A slender late-season funnel fungus with a brown perforated cap, greyish blunt ridges and a hollow, bright yellow stalk. It carpets mossy conifer floors and well-rotted wood in large troops.

Overview

Yellowfoot is the commonest late-season member of the Cantharellaceae in northern forests, and its name comes from the vivid yellow of its hollow stalk, which stands out against the drab grey-brown of the cap and ridges above. Fruit bodies are slight and rubbery-pliant rather than fleshy, and they arrive in enormous numbers, sometimes carpeting hectares of mossy conifer floor.

The species has moved between genera repeatedly, appearing in the literature as Cantharellus tubaeformis as well as Craterellus tubaeformis. Current treatments place it in Craterellus, alongside the black trumpets, on the basis of its hollow stalk, thin flesh and reduced fertile surface — though its ridges are considerably better developed than those of the true black trumpets.

It is a circumboreal fungus and one of the last to fruit in the year, often persisting through frosts and into the early winter when almost nothing else is showing.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 1–6 cm across, convex at first, then flat, then depressed and finally funnel-shaped, commonly developing a perforation at the centre that opens into the hollow stalk. The surface is dry, minutely scurfy to finely scaly, and yellow-brown, grey-brown or umber, sometimes almost olive. The margin is thin, wavy, lobed and inrolled at first.

Gills

The underside carries well-developed false gills — blunt, thick, wax-like, rather distant ridges that fork repeatedly and are connected by cross-veins, running decurrently onto the stalk. They are greyish-yellow to greyish-lilac when young and become distinctly grey or grey-brown with age.

Stipe

The stalk is 3–8 cm long and 3–10 mm thick, hollow throughout, often flattened, grooved or irregular, and characteristically bright yellow to orange-yellow — the feature that gives the fungus its common name. It may pale toward brownish in old specimens.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin, pliant, whitish to yellowish, and does not change colour on cutting. The odour is mild to faintly fruity. The spore print is white to pale cream.

Where and when it grows

This species fruits in mossy coniferous and mixed forest, frequently in Sphagnum and feather-moss carpets, on damp acidic ground, on well-rotted conifer logs and stumps and along the margins of bogs. It is markedly gregarious, forming troops of hundreds and often growing directly out of moss cushions or decaying wood.

The main season is autumn, extending well into early winter and continuing after the first frosts, which makes it one of the last significant fungal flushes of the year. Its distribution is circumboreal, covering northern and montane Europe, northern Asia and much of North America from the Pacific Northwest and boreal Canada to the northeastern states.

Ecological role

Yellowfoot is ectomycorrhizal with conifers, especially spruce, pine, fir and hemlock, forming mantled root tips and a fine mycelium that spreads through moss and rotting wood. Because so much of its substrate is decayed timber and moss, it works at the interface between the mycorrhizal and decomposer worlds, drawing nutrients from partly decomposed organic matter and channelling them into living trees.

Its capacity to colonise well-rotted logs and moss carpets makes it a key participant in nutrient recycling in damp boreal and montane forest, where cold and acidity slow decomposition. Fruiting on such a scale, and so late in the year, it is also an important autumn resource for slugs, small mammals and fungus-feeding insects.

Similar species

Craterellus lutescens is very close in size, colour and habitat, but its fertile underside is nearly smooth or only faintly wrinkled rather than carrying distinct blunt ridges, and its stalk and underside are a warmer orange. Craterellus ignicolor is more orange throughout with thinner, more delicate ridges and is a chiefly eastern North American species. Craterellus cornucopioides is uniformly sooty grey-black with no yellow stalk and an almost smooth outer face.

The Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) is much fleshier, yellow-orange all over, and has a solid stalk with no hollow centre or perforated cap.

Why is the cap often perforated in the middle?
The stalk is hollow, and as the cap becomes deeply funnel-shaped its centre thins and breaks through, opening a hole into the tube below. This perforation is a helpful field character.
What separates it from *Craterellus lutescens*?
The underside. Yellowfoot has distinct, blunt, forking gill-like ridges in greyish tones; *Craterellus lutescens* has a nearly smooth or faintly wrinkled underside in warmer orange shades.
Does it really grow on wood?
It frequently fruits from well-rotted conifer logs, stumps and buried wood as well as from moss and soil, though it remains dependent on a mycorrhizal partnership with nearby conifers.
