A pale, almost white-capped king bolete of the American Southwest, growing with ponderosa pine and oak. Whitish stipe with a fine white net and unchanging white flesh.

Overview

Boletus barrowsii is the pale-capped western North American member of the king bolete group, named for the New Mexican naturalist Chuck Barrows who first drew attention to it. It shares the structural signature of Boletus in the strict sense - white pores ageing yellow-olive, a reticulate stipe and white unchanging flesh - but replaces the brown cap of its relatives with a soft whitish to pale buff surface.

In the ponderosa pine forests of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado it is often the largest and most conspicuous fungus of the summer monsoon season, and its pallid cap against red-brown pine litter is unmistakable at a distance. Populations extend west into California, where it occurs with oaks in coastal and foothill woodland.

Its pale colouring is not simply bleaching. Even young buttons emerging from litter are cream or ivory, and the felted texture of the cap surface is consistent across the species' range.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 7-25 cm across, hemispherical then broadly convex to almost flat. It is whitish, ivory, cream or pale buff, sometimes acquiring faint tan or pinkish-brown tints towards the centre in age or after sun exposure. The surface is dry and finely felted or suede-like, becoming smoother with age, and may crack shallowly in arid weather.

Pores

The pore surface is white and stuffed at first, changing gradually through cream and yellow to olive-yellow. Pores are small, round and depressed around the stipe apex; the tube layer detaches cleanly from the cap. Handling does not produce blue staining.

Stipe

The stipe is stout and often massive, 8-20 cm tall and 3-7 cm thick, bulbous or club-shaped when young and elongating with age. It is white to very pale buff, occasionally with brownish tints near the base, and carries a fine raised white network that is most obvious in the upper third and may extend further down.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thick, firm and white and does not change colour when cut or exposed to air. The spore print is olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

This species is an upland fungus of the American Southwest and the Pacific states. Its principal partner across New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado is ponderosa pine, and it also grows with Gambel oak and other southwestern oaks; in California it is found with coast live oak and related species in foothill woodland and coastal forest.

In the interior Southwest fruiting is tied to the summer monsoon, with fruit bodies appearing in July, August and September a week or two after sustained rain. In California the season shifts to autumn and early winter with the arrival of the first substantial rains. It typically grows scattered or in small groups in open pine litter, along forest roads and on grassy slopes beneath scattered trees.

Ecological role

Boletus barrowsii is ectomycorrhizal with pines and oaks, forming the characteristic fungal mantle over host root tips and a network of hyphae between the outer root cells. In the semi-arid Southwest this partnership is particularly important for water relations, since the fungal network can draw moisture from a soil volume far larger than the root system alone can occupy.

The strong dependence on monsoon rainfall makes fruiting highly episodic: the mycelium may persist for years with little visible activity and then produce a heavy flush within days of a soaking storm. Fruit bodies are rapidly colonised by insect larvae in the warm conditions, and rodents commonly gnaw the caps, contributing to spore dispersal across the forest floor.

Similar species

Boletus rex-veris is the other western king bolete, but it has a reddish-brown cap, fruits in clusters at snowmelt in high mountain conifer forest, and is often half-buried and grit-encrusted. Boletus edulis in its western forms has a distinctly brown to chestnut, slightly tacky cap.

Leucoagaricus and other pale agarics that share the same pine litter are separated instantly by having true gills rather than a pore layer. Pale Tylopilus species can approach the cap colour but develop pink-tinged pores and a pinkish-brown spore print, and pale Leccinum species have scabrous dark tufts along the stipe instead of a fine raised net.
