Overview
Yellow Stagshorn looks like a coral fungus but is in fact a jelly fungus, and the difference is obvious the moment it is touched: the branches are rubbery, elastic and slightly greasy rather than dry and brittle, and they spring back when bent instead of snapping. In colour it is one of the most vivid fungi of conifer forest, an intense egg-yolk to orange-yellow that stands out sharply against dark rotting wood and green moss.
Calocera belongs to the Dacrymycetes, a class of jelly fungi defined by tuning-fork-shaped basidia — each spore-producing cell divides into just two long prongs, unlike the four-pronged basidia of typical mushrooms. That microscopic feature unites Calocera with Dacrymyces and Dacryopinax, all of which produce orange to yellow gelatinous fruiting bodies on wood.
The species is common, long-lasting and easy to name, and it is frequently the brightest thing on the forest floor late in the season, persisting well after most fleshy fungi have collapsed.
How to identify it
Fruiting body
Upright, branched, antler-like tufts 2 to 10 cm tall, occasionally taller. Branching is irregular and often sparse, with two to several main arms dividing once or twice into forked tips. Tips are pointed or bluntly forked. Individual branches are 2 to 6 mm thick, often slightly flattened and grooved.
Texture and colour
The texture is the diagnostic feature: tough, gelatinous and rubbery, elastic when bent, and viscid or slightly slimy when wet — hence viscosa. Colour is bright golden yellow to orange-yellow, sometimes deepening to orange in exposed positions and drying to a hard, darker orange-red horn-like mass that revives when rewetted.
Base
The base tapers into a distinct rooting extension that runs down into the wood, often deep into a buried root or a crack in a stump. This root is usually whitish or paler than the branches and is a reliable feature — pulling a specimen up brings a tapering white foot with it.
Flesh and spore print
The interior is yellow, gelatinous and tough. The spore print is white to pale yellow. Microscopically the basidia are the classic Dacrymycetes tuning fork, splitting into two long curved prongs, and the spores are cylindrical to sausage-shaped and become one- to three-septate at maturity.
Where and when it grows
Yellow Stagshorn grows on dead conifer wood — stumps, fallen trunks, large branches, sawn timber and, very commonly, buried roots so that fruiting bodies appear to emerge straight from the soil or moss. Spruce and pine are the usual hosts, with fir, larch and Douglas-fir also colonised. It is only rarely reported on broadleaved wood.
The season is long, running from summer through autumn and often well into early winter, since the gelatinous tissue tolerates frost and rehydrates after drying. It is widespread and common throughout the conifer forests and plantations of Europe, across temperate and boreal North America, and through temperate Asia. Managed conifer plantations with plenty of stump material are particularly productive.
Ecological role
Calocera viscosa is a saprotroph on conifer wood, causing a brown rot in which cellulose and hemicellulose are consumed while lignin is left behind, leaving the residual wood brown, crumbly and often cracked into cubical blocks. It typically arrives at a moderately advanced stage of decay, following primary colonisers.
The gelatinous construction is an adaptation to exposure. Fruiting bodies can dry to a hard horn-like remnant during dry spells and reconstitute within hours of rain, resuming spore production — a strategy shared across the jelly fungi that lets them fruit for months rather than days. The rooting base anchors the tuft firmly and taps into the deeper decaying wood where the mycelium is concentrated. In forest ecosystems the species contributes to the slow breakdown of conifer stumps and roots, and its persistent bright fruiting bodies are a familiar late-season feature of plantation floors.
Similar species
Calocera cornea is the closest relative, but it is much smaller — usually under 1 cm — mostly unbranched or simply forked, paler yellow, and grows on broadleaved wood in small crowded groups along cracks. Calocera furcata is small and typically forked once, on conifer wood.
Clavulinopsis corniculata and other yellow grassland corals are superficially similar in colour and branching but are dry and brittle rather than rubbery, snap cleanly, and grow in turf rather than from wood. Ramaria species growing on woody debris are larger, more densely branched from a fleshy trunk, dry-textured and produce ochre spore prints. Dacrymyces species share the jelly texture and orange colour but form unbranched blobs, cushions or discs rather than upright antlers. When in doubt, bend a branch: elastic and rubbery means Calocera.
