White Spindles Identification Guide

A practical walk-through for recognising Clavaria fragilis in short mossy turf, from the tufted white clubs and their brittle snap to the white spore print and the club fungi most often confused with it.

The moment you spot it

White Spindles is a grassland fungus, and the setting usually tells you as much as the fungus does. You are most often standing on short, close-cropped, unfertilised turf: an old churchyard, a lawn that has never been fed, a dune slack, a hill pasture grazed by sheep, or a mossy verge. The first impression is of a small handful of white matchsticks or dropped noodles pushed up through the moss, three to eight centimetres tall and only two to four millimetres thick, standing in a dense tuft. From ten paces the tuft reads as a pale smudge in the green; crouch down and it resolves into a bundle of individual, unbranched clubs.

That combination of characters is the whole identification in miniature: white, simple (never branched), clustered, brittle, in mossy grassland. Everything below is the slow version of that sentence.

Reading the fruit body

Clavarioid fungi have no cap and no gills, so the usual sequence of cap-gills-stipe has to be replaced by a careful read of a single simple structure. Take one club between finger and thumb and look at it with a hand lens.

The club is cylindrical, often slightly flattened or longitudinally furrowed, and it tapers a little towards the tip. Young clubs are pointed; older ones blunt off, and the extreme tip frequently discolours to ochre, dull yellow or pale brown while the rest of the club stays white. Some clubs are gently curved or wavy rather than ramrod straight, and in a crowded tuft they lean on one another. Crucially, the club never forks: if you find repeated branching, you are looking at a different genus altogether.

The surface is smooth and matte, without ridges, wrinkles or veins. Wet material can look faintly translucent, almost waxy, with the flesh reading as slightly greyish through the surface; in dry weather the same clubs turn chalky and opaque.

The spore-bearing surface

There is no discrete hymenophore to examine. The fertile layer is spread over the entire outer surface of the club except for a short sterile zone at the very base, which is often a millimetre or two of slightly more translucent, sometimes faintly greyish tissue. Under a lens this fertile surface is featureless and even. Do not go looking for gills, pores or teeth; their complete absence, combined with the unbranched form, places the fungus among the simple club fungi immediately.

Flesh and colour change

The specific epithet does the work here. Bend a club and it snaps cleanly, like a thin stick of chalk, rather than bending rubberily or tearing into fibres. The interior is white and often becomes hollow or chambered in mature specimens, so a snapped club may show a narrow cavity down the centre.

There is no latex, no milk and no dramatic bruising reaction. Handled clubs may pick up a dull yellowish or brownish tone over hours, and old tufts brown from the tips downwards, but you will not see blueing, reddening or blackening on cutting. A specimen that blackens strongly on handling belongs elsewhere.

Growth habit as a character

White Spindles almost always grows gregariously, in tight fascicles of several to dozens of clubs rising from the same patch of soil. Importantly, the clubs stand side by side but are not fused into a common trunk. Tease the base apart with a fingernail: each club runs down independently into the moss and soil. A single club growing on its own is possible in a poor season, but a tuft is the norm and is one of the more reliable separating characters.

Taking and reading a spore print

Club fungi print perfectly well if you give them a little more time than a gilled mushroom. Lay four or five clubs flat on a sheet of paper that is half white and half black, cover them with an upturned bowl to keep the humidity up, and leave them for four to eight hours. The deposit forms as a fine dusting along the length of each club rather than as a neat radial pattern.

The print is white, sometimes drying to the palest cream. Under the microscope the spores are small, smooth, broadly ellipsoid to almost tear-shaped, roughly five to seven micrometres long, and they do not turn blue-black in Melzer's reagent. Any print with pink, ochre or rust tones rules the species out.

Substrate and season

This is a soil and litter fungus of nutrient-poor grassland, and it belongs to the same community as the waxcaps, pinkgills and earth tongues. If you are finding Hygrocybe species and small Entoloma species in the same square metre, you are in exactly the right habitat. Moss cover, a short sward and a long history of no fertiliser are the environmental signatures.

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, peaking after the first sustained wet spells of September and October in temperate regions and persisting until hard frost. It also turns up on mossy lawns, on grassy woodland rides and among dune grasses, and occasionally on bare mossy soil at the edges of paths.

Separating it from the look-alikes

Clavaria acuta is the hardest call. It is also white and also unbranched, but it grows singly or in small scattered groups rather than tufts, has a sharply pointed apex, and shows a short but distinct translucent stem-like base that is often greyish. It favours bare compacted soil, path edges and disturbed ground more than dense turf.

Clavaria fumosa grows in comparable tufts but is smoky grey, pinkish-grey or pale tan rather than white, and the clubs tend to be stouter.

Ramariopsis kunzei is white and can grow in grassland, but it branches repeatedly from a short common base into a small coral-like tuft. Any forking rules out White Spindles.

Clavulina coralloides is also white and branched, with blunt, crested tips, and is a woodland fungus of soil under trees rather than a turf specialist.

Clavulinopsis species that occur in the same grassland are almost always yellow, orange or apricot, so colour separates them at a glance.

Macrotyphula juncea produces very thin, thread-like clubs barely a millimetre across, usually solitary or in loose troops on fallen leaves and twigs in woodland, with a slightly darker, finely downy lower stem. Its habitat and extreme slenderness are decisive.

Xylaria hypoxylon in its early white stage can be mistaken for a club fungus, but it is tough rather than brittle, has a black lower portion, and grows on dead wood.

Geoglossum and Trichoglossum species share the grassland but are black and have a flattened, distinctly differentiated fertile head.

Quick field checklist

Unbranched white clubs, tufted, brittle enough to snap, growing from mossy short turf in autumn, with a smooth fertile surface running the length of the club and a white spore print. If all six agree, White Spindles is the answer; if any one disagrees, work back through the look-alikes above.

Common questions

What single feature most reliably separates White Spindles from other white club fungi?
The combination of a completely unbranched club and a densely tufted growth habit. Branched white species such as Ramariopsis kunzei and Clavulina coralloides are excluded by the branching, while Clavaria acuta is excluded by growing singly or in small scattered groups and by its sharply pointed apex and short translucent stem-like base.
Where should I be looking to find it?
