Overview

Wolf Lichen (Letharia vulpina) is a fruticose lichen of the family Parmeliaceae, and one of the most instantly recognisable lichens in the northern hemisphere thanks to its startling chartreuse to sulphur-yellow colour. The pigment responsible saturates the whole thallus, so even a small fragment stuck to a fallen branch is identifiable at a glance from several metres away.

Like all lichens, it is not a single organism but a partnership: a fungus (the mycobiont) provides the structural thallus, while a green algal partner housed inside the cortex carries out photosynthesis. The fungus determines the form, colour and reproductive structures, which is why lichens are named after their fungal component.

What makes Letharia distinctive is the combination of colour and growth form. The thallus is erect to somewhat pendent, densely and irregularly branched, and covered in coarse warts and granular outgrowths, giving it a rough, almost coral-like texture quite unlike the smooth strap-shaped branches of most other yellowish lichens.

The thallus is fruticose (shrubby and three-dimensional rather than flat), forming tufts typically 2-8 cm across, sometimes larger on old snags. Branching is irregular and angular, with branches roughly round to slightly flattened in cross-section and often somewhat wrinkled or pitted.

Colour and surface

Colour is the headline feature: a vivid yellow-green to greenish-yellow, sometimes described as chartreuse, uniform over the whole surface with no pale underside (fruticose lichens have no upper and lower face). The surface is roughened by abundant isidia and soredia — small granular and powdery vegetative propagules — which give a dusty, warty texture and are the main means of spread.

Reproductive structures

Apothecia (disc-shaped fungal fruiting bodies) are uncommon in L. vulpina, which relies mostly on the granular propagules. When present they are brown discs rimmed with the yellow thallus tissue, borne on branch tips.

Substrate attachment

The tufts attach by a narrow holdfast to bark or wood, and detached pieces are frequently found scattered on the forest floor beneath colonised trees.

Where and when it grows

Wolf Lichen grows on the bark, branches and weathered dead wood of conifers, especially pines, larches, firs and Douglas fir, and is often abundant on standing dead snags and fence rails made of conifer timber. It favours dry, open, well-lit montane and subalpine forests with cold winters and low summer humidity, and is scarce in dense shaded stands.

The distribution is broadly western North America — from British Columbia and Alberta south through the Cascades, Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains — with a separate European range in the Alps, Scandinavia and other mountain regions. It is perennial and visible in every season, though it is most conspicuous in winter when it stands out against snow and bare branches.

Ecological role

As a lichen, Letharia vulpina is a self-contained photosynthetic partnership rather than a decomposer or a mycorrhizal fungus. It draws no nutrition from its host tree; it merely perches on bark and dead wood, capturing water and dissolved minerals from rain, fog and dust. This makes it an epiphyte rather than a parasite.

Ecologically it contributes to nutrient cycling in dry conifer forests, traps airborne dust and moisture, and provides nesting material and cover for birds and small mammals. Its heavy reliance on isidia and soredia means colonies spread locally by fragments carried on wind, birds and falling branches, so populations are often clustered on a few heavily encrusted trees.

Similar species

The closest relative, Letharia columbiana, shares the same yellow-green colour but has a smoother thallus with far fewer granular propagules and frequently bears large brown apothecia on the branch tips — essentially the reverse of L. vulpina, which is warty and rarely fruits. Vulpicida species such as Vulpicida canadensis are also bright yellow but are foliose, forming flat leafy lobes with a distinct upper and lower surface rather than shrubby three-dimensional tufts.

Some Usnea species can look superficially similar in colour but are far paler yellow-green and, critically, have a tough white elastic central cord revealed when a branch is gently pulled apart — Letharia has no such cord. Ramalina species are also branched and greenish but are strap-flattened, smooth and lack the intense chartreuse pigment.
