Yellow Morel

A spring ascomycete with a pale tan to yellow-ochre honeycombed head, its pits irregular and its ridges paler than the pits. Head and stalk are joined at the base and the whole fruiting body is hollow from tip to foot.
Overview
The Yellow Morel is the classic spring morel of temperate woodland and one of the most distinctive fungi anywhere. It is an ascomycete, not a gilled fungus, and its 'cap' is not a cap at all but a fertile head whose surface is thrown into a network of ridges surrounding deep pits. Spores are produced in microscopic sacs lining those pits and are puffed out in visible clouds when a ripe specimen is jarred.
Morchella esculenta in the strict sense belongs to the pale or yellow morel group, a cluster of closely related species that modern DNA work has split into several taxa which are nearly impossible to separate in the field. Names such as M. americana, M. cf. esculenta and the older M. crassipes and M. vulgaris all circulate for members of this complex, and many field guides treat them collectively as the yellow morels.
What makes the group instantly recognisable is the combination of a true morel construction - completely hollow from the top of the head to the base of the stalk, with head and stalk fused at their junction - and a spring fruiting season when little else of similar form is about.
How to identify it
Head
Roughly egg-shaped to conical or rounded, 3-10 cm tall and 2-7 cm wide, its surface deeply pitted and ridged like a honeycomb or a natural sponge. The pits are irregular in size and shape and arranged without any strong vertical order. Colour is pale cream, tan, buff, ochre or greyish when young, deepening to warm yellow-brown or dull ochre with age; the ridges are usually the same colour as or paler than the pits and do not darken markedly.
Attachment
Critically, the lower rim of the head is fused directly to the stalk - there is no free skirt hanging loose around the stalk. Cut vertically, the head and stalk form one continuous hollow chamber.
Stalk
White to pale cream or buff, 2-8 cm tall, cylindrical or swollen and often broadened, furrowed or somewhat wrinkled and finely granular at the base. It is hollow throughout.
Flesh and spore print
Thin, brittle and waxy in texture, whitish, hollow rather than solid or chambered with cottony fibres. The spore print is cream to pale yellow-ochre, best taken from a mature head laid on dark paper.
Where and when it grows
Yellow morels are ground-dwelling spring fungi of woodland and semi-open ground. They are especially associated with ash, elm, apple, tulip poplar, sycamore and old orchards, and with rich, moist, often calcareous or limestone-derived soils. They also appear on riverbanks and floodplains, in hedgerows, on landscaped ground and wood chip, and along disturbed edges such as track sides and building spoil.
The season is short and characteristic: spring, typically from March to May in temperate Europe and from March into June across North America depending on latitude and elevation. Fruiting is notoriously erratic from year to year, and a productive site may produce nothing the following season. The complex is widespread across Europe, North America and temperate Asia.
Ecological role
Morel ecology is unusually complex. Members of the yellow morel group appear to be facultative, switching between saprotrophic decomposition of soil organic matter and litter, and a mycorrhizal or endophytic association with the roots of trees such as ash, elm and apple. This dual capacity helps explain why they fruit both in undisturbed old woodland and on freshly disturbed ground.
Underground the fungus forms sclerotia - hard, compact nuggets of stored mycelium - which can survive adverse periods and then trigger fruiting when conditions change, often after disturbance, flooding, tree death or fire. Spore discharge is active: the asci lining the pits fire spores into the air in a synchronised puff, sometimes visible as a smoke-like cloud with an audible hiss when a ripe head is tapped. The many pits and ridges greatly increase the fertile surface area packed into a small fruiting body.
Similar species
The Black Morel group (Morchella elata, M. angusticeps and relatives) is separated by its darker, grey to olive to black ridges that contrast sharply with paler pits, by pits arranged in more clearly vertical, ladder-like rows, and by a more conical head. Both are true morels with fused heads and hollow interiors.
Half-free morels (Morchella semilibera) have a small head attached only around its upper half, so the lower rim hangs free as a distinct skirt around the stalk, and the stalk is disproportionately long. False morels of the genus Gyromitra differ fundamentally: their heads are wrinkled, lobed and brain-like rather than pitted with ridges, and a vertical cut shows an irregularly chambered, cottony-stuffed interior instead of one clean hollow cavity. The Thimble Morels (Verpa species) have smooth or merely wrinkled thimble-like caps attached only at the very apex, hanging free like a bell over the stalk.
