Clustered Bonnet
Mycena inclinata
Type: gilled mushroom

Physical Characteristics
Caps are typically 1-4 cm in diameter, bell-shaped to conical when young, flattening with age, often with a central umbo. Color varies from brownish to grayish-brown, sometimes with purplish or olive tints, often paler towards the margin. The surface can be greasy or slimy when moist, then becoming dry and silky. Gills are adnexed to adnate, closely spaced, white to grayish, sometimes developing reddish-brown spots with age. Stems are 3-8 cm long and 2-5 mm thick, tough, hollow, often fusiform (spindle-shaped) at the base where they attach to the wood. They are typically paler at the apex, becoming darker brown to reddish-brown towards the base, often covered in fine whitish hairs near the base. Spore print is white.
Habitat & Growing Conditions
This mushroom is saprophytic, growing in dense clusters on dead hardwood (especially oak), stumps, logs, and woody debris. It thrives in deciduous forests.
Season & Fruiting Time
Typically found from late summer through late autumn, especially after periods of rain.
Similar Looking Species
Several other Mycena species can look similar, such as Mycena galericulata (Rosy Bonnet) which typically has a less robust, more grayish stem and often grows on coniferous wood, though it can also be found on hardwoods. Mycena haematopus (Bleeding Mycena) exudes a reddish latex when cut. Differentiation often requires close examination of microscopic features and smell.
Ecological Role
Mycena inclinata is a saprophytic fungus, playing a crucial role in the decomposition of dead hardwood, particularly oak. It breaks down complex organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil and contributing to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. This decomposition process helps to clear fallen wood and enrich the forest floor.
Safety reminder
AI mushroom identification is a best-effort estimate and can be wrong. Never use it to decide whether a mushroom is safe to handle or eat — always confirm with a qualified mycologist before any consumption.
