A bulky coral fungus with a stout white trunk and crowded lemon to sulphur-yellow branches. The white flesh characteristically stains reddish then brown where bruised.

Overview

Yellow Coral forms large, fleshy, many-branched clusters that rise from a distinctly thick white base. The contrast between the pale, almost chalky trunk and the lemon to sulphur-yellow branches above it is the species' signature look, especially in young, freshly emerged specimens.

It belongs to Ramaria in the family Gomphaceae, a genus of coral-shaped fungi that carry their spore-producing surface over the whole exterior of the branch system. Ramaria flava is one of the classic European broadleaf-woodland species and has long served as a reference point against which other yellow corals are compared.

A useful behavioural character supports the visual one: the white flesh reacts to injury, developing wine-red then brown tones where it is pressed, scratched or cut, which helps place doubtful material within the yellow-coral group.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

A broad, dense, bush-like cluster 8-20 cm across and 7-15 cm tall, growing singly or in scattered groups from woodland soil. The base is a single short, thick, white trunk up to several centimetres wide.

Branches and tips

Main limbs fork repeatedly into crowded, upright, cylindrical branches of pale lemon, sulphur or chrome yellow. The forks are U-shaped and the crowded terminal branchlets end in short, blunt, two- or three-pointed tips, often slightly paler yellow than the branches below. With age the whole cluster dulls toward ochre or tan.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is white, brittle and marbled in cross-section. Handling, bruising or cutting produces slow wine-red to reddish-brown staining, most obvious on the pale trunk. The spore print is pale yellow to ochre; spores are elongate with a minutely warted surface.

Where and when it grows

This coral fruits from soil and leaf litter under beech above all, and also under oak, hornbeam and mixed broadleaf canopy, favouring deep humus on neutral to lime-rich ground. Clusters can appear scattered, in small troops or in wide arcs marking the outward growth of the mycelium.

The main season is late summer through autumn, following sustained rainfall. It is widespread in Europe and reported from parts of temperate Asia; several superficially similar yellow corals in North America and in conifer forests belong to separate species.

Ecological role

Yellow Coral is ectomycorrhizal, forming a sheath around fine tree roots and a network of hyphae between the outer root cells. Through this interface the fungus delivers water and soil nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen compounds it can access from litter that roots cannot reach directly, in return for sugars from the tree.

The perennial underground mycelium can occupy the same patch of woodland for many years, and its dense hyphal web helps stabilise soil structure and retain moisture. Fruiting bodies are short-lived by comparison, softening and collapsing within a couple of weeks while shedding spores across their entire branch surface.

Similar species

Ramaria aurea is a deeper egg-yellow to golden throughout and shows weaker or slower discoloration when bruised. Ramaria formosa has salmon to apricot-pink branches with contrasting yellow tips rather than an all-yellow branch system. Ramaria stricta is smaller, tan, strictly parallel-branched and attached to wood by white cords.

Small yellow club and coral fungi of grassland such as Clavulinopsis fusiformis and Ramariopsis crocea are only a few centimetres tall, unbranched or sparsely forked, and give a white spore print rather than an ochre-yellow one.

What is the most useful field character?
The combination of a thick chalky-white trunk with lemon to sulphur-yellow branches above it, plus flesh that stains wine-red then brown where bruised. Together these place a large yellow woodland coral in this species group.
Does the colour change with age?
Yes. Bright sulphur-yellow branches dull to ochre and tan as the fruiting body matures and weathers, so colour alone is unreliable on old specimens; the trunk shape and bruising reaction remain more consistent.
Is it attached to wood?
No. It emerges from soil and leaf litter because it is a mycorrhizal partner of broadleaf trees. Corals attached to stumps, logs or woodchip belong to wood-decaying species such as Ramaria stricta.

A pale yellow to ochre deposit confirms Ramaria and rules out the white-spored coral genera Clavulina, Clavaria, Clavulinopsis and Ramariopsis, whose species are also generally far smaller.
