Overview

White Coral is one of the most graceful of the small terrestrial corals, forming a soft white bushy tuft 3 to 12 cm tall whose branches divide again and again into slender fingers. Its whiteness is the first thing that registers in dim woodland — it appears almost luminous against dark leaf litter or green moss.

Ramariopsis is a genus in the Clavariaceae, sharing ancestry with Clavaria and Clavulinopsis rather than with the larger Ramaria corals of the Gomphaceae, despite the similar name and form. The genus is characterised by small, brittle, richly branched fruiting bodies and, microscopically, by finely spiny or warted spores — a detail that separates it from the smooth-spored Clavulinopsis.

Ramariopsis kunzei is the type species and the most frequently encountered member of the genus in temperate woodland. It is widespread and adaptable, appearing in both wooded and semi-open habitats, which sets it apart from the strictly grassland members of its family.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

A tuft 3 to 12 cm tall and up to 10 cm wide, arising from a short common stem that branches close to the ground. Branching is repeated three to six times, with the arms becoming progressively slimmer toward the top. Branch tips are blunt, rounded or shortly forked into two or three small points, never cup-shaped and never sharply toothed.

Branches and colour

Branches are smooth, dry, 1 to 4 mm thick, and pure white to chalk-white when fresh, sometimes acquiring cream, pale pinkish or faintly buff tones with age, particularly at the tips or where handled. The whole structure is soft and slightly translucent when very fresh, becoming more opaque and chalky as it dries.

Base

The base is a short, sometimes barely distinguishable common stem, white and often finely downy, arising directly from soil, humus or rotted litter. There is no ring, volva or bulb.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white throughout, brittle, and snaps rather than tears. The spore print is white. Under a microscope the spores are subglobose to broadly elliptical and covered in fine spines or warts, which is the defining character of Ramariopsis and immediately separates it from the smooth-spored genera it resembles in the field.

Where and when it grows

White Coral grows from soil, humus and well-rotted litter in broadleaved and mixed woodland, and also appears on mossy banks, in grassy woodland clearings, along shaded paths and occasionally in lawns bordering trees. It tolerates a range of soil types and is not tied to a single tree species, although it is most often noted under oak, beech, maple and mixed hardwoods.

Fruiting runs from summer through autumn, generally later in cooler climates, with flushes following steady rain. It is widespread in temperate North America, where it is common in eastern hardwood forests, and occurs across Europe and temperate Asia. Because small white corals are easy to overlook and hard to separate without a microscope, distribution maps probably understate its true frequency.

Ecological role

Ramariopsis kunzei is treated as a saprotroph, breaking down leaf litter, humus and fine woody debris in the upper soil layer. Unlike the large Ramaria corals, which form mycorrhizal partnerships with trees, members of the Clavariaceae are not generally root symbionts of woody plants — although the grassland members of the family have raised questions about biotrophic links to herbaceous roots.

The mycelium ramifies invisibly through humus, and fruiting bodies appear where the network reaches sufficient density and moisture. Repeated branching is an efficient way to expand fertile surface area from a small amount of tissue, which suits a fungus with limited nutrient reserves; the entire outer surface of every branch produces spores. In woodland ecosystems the species plays a modest role in litter turnover and in returning nutrients from decaying plant material to the soil.

Similar species

Clavulina cristata (Crested Coral) is the commonest confusion. It is also whitish and branched but has flattened, finely toothed or crested tips instead of smooth blunt ones, is tougher and more pliant rather than brittle, and often shows grey discolouration at the base or where parasitised. Clavulina cinerea is similar in structure but ash-grey overall.

Ramariopsis crocea shares the same delicate branching but is bright orange to apricot. Artomyces pyxidatus has an equally branched white to buff form but grows directly on decaying logs and ends every branch in a distinct crown of small points around a hollow cup. Clavaria fragilis is white but forms unbranched, clustered spindles rather than a branched bush. Where branch tips are ambiguous, spore ornamentation under a microscope is decisive: Ramariopsis spores are spiny, Clavulina spores are smooth and its basidia bear only two spores.
