Clustered Bonnet
Mycena inclinata
Type: gilled mushroom

Physical Characteristics
The caps are typically bell-shaped to conical, becoming broadly conical or campanulate with age, often with a small central umbo. They are hygrophanous, meaning they change color with moisture, appearing reddish-brown or grayish-brown when wet and fading to a pale grayish-tan or buff when dry. The caps are usually striated (lined) near the margin. Gills are adnexed (narrowly attached to the stem) or free, close to subdistant, and whitish to grayish, sometimes developing reddish-brown spots with age. The stem is slender, tough, and often twisted, typically yellowish-brown to reddish-brown at the base, becoming paler towards the apex. The base of the stem is usually hairy or fuzzy with white mycelium. Spore print is white.
Habitat & Growing Conditions
Found growing in dense clusters on decaying hardwood, especially oak, stumps, logs, and woody debris. They are common in deciduous and mixed forests.
Season & Fruiting Time
Typically found from late summer to late autumn, especially after periods of rain.
Similar Looking Species
Other species of Mycena can look similar, but Mycena inclinata is distinguished by its clustered growth on decaying hardwood (especially oak), its bell-shaped to conical, striated caps that change color with moisture, gills that often develop reddish spots, and its hairy stem base. Mycena galericulata is a larger species, often with a more prominent umbo, and typically fruits on broadleaf wood. Mycena arcangeliana is similar but has a more olive-brown cap and yellow stem.
Ecological Role
Mycena inclinata is a saprophytic fungus, meaning it obtains nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter. It plays a crucial role in nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems by breaking down woody debris, helping to return essential elements to the soil.
Safety reminder
AI mushroom identification is a best-effort estimate and can be wrong. Never use it to decide whether a mushroom is safe to handle or eat — always confirm with a qualified mycologist before any consumption.
