An extremely fragile white to cream conical mushroom of lawns that appears overnight and often collapses by midday, with rusty ochre spores.
Overview
The White Dunce Cap is a familiar lawn fungus in warm, humid weather, appearing before dawn in scattered troops and frequently wilting before the afternoon. Its milk-white to pale cream conical cap perched on a long thread-like stem gives it the pointed silhouette that inspired the common name.
Conocybe is a genus in the Bolbitiaceae, related to Bolbitius and Agrocybe, and defined by a conical to bell-shaped cap, a rusty brown spore deposit, and generally very fragile tissue. This species, long known as Conocybe lactea or C. albipes, is the pale extreme of the genus and the one most often noticed by gardeners.
Fragility is the key impression: the cap tissue is so thin that specimens frequently split, flatten, or slump before they can be examined, and the stem snaps at the slightest handling. Photographing them early in the morning is the only reliable way to record them intact.
How to identify it
Cap
About 1-3 cm across and often taller than wide when young, narrowly conical to bell-shaped, expanding only slightly. The surface is dry to slightly silky, finely wrinkled or grooved radially, and milk-white to pale cream, sometimes with a faint ochre or tan flush at the very centre.
Gills
Adnexed to nearly free, crowded and narrow, whitish at first and quickly turning pale cinnamon then rusty ochre-brown as the spores mature, giving the underside a warm tone that contrasts with the white cap.
Stipe
Very long and slender relative to the cap, 4-10 cm tall and 1-2 mm thick, white, hollow, minutely powdery or pruinose under a lens, and slightly swollen to bulbous at the base. There is no ring.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is exceptionally thin, watery white, and very fragile. The spore print is rusty ochre-brown, an important character because the mushroom looks white-spored at first glance.
Where and when it grows
It grows on lawns, playing fields, roadside verges, pasture, and other fertile, nitrogen-rich grassland, and also on rich garden soil, compost-amended beds, and mulch. Fruit bodies are usually scattered or in loose troops rather than in rings or tufts.
The season runs from late spring through autumn, with fruiting triggered by warm, humid nights, especially after rain or irrigation. Caps expand overnight and often collapse by the middle of the day. The species is widespread across temperate and warm regions worldwide, having spread readily with cultivated turf.
Ecological role
Conocybe apala is a saprotroph of grassland soil and thatch, breaking down grass litter, root debris, and organic matter in the upper soil layer. It responds strongly to nitrogen enrichment, which is why mown, fertilised lawns produce far more fruit bodies than unimproved grassland.
The life cycle is compressed into a few hours of visible fruiting: the mycelium invests in a very thin, quickly expanded fruit body, releases spores in the morning, and then abandons it. This rapid turnover means a lawn can produce a fresh crop on many consecutive mornings without any sign of them by evening.
Similar species
Other Conocybe and Pholiotina species share the conical cap and rusty spore print but are typically tan, honey-brown, or reddish-brown rather than white, and some Pholiotina have a distinct membranous ring on the stem. Bolbitius titubans, the Yellow Fieldcap, has a slimy, bright yellow, quickly flattening cap and a similar rusty-brown spore deposit.
Parasola and Coprinellus species in lawns have pleated grey caps, black spore prints, and gills that dissolve or shrivel. Small white Marasmius species such as the Fairy Ring Champignon have tough, pliant stems, widely spaced gills, and a white spore print rather than the fragile stem and rusty spores of the White Dunce Cap.
