Haymaker's Mushroom

Panaeolus foenisecii

Type: gilled mushroom

Haymaker's Mushroom

Physical Characteristics

The mushroom typically has a small, conical to bell-shaped cap, often with a papilla (a small nipple-like protrusion) in the center. The cap color can range from light brown to tan, sometimes becoming paler towards the margin. It is hygrophanous, meaning its color changes depending on moisture content; it's darker when wet and fades to a cream or buff color when dry. The gills are adnate to adnexed, closely spaced, and start off pale, becoming brownish as spores mature. The stem is slender, pale, and often somewhat translucent, lacking a ring. Spore print color is dark purplish-brown to black.

Habitat & Growing Conditions

Commonly found growing solitarily or in small groups on lawns, pastures, meadows, and other grassy areas, especially those that are well-fertilized or have been disturbed. It thrives in rich, nitrogenous soil.

Season & Fruiting Time

Typically found from spring through autumn, especially after rain, particularly common in late spring and early summer, and again in early fall.

Similar Looking Species

Can be confused with other small, dark-spored grassland mushrooms, including other species within the genus Panaeolus, such as Panaeolus cinctulus. It can also be mistaken for species of Psilocybe, though key distinguishing features include the spore print color and the absence of bluing reactions typical of some Psilocybe species. Careful examination of cap shape, gill attachment, and spore print is necessary for accurate identification.

Ecological Role

Saprophytic, meaning it obtains nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter. It plays an important role in nutrient cycling in grassy ecosystems by breaking down dead plant material.

Safety reminder

AI mushroom identification is a best-effort estimate and can be wrong. Never use it to decide whether a mushroom is safe to handle or eat — always confirm with a qualified mycologist before any consumption.
