Laetiporus cincinnatus

Forms a broad rosette of soft salmon-orange fans on the ground at the base of oaks, distinguished from its relatives by a white to cream pore surface rather than a yellow one.
Overview
Laetiporus cincinnatus is one of several species separated out of the old, broadly defined Laetiporus sulphureus complex. All members of the genus share soft, fleshy, brightly coloured annual brackets and a brown rot of the wood they inhabit, but they differ in colour, growth habit and the trees they colonise.
This species is distinguished by two things. First, its pore surface is white to pale cream rather than the vivid sulphur-yellow of its better-known relative. Second, its growth habit: instead of shelving up a standing trunk, it emerges from the soil at the base of a tree, arising from buried roots, and arranges itself into a broad circular rosette of overlapping fans that can be half a metre or more across.
The cap colour is also softer — salmon, peach or muted orange, often paler toward the margin — giving the whole rosette a pastel look compared with the fiery orange-and-yellow shelves of the trunk-dwelling species. It is a fungus of eastern North American oak woodland and is often the largest and most conspicuous organism on the forest floor when it appears.
How to identify it
Cap
Individual caps are fan- to spoon-shaped, 5–25 cm across, thick and soft-fleshed when fresh, with a wavy, lobed and often crimped margin. Colour is salmon-pink to peach or muted orange, typically fading toward cream or whitish at the edge and paling overall with age. Numerous caps are fused at a common base to form a rosette, sometimes 30–60 cm in diameter, sitting directly on the ground.
Pores
The pore surface is white to very pale cream, occasionally taking on the faintest pink or buff tint, and it runs slightly down the point of attachment. Pores are small, round to angular, roughly 3–5 per millimetre, and the tube layer is shallow. The pale underside against salmon caps is the single most reliable field character.
Stipe
There is no true stipe, but the fused caps converge into a thick central base that connects to a root below ground, so the rosette often appears to be growing out of the soil like a huge ruffled flower.
Flesh & spore print
The context is white to pale cream, soft, moist and slightly fibrous when young, becoming dry, chalky and brittle in age. It does not stain appreciably when cut. The spore deposit is white.
Where and when it grows
This species fruits on the ground at the base of living and dead oaks, arising from buried roots and root crowns, and less often directly on stumps or the lowest part of a trunk. Oak is by far the dominant support, with white oak group species particularly favoured; other broadleaf trees are occasionally recorded.
It is a fungus of eastern and central North America, common from the Great Lakes and southern Canada south to the Gulf states and west into the oak woodlands of the central plains. Fruiting runs from early summer into autumn, often triggered by heavy rain, and the same root system may produce a rosette in the same spot for many consecutive years.
Ecological role
Laetiporus cincinnatus causes a brown rot in the roots and butt of oaks: it removes cellulose and leaves lignin, so decayed wood turns reddish-brown and breaks into cubical blocks. Because the decay is centred underground and in the root collar, an infected tree often shows no external sign until the rosette appears.
The fungus behaves as a parasite on living heartwood and continues as a saprotroph on the dead root system for years afterward. Root and butt rot of this kind is a significant structural process in mature oak stands, contributing to windthrow and eventual gap formation, which in turn drives forest regeneration. The soft brackets are quickly colonised by beetles and fly larvae, returning their nutrients rapidly to the soil.
Similar species
Laetiporus sulphureus is the closest match in colour but grows as overlapping shelves on standing trunks, logs and large branches rather than a ground-level rosette, and its pore surface is bright sulphur-yellow rather than white. That yellow underside is the decisive difference. Laetiporus conifericola and L. gilbertsonii likewise have yellow pore surfaces and differ in substrate — conifers and eucalyptus or western oaks respectively.
Grifola frondosa also forms large clusters at the base of oaks but has grey-brown, tongue-shaped caps on a branched pale stalk system, with a white pore surface underneath and thin, flexible flesh. Meripilus sumstinei is similarly basal and rosette-forming but is grey-brown with a pore surface that bruises black, while Bondarzewia berkeleyi produces cream to tan fans with much larger, coarse angular pores and thick, very tough flesh.
