A slim woodland dapperling with a shaggy ochre-brown scaly cap and a stem sheathed below the ring in loose yellow woolly veil, brightest toward the base. Its large spindle-shaped spores give the species its name.

Overview

Lepiota magnispora is one of the shaggier members of the dapperling genus, a group of small to medium white-spored Agaricaceae whose caps break into scales and whose stems carry a ring or ring zone rather than a firm collar. The specific epithet refers to the spores, which are unusually large and drawn out into a spindle or bullet shape, and it is these that historically separated the species from its close relatives.

In the field the mushroom is recognised by the contrast between its dark, fibrous-scaly cap and the loose, cottony yellow-ochre wool that clothes the lower stem. Where that wool is thickest, near the base, the stem takes on a distinctly yellow tone that gives the species its English name; the upper stem above the vanishing ring zone stays pale and smooth.

The name Lepiota ventriosospora has long been applied to the same or very similar material, and the two are now widely treated as one variable species. It is a woodland fungus, appearing among fallen needles and leaves rather than in the open grassland favoured by the larger parasols.

How to identify it

Cap

3-8 cm across, conical to bell-shaped when young, expanding to convex or flat with a broad low umbo. The centre is a solid ochre, tawny or rusty-brown patch of intact cuticle, and from it the surface breaks outward into coarse woolly fibrils and small recurved scales over a cream to pale buff ground. The margin is often hung with pale yellowish veil fragments in young specimens and may split radially in age.

Gills

Free from the stem, crowded, soft, white to pale cream, sometimes acquiring a faint yellowish cast where bruised. The gill edges are finely floccose under a lens.

Stipe

5-10 cm tall and 5-10 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly enlarged toward the base, hollow, whitish and smooth above, and below the ring zone densely covered in loose, cottony, ochre-yellow to tawny woolly veil that forms shaggy bands or a continuous sheath. The yellow tone strengthens toward the base. There is no firm membranous ring; instead the veil leaves a woolly, poorly defined zone that is easily rubbed away.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh white to pale yellowish, thin, unchanging or very slightly discolouring in the stem base. The spore print is white; the spores are notably large and fusiform - spindle-shaped, often slightly swollen on one side - which distinguishes the species microscopically from its nearest relatives.

Where and when it grows

The Yellowfoot Dapperling grows on rich leaf and needle litter in woodland, most often under conifers such as spruce, pine and fir, but also under beech, oak and other broadleaves, and in mixed plantations. It prefers shaded, humus-rich ground and appears singly or in small scattered groups along path edges, in mossy litter and among fallen needles.

It is widespread through temperate Europe and North America, with records across northern Asia, and is a regular if never abundant autumn find. Fruiting runs from late summer into mid-autumn, following periods of steady rain, and the delicate woolly veil is quickly washed off, so fresh specimens show the yellow stem sheathing far better than weathered ones.

Ecological role

This species is a litter saprotroph. Its mycelium colonises the partly decayed leaves, needles and fine woody fragments of the forest floor, breaking down cellulose and lignin-rich debris and incorporating it into humus. It has no mycorrhizal relationship with the surrounding trees, though it depends on them indirectly for the annual supply of litter.

Because the litter layer is patchy and quickly consumed, dapperling colonies tend to be small and shifting, appearing in slightly different spots along the same path or slope from one year to the next. The abundant woolly veil probably serves to protect the developing gills in an environment where the fruiting body pushes up through wet packed litter.

Similar species

Lepiota clypeolaria, the Shield Dapperling, is the closest match, with a similar scaly cap and woolly stem, but its stem wool is whitish to pale cream rather than distinctly ochre-yellow and its spores are smaller and less strongly spindle-shaped. Lepiota cristata is much smaller, with sparse flat reddish-brown scales in neat concentric rings on a white cap and an almost smooth stem.

Lepiota castanea is smaller still and dressed in fine chestnut granular scales, while Echinoderma asperum is far bulkier with erect pyramidal spines on the cap and a firmer ring. Cystolepiota species are tiny and coated in a powdery mealy bloom rather than woolly fibrils.
