A thin, leathery toothed fungus forming zoned cinnamon funnels that fuse into rosettes across mossy conifer floors. Its white spore print separates it from the similar brown-spored Hydnellum species.

Overview

Woolly Tooth is a small, tough member of Phellodon, the white-spored genus of stalked hydnoid fungi. Individual caps are thin and funnel-shaped with neat concentric banding, and because neighbouring fruiting bodies fuse readily, a colony often appears as an overlapping rosette or a rippling sheet of joined funnels spreading over moss and needle litter.

Along with Hydnellum, Sarcodon and Bankera, this genus belongs to the Thelephorales. The stipitate hydnoids of this order are a distinctive ecological guild: ground-dwelling, ectomycorrhizal, tough-fleshed, long-persisting, and concentrated on poor soils in old woodland. Phellodon alone among them produces white spores.

P. tomentosus is the palest and thinnest of the common European members of the genus. Its combination of a strongly zoned cinnamon funnel, a felted texture, very thin leathery flesh and a white print makes it a useful reference point when learning to sort the brown-capped hydnoids apart.

How to identify it

Cap

Small, usually 2-6 cm across, flat at first and soon developing a distinct central depression or full funnel shape, often with a small perforation at the very centre. The surface is silky to finely felted, drying matted, and marked with clear concentric zones running from a white to pale cream growing margin inward through buff and cinnamon to chestnut or dark brown. Caps commonly fuse edge to edge into compound rosettes.

Spines

The underside is covered with very short, crowded, decurrent spines around 1-2 mm long, white to pale grey at first and ageing grey to greyish-brown, running a little way down the stalk.

Stipe

Slender relative to the genus, 1-4 cm tall and only a few millimetres thick, brown to dark brown, felted, tough and often fused with the stalks of adjoining fruiting bodies at the base.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is extremely thin, no more than a millimetre or two, and leathery to corky rather than fleshy, pale brown and faintly zoned. The spore print is white, with colourless, rounded, finely spiny spores. Dried material develops the sweet fenugreek-like odour typical of Phellodon.

Where and when it grows

This fungus grows on the ground in coniferous woodland, particularly among moss and needle litter under pine and spruce on acidic, sandy, nutrient-poor soils. It is also found occasionally in mixed woodland with birch and oak on similarly impoverished ground. Colonies typically appear as clusters of fused caps carpeting small patches of moss on banks, path edges and open woodland floor.

Fruiting occurs from late summer into autumn, and the tough dried fruiting bodies remain recognisable for months afterwards. The species is widespread across Europe, temperate and boreal Asia and North America. Like the rest of the stipitate hydnoid guild it has declined in nitrogen-enriched and intensively managed forests, and it is treated as an indicator of woodland continuity in several national survey schemes.

Ecological role

Phellodon tomentosus is ectomycorrhizal, partnering mainly with pine and spruce. Its hyphae form a sheath over the tree's fine root tips and extend into the surrounding soil, mobilising phosphorus and nitrogen from mineral and organic sources and delivering water, while receiving photosynthetic sugars from the host. On thin sandy soils this exchange is a major factor in how well the trees grow.

The mycelium is perennial and forms extensive mats that knit together the soil and litter beneath a colony, which is why fruiting bodies emerge with moss, needles and grass blades embedded in their tissue. Fruiting recurs in the same patches for many years, and because the fungus is intolerant of added nitrogen and of soil compaction, its continued presence marks stable, unenriched forest ground.

Similar species

Zoned Tooth (Hydnellum concrescens) is the classic confusion: similar zoned flat caps that fuse together, but it is thicker, pinker to reddish-brown, and drops a brown spore print instead of white. Phellodon connatus is close in size but has a paler, greyer, less strongly zoned cap and a blacker stalk. Black Tooth (Phellodon niger) is much darker and thicker with sharply duplex soft-over-hard flesh.

Coltricia perennis is a strong visual match at a distance, sharing the zoned funnel-shaped cap and the same sandy woodland habitat, but turning it over settles the matter instantly: it has a surface of small angular pores, not spines. Where the fertile surface is worn, the thin leathery flesh and white spore deposit still identify Phellodon.
