Yellowing Brittlegill Identification Guide

A field routine for Russula puellaris, the small, fragile, wine-brown brittlegill of mossy conifer woods whose whole fruit body discolours ochre-yellow with age and handling.

First Impressions in Mossy Conifer Woodland

Picture a damp spruce wood with a deep moss floor, or the boggy margin of a conifer plantation where sphagnum creeps in. Among the moss sits a small mushroom with a dark, wine-brown cap barely wider than a bottle top, on a short white stalk. Pick it up carelessly and it snaps in your fingers. Come back to the same spot the next day and the mushroom has gone a dirty ochre-yellow all over, as though it had been dipped in weak tea and left to dry.

That combination of small size, fragility and comprehensive yellowing is the whole identification in one sentence. The paragraphs below break it into checkable steps.

Confirming the Genus First

Before worrying about species, confirm you are in the brittlegills. Snap the stipe across: it should break cleanly and abruptly, with a chalky or crumbly fracture, because the flesh is built largely from rounded cells rather than fibres. Bend a gill with a fingertip and it shatters rather than folding. Check the broken surface for liquid: none should appear, which separates the brittlegills from the milkcaps, whose relatives share the same brittle construction but bleed. There is no ring and no volva.

Reading the Cap

Caps are small, typically 2 to 5 cm across and rarely more than 6 cm. They start convex, flatten, and end shallowly depressed at the centre.

Colour sits in the dark end of the purple-brown range: vinaceous, wine-brown, date-brown, dull chocolate-purple, usually darkest over the disc and lightening toward the rim, where olive, tan or yellowish tones creep in with age. Rain-washed caps fade considerably, so judge colour on a sheltered specimen.

Two textures matter. The cuticle is slightly viscid when wet and matt when dry, and it peels easily, coming away over two thirds of the radius or almost to the centre. The margin becomes strongly striate at maturity, with the grooves raised into little bumps between them, a tuberculate-striate edge that is easy to see in profile against the light. That grooved margin reflects the very thin flesh and is a consistent character here.

Gills, Stipe and the Yellowing

The gills are attached narrowly to almost free, moderately spaced rather than crowded, fragile, and pale cream at first. They discolour ochre and finally rusty-ochre in patches, particularly along the edges and wherever they have been touched. Occasional forking occurs near the stipe, and the gill edge is even.

The stipe is 2 to 5 cm long and 0.5 to 1.2 cm thick, white and finely wrinkled at first, cylindrical or slightly club-shaped. It quickly becomes spongy and then hollow inside, and it is remarkably fragile for its size.

Now the defining reaction. Handle the stipe firmly and set the mushroom aside for half an hour. The white surface flushes a distinct ochre to honey-yellow, typically starting at the base and travelling upward. Mature fruit bodies do this without help, so a troop of older specimens looks uniformly yellowed while the youngest button beside them is still white and wine-capped. The flesh in section yellows too, so a longitudinal cut left on a windowsill develops an ochre face.

Flesh and Section

Cut a fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is white, very thin, and so brittle that a blunt blade will crush rather than slice it. The stipe interior shows a spongy pith becoming a cavity. Apart from the ochre-yellow discolouration there is no other reaction; nothing turns pink, grey, green or black. The odour is faint and unremarkable, occasionally slightly fruity.

Taking and Reading the Spore Print

Spore print colour is central to brittlegill identification and worth doing properly. Because the caps are small and thin, use several. Cut them free of the stipes, arrange them gill-side down on white paper or white card, cover with a bowl to hold humidity, and leave them overnight in a cool room.

Read the result in daylight, not artificial light, after scraping the powder into a compact heap with a blade so the colour reads at full strength. The deposit here is pale cream to a slightly warmer ochre-cream, clearly not pure white and clearly not the deep egg-yellow of some relatives. Comparing the heap against a plain white sheet edge makes the difference obvious.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a mycorrhizal species that partners with tree roots and fruits from soil. Its strongholds are damp conifer woodland, spruce above all, and it also appears with pine and in mixed woods with birch. Look in moss carpets, needle litter, peaty ground and the fringes of wet hollows. Well-drained, dry, calcareous ground is not its habitat.

Fruiting runs through summer and autumn, often responding quickly to rain. Fruit bodies appear singly or in scattered small groups rather than dense troops, and they are short-lived, collapsing or being eaten within a few days, which is one reason the yellowed late-stage form is so often the one people find.

Separating the Look-alikes on Structure

Size, fragility and the overall yellowing do most of the work, but a few relatives need care.

Russula nauseosa shares conifer habitat and an ochre-cream spore print, but its cap tends toward grey-lilac, purple-grey or brownish-purple with more olive shading, its stipe stays white far longer, and the whole fruit body does not go comprehensively ochre.

Russula versicolor is a birch associate with a variable green, purple and olive mottled cap and firmer construction.

Russula betularum is a pale, delicate birch species with a whitish-pink cap and a white spore print, and it does not yellow.

Russula fragilis is similarly fragile but has a finely serrated, notched gill edge visible under a lens and a white to pale cream print.

Russula sphagnophila grows in wet sphagnum with a taller, more slender build and a pinkish-brown cap that lacks the deep vinaceous tone.

Russula xerampelina and its allies also discolour ochre-brown, but they are far larger and firmer, with a substantial stipe, and they carry a strong fishy odour that is impossible to miss.

Field Notes to Record

Note cap width, how far the cuticle peels, how strongly the margin is grooved, the state of yellowing on the youngest and oldest fruit bodies present, the conifer species overhead, and the spore print colour judged in daylight. Photograph a young and an old fruit body side by side, since the pair illustrates the yellowing better than either alone.

Common questions

How yellow does this brittlegill actually become?
Distinctly so. The white stipe flushes ochre to honey-yellow, usually from the base upward, the gills stain ochre along their edges, and cut flesh develops an ochre face. Old fruit bodies can look almost uniformly yellow-brown.
Could a small specimen just be a young example of a larger brittlegill?
