Agaricus bohusii Identification Guide

A field-worker's walkthrough for recognising Agaricus bohusii, the densely clustered dark-scaled Agaricus of rich hedge-bottom and parkland soils, and for telling it apart from the other scaly brown-spored species it grows beside.

The First Impression

You almost never meet Agaricus bohusii as a single mushroom. The usual encounter is a crowded clump, sometimes ten or twenty fruit bodies welded together at their bases, shouldering each other out of shape so that the caps are lopsided and the stipes bend outward like the spokes of a badly made wheel. From a few metres away the clump reads as a pale mass flecked with dark brown, and it is that combination of tight caespitose habit plus dark fibrillose scaling that should start the identification.

The setting matters as much as the mushroom. Think of enriched, often calcareous ground on the edge of things: the bottom of an old hedge, a strip of nettles beside a farm track, a poplar or elm avenue in a park, the shaded margin of a path where leaf litter and soil have been piled for years. It is a species of warm late summer and autumn, and in much of its range it appears in the same spot year after year once you have found it.

Reading the Cap

Take one of the outer, better-shaped fruit bodies rather than a crushed inner one. Young caps are ovoid to barrel-shaped and expand to convex, then broadly flattened, usually 6-15 cm across but capable of more in a well-fed clump.

The ground colour is whitish to pale ochre. Over that, look for fibrillose scales in shades of dark brown, sepia or almost blackish-brown. They are densest and most nearly continuous over the centre, where they can form an unbroken dark disc, and they break up outward into separate triangular or squarish patches with pale ground showing between them. The scaling is appressed, not shaggy or recurved; run a finger over it and it feels like felted fibres rather than raised flakes.

The margin often carries hanging fragments of the partial veil in young specimens. In dry conditions the cap can crack radially between the scales, exaggerating the pattern.

Gills and the Spore Print

Turn the cap over. The gills are free from the stipe, leaving a narrow collar-like gap, and they are crowded, narrow and softly fleshy. Follow their colour sequence carefully, because it is the single fastest way to place a mushroom in Agaricus: pale greyish or greyish-pink in the button, then a clearer dull pink, then a dull purplish brown, and finally very dark brown at full maturity. They are never pure white for long, and they never stay white, which separates the genus at a glance from the parasols.

Confirm with a print. Cut the stipe off flush with the gills, set the cap gill-side down on a sheet that is half white and half black (or on a glass slide over dark card), cover it with a bowl to stop draughts and drying, and leave it three to six hours. The deposit should be a dense dark purple-brown to dark sepia. Anything cream, white, greenish or rust-coloured takes you out of Agaricus entirely.

Stipe, Ring and Base

The stipe is stout, 6-12 cm long and often 1.5-3 cm thick, usually curved because of the crowding, and characteristically tapering downward into a narrowed, sometimes almost rooting base where it fuses with its neighbours. Slice a whole clump vertically through the substrate and you will see the bases converging into a common mass of white mycelium binding soil and litter.

Above the ring the surface is smooth and whitish; below it is fibrillose and often becomes dingy brownish with handling. The ring itself sits high on the stipe, is membranous and pendant, white on the upper face, and frequently carries brownish floccose patches or a faintly patterned underside. It hangs like a skirt rather than sheathing the stipe as a double collar.

Flesh and Colour Change

Split a fruit body lengthwise with a knife and watch the cut surface for several minutes. In A. bohusii the white flesh reddens slowly and often faintly, most noticeably in the stipe cortex and just above the base; some collections show only a dull pinkish flush, others a clearer reddish tone. What you should not see is an immediate, vivid chrome-yellow flare in the cut base, which is the signature of a different group of species. Scratch the base with a fingernail as a second check.

The odour is mild and mushroomy, without the marked almond note of some relatives and without any harsh chemical smell. A drop of dilute potassium hydroxide on the cap surface gives a yellowish reaction, useful as a supporting character but not decisive on its own.

Substrate and Season

Agaricus bohusii is a soil saprotroph on nutrient-enriched, frequently base-rich ground, associated with broadleaved trees such as poplar, elm, ash and lime rather than with conifers. It fruits from late summer into autumn, often after a heavy rain following warm conditions, and its preference for path edges, hedge bottoms, parkland and old gardens means it is as much an urban and agricultural species as a woodland one. The clumped habit is not an accident of crowding but a consistent feature of how the mycelium fruits, and a solitary specimen should make you doubt the identification unless everything else fits.

Separating the Look-alikes

Agaricus subrufescens also fruits in clusters on enriched ground and mulch, but its cap fibrils are finer and warmer in tone, more pinkish- or reddish-brown on a paler ground, and it carries a strong almond-like scent. Its stipe base regularly produces conspicuous white mycelial cords through the substrate.

Agaricus augustus grows singly or in small groups rather than dense clumps, is generally larger and taller, has browner scales on a distinctly yellowish ground, shows a clear yellowing where the cap is rubbed, and smells strongly of almonds.

Agaricus sylvaticus and A. langei redden strongly and quickly on cutting, sometimes almost blood-red, and they are woodland litter species that appear scattered rather than fused into clumps.

Agaricus moelleri and A. xanthodermus have grey-brown fibrils on a whitish ground, or an almost smooth white cap, but they give themselves away with an instant bright yellow flush in the cut stipe base and an unpleasant inky, phenolic odour.

Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum species can be superficially similar in scaling, but their gills stay white or turn greyish-green rather than pink then brown, and their spore prints are white, cream or dull green.

A Working Sequence

Note the clump. Photograph the scaling pattern in situ. Cut one fruit body lengthwise, watch for a slow reddening and the absence of a yellow base flare, smell the cut flesh, then take a print overnight. If you have a dense caespitose group on rich soil under broadleaved trees, with dark sepia appressed scales, free gills passing pink to dark brown, a pendant ring, a tapering fused base and a dark purple-brown print, you are on firm ground.
