Wood Woollyfoot Identification Guide
How to pin down Gymnopus peronatus among the small tan litter mushrooms: the hygrophanous wrinkled cap, distant gills, tough pliant stipe, and the dense woolly sleeve of mycelium at the very base.
First Impression and Setting
October, a beech or oak wood on a well-drained bank, and the leaf litter is studded with hundreds of small tan mushrooms on wiry stems. They stand up out of the drifts rather than nestling in them, they are not fragile, and when you take hold of one it does not break off — it lifts, dragging a clot of bound leaves with it. That clot is the character the species is named for. Wood Woollyfoot is one of the most abundant litter agarics of temperate broadleaf woodland in late summer and autumn, gregarious in wide scattered troops rather than in tight clusters, and it repays learning because so much else in the litter is superficially the same colour and size.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 2 to 6 cm across, convex at first, then flattening and often developing a shallow central depression with a slightly raised, wavy margin. The surface is dry and matt, not greasy and not viscid, and in mature specimens it becomes distinctly wrinkled and radially grooved, so that the outer third looks pleated when you hold it against the light. Colour is a warm ochre, tan, reddish-buff or leathery brown, and it is hygrophanous: fresh damp caps are darker and richer, and as they dry they pale from the centre outward to a washed yellowish-buff or nearly cream. Because of this, colour is the least reliable of the characters here. What is reliable is the thin, tough, slightly leathery feel of the cap flesh between finger and thumb.
Reading the Gills
Turn it over. The gills are the second key. They are adnexed to almost free, attached only narrowly at the stipe, and they are noticeably distant — well spaced, with clear gaps between them, and moderately broad. Count them across a radius and you will find far fewer than in the crowded-gilled litter species. Their colour starts pale cream to yellowish-buff and darkens with age to ochre, sometimes acquiring a reddish or rust-tinged flush along the edges in old specimens. The gill edges themselves are even rather than serrated. There is no veil, no ring and no colour change when the gills are bruised.
Stipe, Base and the Woolly Foot
The stipe is 4 to 9 cm long but only 2 to 6 mm thick, which gives the mushroom a long-legged, wiry look. It is tough, pliant and fibrous: bend it and it flexes, twists and finally tears along its length rather than snapping cleanly like the brittle stems of Russula or the soft ones of Mycena. It is cylindrical or slightly compressed, longitudinally fibrillose, and coloured pale yellowish above, deepening to ochre-yellow and then reddish-brown toward the base. The base is the diagnosis. It is clothed in a dense, conspicuous, woolly to shaggy sleeve of white to pale yellow mycelial hairs, thick enough to look like a felt boot pulled on over the stem, and this wool grips leaves, needles and soil so firmly that the mushroom comes up with a matted plug attached. Always lift the specimen intact; cutting it at ground level throws away the whole point.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice a fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is thin, tough and pallid to pale buff, more or less concolorous with the surfaces, and there is no latex, no gel layer and no colour change on exposure to air. Bruising produces nothing dramatic — at most a slow darkening to a slightly deeper ochre where the tissue is crushed. The odour is faint and unremarkable, sometimes very slightly sharp. Toughness is itself a recorded character here: dried specimens shrivel but stay intact, and can rehydrate and stand up again after rain, which is unusual among small litter agarics.
Taking and Reading the Spore Print
Small caps drop thin prints, so improve your odds by using three or four mature caps at once. Cut the stipes flush, arrange the caps gills-down on a piece of black card or dark glass with a strip of white paper alongside for comparison, cover them with a bowl to exclude draughts, and leave them six to eight hours or overnight. The print is white to very pale cream. Against dark card the deposit shows as a pale radiating fan; if it looks too thin to judge, scrape it into a pile with a blade. Microscopically the spores are smooth, ellipsoid to slightly teardrop-shaped, roughly 8 to 10 by 3 to 4.5 micrometres, and they are inamyloid, showing no blue reaction in iodine solutions.
Substrate and Season
This is a litter decomposer. It grows directly from fallen leaves, needles, small twigs and half-rotted plant fragments, and its mycelium binds them into the mat that surrounds the stipe base. It is most abundant under beech and oak but also fruits in mixed and coniferous woodland, on well-drained banks, along path edges and in the drier parts of the leaf bed. The season runs from midsummer through to late autumn, with the biggest flushes in September and October in temperate regions. Fruit bodies are long-lasting compared to other small agarics, so a troop may be worth revisiting to watch the caps fade and wrinkle.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
Gymnopus dryophilus is the commonest confusion because it grows in the same litter at the same time and is a similar tan colour. It differs in having crowded, narrow, whitish gills instead of well-spaced buff ones, a smoother, more polished cap, and a stipe base with only a little fine white down — never a thick woolly boot.
Gymnopus confluens grows in dense tufts of many fruit bodies fused at a common base, has very crowded narrow gills, a paler pinkish-buff cap, and a stipe that is finely velvety over its whole length rather than woolly only at the foot.
Gymnopus fusipes forms clusters at the base of oak trunks and stumps, with a spindle-shaped, grooved, twisted and often rooting stipe and gills that develop rusty spots; it is much tougher and larger.
Rhodocollybia butyracea has a smooth, greasy, buttery-feeling cap surface, crowded whitish gills with finely toothed edges, a club-shaped but not woolly base, and drops a pale pinkish-cream print.
Marasmius species share the wiry stem and tough texture, but their stipes are usually thinner, darker, and shining or horn-like, their gills are fewer and more distant still, and their caps are often deeply pleated and much smaller. Several revive after drying in the same way, so check the base for the woolly sleeve rather than relying on texture alone.
