A colourful rustgill with a purplish-red, fibrillose-scaly cap and brilliant yellow gills that mature to rust, commonly clustered on wood chip beds.
Overview
Yellow-gilled Gymnopilus (Gymnopilus luteofolius) is one of the more striking members of its genus, combining a wine-red to purplish-crimson young cap with vivid lemon-yellow gills — a colour combination shared by few other wood-inhabiting agarics. The species name translates directly as "yellow-gilled", and those gills darken to a rusty cinnamon that matches the genus-typical spore deposit.
Gymnopilus is a genus of exclusively wood-associated agarics with warty spores, rusty spore prints and yellowish flesh, placed in the family Hymenogastraceae. Within it, G. luteofolius is distinguished by its purplish pigments, its densely fibrillose-scaly cap surface, and by the way its colours shift dramatically with age — a bright bicoloured young cluster can fade within days to a uniformly dull yellow-ochre group that looks like a different species entirely.
It is best known in North America, where it has become a familiar coloniser of landscaping wood chips and mulch beds, appearing in gardens, parks and roadside plantings well outside natural forest.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2–10 cm across, convex to broadly convex, becoming flattened and often slightly uplifted at the margin with age. Young caps are dark wine-red, purplish-crimson or brick-red and are densely covered with fine fibrillose scales, which are often paler and give the surface a slightly frosted or streaked look. With exposure and age the red pigments fade markedly, and older caps may be dull yellowish-ochre, tawny or olive-tinged, with the red persisting longest at the centre or along the margin.
Gills
The gills are close, adnate to slightly notched, and start a bright, clear yellow that is one of the most reliable field characters. They dull progressively to orange-yellow and then to rusty cinnamon as the spores ripen, and older gill faces are often rust-spotted. The edges may remain paler yellow.
Stipe
The stipe is 3–9 cm long and 4–12 mm thick, roughly equal or slightly enlarged at the base, and often curved where caps grow in tight clusters. It is yellowish above and reddish-brown to purplish below, with a fibrillose or silky surface. A thin fibrillose ring zone is usually present in young specimens and is quickly obscured by rusty falling spores; it may vanish entirely in age. The base is often clothed in whitish to yellowish mycelial down.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is yellowish to pale purplish-tinged, and cut or bruised tissue frequently develops greenish-blue to blue-green discolouration, particularly in the stipe base and on damaged gill edges. The spore print is rusty orange-brown; the spores are warty under magnification.
Where and when it grows
This species is a wood decomposer with a broad substrate tolerance. It fruits on hardwood and coniferous logs, stumps, buried roots and slash, but has become most conspicuous on landscaping wood chips, bark mulch and sawdust, where it can form large clustered troops across freshly laid beds. It is regularly reported from gardens, parks, campus plantings, roadside strips and other managed ground as well as from natural woodland.
Fruiting runs from summer through late autumn, and in mild-winter regions it may continue well past the first frosts. It is widespread in North America, occurring on both coasts and inland, and has been recorded from parts of Europe, Asia and Australasia, its spread likely helped by the movement of mulch and chipped wood.
Ecological role
Gymnopilus luteofolius is saprotrophic, deriving all its nutrition from dead plant material. It causes a brown rot of woody substrates, degrading cellulose and hemicellulose and leaving behind a brown, crumbly, cube-cracked residue. Its readiness to colonise fresh chips makes it an early successional species on newly disturbed mulch, where the mycelium can run rapidly through loosely packed fragments.
By accelerating the breakdown of chipped and shredded wood, it plays a practical role in the nutrient cycling of managed landscapes, converting bulky, nutrient-poor mulch into soil organic matter. Its heavy fruiting on such beds also supplies a concentrated seasonal resource for fungus gnats, springtails, mites and slugs.
Similar species
Spectacular Rustgill (Gymnopilus junonius) is larger and more robust with a golden to orange-tawny cap that never shows the purplish-red tones, and it carries a persistent membranous ring on a stout, often bulbous stipe. Scaly Rustgill (Gymnopilus sapineus) and Common Rustgill (G. penetrans) are smaller and consistently tawny-ochre, lacking both the red cap pigments and the strong yellow gill colour.
Wine Cap (Stropharia rugosoannulata) also fruits abundantly on wood chips and has a reddish cap, but it differs completely in having a thick, radially split, star-like ring, greyish to purple-black gills and a dark purple-brown spore print. Various Pholiota species share the scaly cap and wood habit but have viscid caps and duller brown, not rusty, spore deposits.
