Overview

Zeller's Bolete is one of the most visually recognisable small boletes of the Pacific coast of North America. It was long placed in Boletus and then in Xerocomus, but molecular work moved it into the genus Xerocomellus, a group of slender, dry-capped boletes with soft flesh, relatively large angular pores, and stems that lack a net-like reticulum.

What sets it apart from its relatives is the sheer darkness of the cap. While most Xerocomellus species are various shades of dull brown or olive, X. zelleri is close to blackish-brown or very deep olive-black, with a matte, finely velvety surface that can look almost suede-like when fresh. A narrow paler yellowish or whitish band frequently runs around the cap margin, and the whole cap is often subtly wrinkled or bumpy rather than smooth.

In the wider fungal world it sits in the Boletaceae, the family of tube-bearing mushrooms that includes the porcini and the scaber stalks. Like most members of that family, it forms a mutualistic root partnership with trees rather than rotting dead wood, and its fruiting bodies appear as short-lived seasonal outgrowths of a much longer-lived underground mycelium.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is roughly 4 to 12 cm across, at first strongly convex and later flattening or becoming slightly irregular. Its colour is a very dark olive-brown to blackish-brown, sometimes with reddish or vinaceous tints as it ages. The surface is dry and finely velvety, often becoming faintly cracked in older or sun-dried specimens, and typically bears a thin pale yellowish to whitish marginal band.

Pores

The underside is a tube layer rather than gills. Tubes are bright to dull yellow, becoming olive-yellow with age, and the pore mouths are relatively large and angular. The pore surface bruises blue to blue-green fairly readily where pressed or scratched, though the reaction can be slow in dry weather.

Stipe

The stem is 4 to 10 cm tall, roughly equal in width or tapering slightly downward, yellow at the apex and heavily overlaid with red, pinkish, or brick streaks and fine granular dots over most of its length. It is not reticulate, and there is no ring and no volva. The extreme base is often yellow and may be attached to conspicuous yellowish mycelial threads.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is soft, pale yellow, and turns blue rather weakly and patchily when cut, often only in the upper stem and the layer directly above the tubes. The spore print is olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

Zeller's Bolete is a western North American species, common from British Columbia south through Washington, Oregon, and into California. It fruits in coastal and montane coniferous forest, and is particularly associated with Douglas-fir, but is also found near Sitka spruce, western hemlock, coast redwood, and in mixed stands with hardwoods.

It often appears in deep conifer needle duff, in moss, along mossy roadside banks and trail edges, and quite characteristically in landscaping bark and wood-chip mulch in gardens and parks where conifer roots are present. Fruiting follows the onset of the wet season, generally from early autumn through to midwinter in mild coastal areas.

Ecological role

Like nearly all Boletaceae, Xerocomellus zelleri is ectomycorrhizal. Its mycelium sheathes the fine feeder roots of host conifers, forming an interface across which the fungus supplies water, phosphorus, and nitrogen drawn from the soil and litter, and receives sugars manufactured by the tree in return. This partnership is a major reason conifers thrive on the thin, nutrient-locked soils typical of Pacific coast forests.

The fruiting bodies themselves are reproductive structures produced when temperature and moisture conditions are right. Spores released from the tubes are dispersed by air currents, while the fleshy caps also feed slugs, beetles, and fly larvae, which help disperse spores incidentally. Its frequent appearance in wood-chip mulch suggests a fungus tolerant of disturbed, human-modified ground so long as a compatible root partner is nearby.

Similar species

Xerocomellus chrysenteron, the red cracking bolete, is the nearest confusion. It has a much paler, dull olive-brown to tan cap that cracks into a mosaic revealing pinkish-red flesh in the fissures, whereas X. zelleri is far darker and only cracks late and shallowly. Xerocomellus dryophilus has a distinctly brick-red to rosy cap and grows with oaks rather than conifers.

Aureoboletus mirabilis shares a dark red-brown cap and conifer habitat in the same region, but its cap is coarsely fibrillose to shaggy, its stem is thicker and often distinctly reticulate near the top, and it fruits on well-rotted hemlock wood. Xerocomellus atropurpureus and related dark forms differ in cap tint and marginal banding, and the pale rim around the cap edge combined with the strongly red-streaked, non-reticulate stem remains the most reliable field pointer to X. zelleri.
