Hydnellum concrescens

A thin, tough toothed fungus whose flattened cap is marked with strong concentric bands of pink, white and brown. Neighbouring fruiting bodies often fuse into irregular sheets across the woodland floor.
Overview
Zoned Tooth is among the most frequently encountered Hydnellum species and the easiest to recognise, thanks to the bold concentric banding across its cap. The bands record the fungus's growth: each ring marks a phase of expansion, with the freshest, palest tissue always at the outer edge and progressively older, darker tissue toward the centre. The species name refers to its habit of growing together, since adjacent caps commonly fuse into irregular composite plates.
Like all Hydnellum it belongs to the Thelephorales and produces brown, warted spores on spines rather than gills. Its flesh is tough and leathery to corky rather than fleshy, and dried fruiting bodies can persist on the forest floor for months, gradually darkening to near black.
The species is a well-known indicator of low-nutrient woodland soils. It is one of the stipitate hydnoids monitored in European conservation surveys, because populations disappear where soils are enriched by nitrogen or disturbed by heavy machinery.
How to identify it
Cap
Usually 2-7 cm across but often much wider where several caps merge. The shape is flat to shallowly funnel-shaped, and the surface is radially fibrous and finely velvety, drying matted. The colouring is the key feature: distinct concentric zones running from a white to pale pink actively growing margin inward through pinkish-brown to reddish-brown and finally dark brown at the centre. Caps frequently fuse laterally into wavy compound masses.
Spines
The underside bears fine, crowded, decurrent spines 1-3 mm long that run down onto the stalk. They begin whitish to pale pink and mature through pinkish-brown to a deep purple-brown.
Stipe
Short and often tapering downward, 1-4 cm tall and up to 1 cm thick, brown to reddish-brown, felted, and usually merging with litter and moss at the base. In fused specimens the stalks may be irregular or barely distinguishable.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, tough and leathery to corky, showing faint concentric zoning in vertical section and reddish-brown to purplish-brown colouring. Young moist specimens may show small watery to reddish droplets on the cap surface. The spore print is brown, with subglobose, coarsely tuberculate spores.
Where and when it grows
This species grows on the ground in both broadleaf and coniferous woodland, particularly on thin, sandy, acidic or otherwise nutrient-poor soils. Beech and oak woods on sandy or chalky ground, and pine and spruce plantations on heathland soils, are all productive. It frequently appears along shaded banks, track edges and eroded slopes where the litter layer is thin, forming troops of fused caps that spread across bare ground.
Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, with weathered remains persisting long afterwards. The species is widespread across Europe, occurs across temperate and boreal Asia, and is represented in North America by very similar material, though as with many hydnoids the North American populations include several closely related taxa.
Ecological role
Hydnellum concrescens is an ectomycorrhizal partner of trees, associating with oak and beech among broadleaves and with pine and spruce among conifers. The fungal sheath around the fine roots increases the volume of soil a tree can exploit, delivering phosphorus, nitrogen and water in exchange for sugars, an arrangement that is especially valuable on the impoverished soils this species inhabits.
Its perennial mycelium spreads slowly and persistently, and the fruiting bodies grow by expanding at the margin, engulfing grass stems, moss and litter as they go. The concentric zones are essentially a growth record laid down by that process. Because the fungus responds poorly to added nitrogen, its persistence on a site indicates soils that have remained unenriched and physically undisturbed for a long time.
Similar species
Hydnellum scrobiculatum is the closest match: it is thicker and more strongly pitted or furrowed across the cap, with less crisply defined banding and a stouter build. Bleeding Tooth (Hydnellum peckii) is superficially similar when old but young specimens exude conspicuous bright red droplets across a white cap surface. Hydnellum ferrugineum is thicker-fleshed, more uniformly pinkish-brown and also produces reddish droplets when fresh.
Woolly Tooth (Phellodon tomentosus) mimics the zoned funnel-shaped profile closely but is thinner and more leathery, paler cinnamon-brown, and drops a white spore print rather than brown. Coltricia perennis shares the zoned funnel-shaped cap and similar habitat but has a pored underside instead of spines, which settles it immediately.
