Yellow-veiled Amanita Identification Guide
A field walk-through for Amanita augusta, the western conifer-forest Amanita whose dark olive-brown cap is dusted with chrome-yellow veil crumbs and whose bulb wears yellow scaly bands.
The Moment You Spot It
The usual setting is a damp western conifer wood in late autumn: Douglas-fir duff, a scatter of needles, maybe tanoak or madrone leaves mixed in. What catches the eye is a contrast rather than a colour. The cap is dark, an olive-brown to bronze-brown dome, and sitting on that dark ground are crumbs and patches of a startlingly bright mustard to chrome yellow. Nothing else in the litter looks quite like a chocolate-coloured cap sprinkled with powdered turmeric. The stature is solid rather than dainty, the stipe is straight and pale, and the fruit body sits firmly anchored, which is a hint that you will have to dig rather than pluck.
Before touching anything, note the whole gestalt: free white gills, a hanging skirt-like ring, a swollen but not sac-covered base, and yellow veil remnants in at least two places. Those five observations, taken together, do most of the identification.
Working Through the Cap
Measure the cap first. Typical specimens run 5 to 13 cm across, starting hemispherical and expanding to convex and finally broadly flat, sometimes with a very shallow central depression in old material. Colour ranges through olive-brown, bronze, dark yellow-brown and warm tobacco, usually darkest over the disc and fading toward the edge. In wet weather the surface is slightly tacky; in dry weather it is matt and slightly fibrillose.
Now read the margin. It should be even and essentially non-striate, or at most faintly grooved in fully mature, waterlogged caps. A strongly ridged, comb-like margin points away from this species.
The veil remnants are the headline character. They begin as a felted to powdery yellow layer and break into irregular warts, flakes and thin patches that range from pale sulphur to deep chrome yellow. They are loosely attached. Heavy rain, slug grazing or a rough trip in a pocket can strip a cap almost bald, so never conclude that a warty species is absent just because one cap is clean. Look at the youngest button in the group, which will usually still be fully dressed.
Gills, Spore Print and the Underside
Turn the cap over. The gills are free from the stipe or at most narrowly attached, crowded, white to pale cream, with a minutely floccose or powdery edge visible with a hand lens. Short intermediate gills are numerous and their ends are cut off squarely rather than tapering. Importantly, the gills stay white or cream even when the veil is vividly yellow, so a mushroom with genuinely yellow gill faces is something else.
For a spore print, pick a cap that has fully opened, slice the stipe off flush, and lay the cap gill-side down on a sheet that is half black and half white so you can judge a pale deposit against both backgrounds. Cover it with a bowl or cup to keep humidity up and leave it three to six hours, or overnight if the fruit body is cool and dry. The deposit is white. If you have Melzer reagent, the spores of this group turn blue-grey, confirming placement in the amyloid-spored section that this species belongs to.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is 6 to 15 cm long and 1 to 2.5 cm thick, tapering gently upward, whitish to pale straw and often decorated with fine yellowish fibrils or small adhering flecks. Partway down the upper third hangs a membranous, skirt-like ring that persists well; its upper face is white and smooth, and its underside and edge are frequently tinted or flecked with the same yellow found on the cap. That yellow-edged ring is a strong supporting character.
The base is where identifications are won and lost. Dig, do not pull. Slide a knife blade into the duff and lever the whole base out intact. You should find a firm, ovoid to abruptly bulbous foot, distinctly wider than the stipe, with a rounded or slightly rimmed shoulder. There is no free, bag-like volva. Instead the universal veil breaks into concentric yellow scales, rings or a shaggy yellow girdle sitting on and just above the bulb. If a rain-washed cap has lost its warts, this bulb dressing is usually still intact under the litter.
Flesh and Colour Change
Split a fruit body lengthwise through cap and stipe. The flesh is firm and white throughout. Watch the cut surface for several minutes, especially in the stipe base and in any insect-tunnelled areas, where a slow dull brownish to vinaceous-brown discolouration often develops. It is a muted change, nothing like the instant flush of a bolete. There is no latex, no gel layer, and the stipe interior may become slightly stuffed or hollow with age.
Substrate, Season and Partners
This is an ectomycorrhizal species, so it grows from soil in partnership with tree roots and never on wood. In western North America, from British Columbia south through the Pacific states and into the Sierra Nevada, it associates with Douglas-fir, pines and spruce and also with oak, tanoak and madrone in mixed forest. Fruiting runs from the first serious autumn rains into winter, later in the season toward the south. Fruit bodies appear singly or in loose scattered groups rather than in tight clusters, and they often follow the drip line of a particular tree year after year.
Separating the Look-alikes on Structure
The closest confusion is with the grey-brown veiled Amanita franchetii, the European species whose name was long misapplied to western North American collections. That species tends to have a greyer, duller cap, veil warts in muted grey-yellow to olive tones, and a less crisply banded bulb. The species treated here reads brighter and more contrasty: darker cap, purer chrome-yellow veil, yellow-flushed ring edge.
Amanita gemmata has a pale yellow to buff cap with white warts, a clearly striate margin, and a small collared rim on the bulb. Amanita pantherina carries white warts on a brown cap, again with a grooved margin and a distinct collar-like roll at the top of the bulb. Amanita aprica, a spring species, shows a yellow cap with flattened yellowish patches that are pressed on rather than raised into warts. Amanita muscaria in its western form is red to orange with cream warts and concentric rings of scales on the bulb. Amanita novinupta bruises and ages pinkish and has no yellow veil at all. Run through cap ground colour, wart colour, margin striation and bulb architecture in that order and the species falls out quickly.
What to Record in the Field
Photograph the cap surface, the underside, a longitudinal section and the excavated base. Note the tree species within a few metres, whether the ground is conifer duff or hardwood leaf litter, and the exact colour of the veil while it is still fresh, because yellow pigments fade in storage. Those notes will make a herbarium specimen or a photograph far more useful later than any single close-up of the cap.
