent gills, orange flesh throughout, a fused cluster on wood, and a cream spore print separates Omphalotus from all of these.
