Fairy Bonnets

Mycena spp.

Type: Gilled mushroom

Fairy Bonnets

Physical Characteristics

These are very small, delicate mushrooms. The caps are typically conical to bell-shaped, sometimes expanding to broadly convex or plano-convex with age, often with a small central umbo. They vary in color (from whitish to gray, brown, or yellowish-brown), often transparently striate to the margin when moist. The gills are adnate to adnexed or free, widely spaced to crowded, and whitish to grayish. The stems are slender, fragile, hollow, and typically white to grayish or concolorous with the cap. Spore print is white.

Habitat & Growing Conditions

Mycena species are saprophytic, meaning they grow on dead wood, leaves, pine needles, and other organic debris in forests and woodlands. They often appear in large numbers, sometimes in troops or scattered groups on well-rotted logs, stumps, or leaf litter.

Season & Fruiting Time

Generally found from late spring through fall, and even into winter in milder climates, especially after periods of rain. Their appearance is highly dependent on moisture levels.

Similar Looking Species

There are numerous species within the Mycena genus, many of which look very similar and are difficult to distinguish without microscopic examination. Other small, delicate mushrooms like some species of Marasmius or Galerina might be superficially similar, but typically have different gill attachments, stem characteristics, or spore print colors.

Ecological Role

Mycena species are important decomposers (saprophytes), breaking down dead organic matter, particularly wood and leaf litter. This process recycles nutrients back into the ecosystem, making them available for other organisms. They contribute significantly to the health and nutrient cycling of forest environments.

Safety reminder

AI mushroom identification is a best-effort estimate and can be wrong. Never use it to decide whether a mushroom is safe to handle or eat — always confirm with a qualified mycologist before any consumption.
