Yellowfoot Chanterelle

A slender late-season funnel with a brown wavy cap, widely spaced grey-yellow forking ridges beneath, and a hollow yellow stipe. It fruits in large troops through moss and conifer litter.
Overview
Craterellus tubaeformis is the small, late-season relative of the golden chanterelle, and one of the most abundant autumn fungi of damp northern woodland. It is built on the same funnel plan but scaled down and lightened: a thin brown cap 2–6 cm across, usually depressed or perforated at the centre so that the hollow of the stipe runs right up through it, and a slim yellow to yellow-brown stem that gives the fungus its English names.
Beneath the cap, instead of true gills, it carries sparse, blunt, forking, cross-veined ridges — greyish, lilac-grey or dull yellow — that run down the stipe. They are much more widely spaced and more vein-like than the crowded ridges of Cantharellus cibarius, and the contrast between grey ridges and a distinctly yellow stem is a good field signature.
The species has been shuffled between Cantharellus and Craterellus and appears in older references under both names as well as Cantharellus infundibuliformis. It fruits in enormous numbers where it occurs, often carpeting mossy banks.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2–6 cm across, convex at first then flat and finally funnel-shaped with a depressed or fully perforated centre, so that many mature specimens are open tubes from the top of the cap to the hollow stipe. The margin is thin, wavy, lobed and often upturned or split. Colour is yellow-brown, tawny, olive-brown to dark greyish-brown, darkest when wet and fading paler in dry weather; the surface is dry and finely felted to slightly scurfy.
False gills
The underside carries blunt, thick, widely spaced ridges that fork and interconnect with cross-veins into a distinctly wrinkled network. They are pale grey, lilac-grey, dull yellow-grey or ochre and run well down the stipe. They are folds of the cap flesh, not separable blades.
Stipe
The stipe is 3–8 cm tall and only 3–10 mm thick, usually hollow — often compressed, grooved or flattened rather than perfectly round — and coloured clear yellow, yellow-orange or ochre-yellow, generally brighter than the cap. It tapers slightly downward and is often curved and bound at the base by moss and white mycelium. There is no ring or volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, pale yellowish to whitish, slightly fibrous and elastic in the cap, with a mild, faintly fruity odour. It does not stain when cut. The spore print is white to pale cream, and the fruiting bodies are noticeably lighter and more fragile than those of the golden chanterelle.
Where and when it grows
This species fruits on the ground in damp, mossy woodland, most abundantly under conifers such as spruce, pine and fir, and also under beech, oak and birch on acid soils. It is very often found on and around decaying wood — mossy stumps, buried logs, fallen branches and rotting needle mats — and troops of hundreds can run along a single old log or across a sphagnum-fringed bank.
Its season is late: fruiting starts in autumn and continues through the first frosts into early winter, sometimes reappearing during mild wet spells long after most woodland fungi have finished, which is the origin of the name Winter Chanterelle. It is widespread across northern and central Europe, northern Asia and North America, being especially common in the boreal and montane conifer belt and in western North American coastal forest.
Ecological role
Craterellus tubaeformis is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheaths on the fine roots of conifers and some broadleaf trees and trading soil-derived nutrients for tree sugars. Unusually for a mycorrhizal fungus, it is closely associated with well-rotted wood and deep moss, where its mycelium runs through the decaying material while remaining connected to living tree roots — the rotten log acts as a moist rooting medium rather than as the substrate it decays.
This affinity for moss and decaying wood, combined with cold tolerance, gives it an exceptionally long fruiting window at the end of the season. Its fruiting bodies are thin and quick to appear, and a single patch can produce successive flushes over several weeks. Because the mycelium is tied both to living roots and to the moisture held by rotting wood, populations decline where woodland is cleared of deadwood or where the moss layer is stripped.
Similar species
Cantharellus cibarius is larger, uniformly egg-yellow, with a solid stipe and thick white fibrous flesh, and its ridges are crowded and the same colour as the cap. C. tubaeformis is smaller, brown-capped, with a hollow yellow stipe and sparse grey ridges. Craterellus lutescens (and the closely related C. ignicolor) has a similar hollow stem but a smoother, nearly ridge-free underside and a warmer orange-yellow overall colour.
Craterellus cornucopioides, the Horn of Plenty, shares the trumpet shape but is dark grey to blackish-brown throughout with an almost smooth, faintly wrinkled underside and no yellow anywhere. Small brown Omphalina and Arrhenia species growing in moss have thin, true, blade-like gills that separate from the cap flesh, and their caps are not funnel-perforated in the same way. Checking for a hollow yellow stem, blunt vein-like ridges and a brown funnel cap will settle it.
