A pale pinkish-buff oak associate whose white latex turns brilliant sulphur yellow within seconds of exposure. Faint concentric cap zoning and a whitish hollow stipe complete the picture.
Overview
The Yellowdrop Milkcap is defined by one of the most dramatic colour reactions in the genus. Cut a gill and the emerging white milk flashes to bright sulphur yellow in a matter of seconds, and the surrounding flesh yellows with it. No other common oak-associated milkcap does this so vividly or so fast.
Outwardly it is a pale, softly coloured species — pinkish buff, salmon or cream-ochre, with faint darker concentric zones on a dry to slightly greasy cap. That subdued appearance means it is regularly overlooked among the many brownish milkcaps beneath oaks until the latex test is applied.
It anchors a small group of Lactarius species whose latex yellows on exposure, a group whose members are separated from one another mainly by speed of reaction, host tree and cap colour. Within that group it is the largest and most vividly reacting of the common woodland species.
How to identify it
Cap
3–8 cm across, convex with an inrolled margin when young, expanding to flat and then shallowly depressed. The surface is smooth, dry to slightly greasy in damp weather, and coloured pale pinkish buff, salmon, cream-ochre or pale tan, usually with faint darker concentric zones or diffuse watery bands, sometimes almost unzoned in pale fruitbodies. The margin is even and smooth.
Gills
Crowded and narrow, adnate to slightly decurrent, pale cream to pinkish buff, discolouring yellowish where the latex has dried and browning in old fruitbodies.
Stipe
3–7 cm tall and 1–2 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly tapering, smooth, whitish to very pale buff and usually paler than the cap, soon becoming stuffed and then hollow.
Flesh and latex
The flesh is white and brittle, turning yellow where cut. The latex is white on emerging and changes within a few seconds to bright sulphur yellow, both on the gills and on a white tissue — the defining feature of the species. Odour is faint, sometimes slightly fruity. Spore deposit pale cream, occasionally with a yellowish tone.
Where and when it grows
This milkcap grows on soil in broadleaf woodland, predominantly with oak and sweet chestnut, and less commonly with beech. It favours light, sandy, well-drained and often acidic soils, and is frequently found on woodland banks, in open oak woodland, on heathy woodland edges and in parkland under scattered oaks.
Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, usually in scattered groups among leaf litter. It is common and widespread across Europe, extending into North Africa and western Asia, and occurs with oaks in parts of North America.
Ecological role
The Yellowdrop Milkcap is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheathing root associations chiefly with Quercus and Castanea. On the light sandy soils it prefers, water and nutrients drain quickly, and the extensive exploratory hyphae of the fungal partner give the host access to a far larger soil volume than roots alone, buffering it through dry spells.
The rapid yellowing of the latex results from an oxidation reaction in compounds carried in the laticifer hyphae, triggered as soon as the pressurised milk contacts air. The sticky, quickly setting deposit seals wounds and deters invertebrate grazing on the soft hymenium. Fruitbodies decay within days, while the mycelium remains a persistent component of the oak root zone.
Similar species
The Oakbug Milkcap (Lactarius quietus) shares oak habitat but is darker cinnamon-brown, more strongly zoned, has an oily odour and latex that stays white. The Birch Milkcap (Lactarius tabidus) also yellows but slowly, weakly, and only on tissue, and it is smaller, more orange-brown and tied to birch.
The Deceiving Milkcap (Lactarius decipiens) yellows quickly too but is smaller, darker tan, carries a geranium-like odour and prefers hornbeam and hazel. Lactarius scrobiculatus is far larger and yellow-capped with a bearded margin and pitted stipe, a very different overall build.
