A ghostly pale scaber stalk of wet birch bogs, almost white overall with soft watery flesh and a faint greenish tinge to the cap and stem base.
Overview
The White Birch Bolete is the palest of the scaber stalks, a fungus so lightly pigmented that in dim light among sphagnum it can look almost luminous. Where its close relative the brown birch bolete is mouse-grey and earthy, Leccinum holopus is whitish, cream, or faintly greenish, and its whole texture is softer and more water-laden.
It is a specialist of a very particular habitat: wet birch woodland, the boggy scrub known as birch carr, and the fringes of raised bogs and mires where downy birch grows out of deep sphagnum. This restriction to waterlogged, acid ground is as diagnostic as any morphological character and is the first thing to note when a pale scaber stalk is encountered.
Within Leccinum it sits close to the L. scabrum group, sharing the small round pores, long slender stem, and file-rough scabers of the genus. Several pale forms have been described within it, differing subtly in the amount of green or blue tinting they show in the stem base.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 4 to 10 cm across, convex then flattening, and is characteristically thin-fleshed and rather soft. Colour is whitish, ivory, or pale buff, often washed with a delicate greenish or greyish tint, and sometimes acquiring faint brownish patches as it ages. The surface is smooth, slightly greasy or slimy when wet, and often looks permanently damp.
Pores
Tubes are whitish, becoming pale cream or faintly greenish-grey with age. Pores are small, round, and crowded, depressed around the stem apex, and stain only weakly ochre or brownish when handled.
Stipe
The stem is long and slender, 6 to 15 cm tall, whitish, and covered with fine scabers that are pale at first and darken only to buff or pale greyish-brown rather than the blackish of many relatives. The base frequently shows a distinct blue-green or verdigris tint on the outside, and the stem is often curved from pushing through moss.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is white and notably soft and watery. On cutting it may remain unchanged, turn faintly pinkish in the cap, or show a clear blue-green stain in the stem base. The spore print is pale snuff-brown to ochre-brown.
Where and when it grows
Leccinum holopus is confined to wet ground under birch, and downy birch in particular. Typical sites are sphagnum bogs and mire margins, boggy birch carr, wet heathland hollows, poorly drained birch scrub, and the damp edges of upland pools and flushes. It is rarely if ever found on dry birch banks where L. scabrum thrives.
It is widespread across northern Europe and the boreal zone of Asia and North America, following the distribution of birch on acid peaty soils. Fruiting is concentrated in late summer and autumn, often in the wettest parts of a site, with fruit bodies pushing up directly through cushions of sphagnum moss.
Ecological role
This bolete is ectomycorrhizal with birch, forming the usual fungal mantle and internal hyphal network on the tree's fine roots. Its habitat is a demanding one: peat bogs are acid, cold, low in available nitrogen, and often nearly anaerobic, and the mycorrhizal partnership is what allows birch to extract usable nutrients from such ground at all.
The fungus is therefore a component of a distinctive and comparatively fragile wetland community, and its presence signals intact wet birch habitat. Its fruit bodies are short-lived and decay quickly in the constantly humid conditions of a bog, releasing spores over a matter of days. Drainage of peatland removes both the sphagnum structure and the wet conditions the species requires, so it tends to disappear where mires are dried out.
Similar species
Leccinum scabrum is the closest relative, but its cap is a solid grey-brown to tan rather than whitish, its scabers darken to blackish, and it favours drier birch ground. Leccinum variicolor also grows in damp birch habitat and shows blue-green staining in the stem base, but its cap is a distinctly mottled grey-brown with paler and darker patches rather than pale and uniform.
Leccinum niveum and other pale segregates within the holopus group differ only in subtle degrees of green tinting and are hard to separate in the field. Pale forms of Leccinum roseofractum and washed-out old L. scabrum can also mimic it, but their firmer flesh, browner tubes, and drier habitat separate them; combined with the sphagnum setting, the soft watery texture and greenish stem base make L. holopus recognisable.
