Angel Wings Identification Guide
A practical walk-through of Pleurocybella porrigens: pure white pliant fans on rotting conifer wood, with crowded narrow gills, no real stipe, and a set of morphological tests that separate it from the oysters.
The first impression
Angel Wings is a fungus you usually notice from a distance, because a colony behaves like a scatter of white paper stuck to dark wood. Picture a mossy, bark-free spruce or hemlock log lying in a damp coniferous forest in autumn, with clean white fans emerging in overlapping tiers along its upper flank and sides. Individually the fruitbodies are two to ten centimetres across, thin, and shaped like a shell, an ear, a spoon or a spreading fan, with the wide edge free and the narrow point fixed directly to the wood. They are pure white, sometimes ageing to ivory or the faintest cream, and they are conspicuously floppy rather than firm.
Before touching anything, note two things about the setting. First, the substrate is conifer, and specifically conifer that is well into its decay: bark shed, wood soft and pale, often already moss-covered. Second, the habitat tends to be cool and damp, in upland, montane or northern forests. Those two facts do a lot of the identification work before you have examined a single character.
Working through the fruitbody
Shape and attachment. Take a fruitbody in your hand and look at how it meets the log. There is no central stem. Attachment is lateral, at a single narrow point or along a short, slightly narrowed extension that you could call a rudimentary stipe, and at that point you will often see a small patch of fine white down or matted hairs. The fan may be nearly flat, gently spoon-shaped, or with a channel running from the attachment to the outer margin. The margin is inrolled when young, then wavy, lobed and frequently split or torn in older specimens.
Upper surface. Smooth, dry to slightly moist in humid weather, matt to faintly silky, without scales, warts or a gelatinous skin. Colour stays white, but drought will yellow the edges and old fruitbodies stain buff or dingy cream where they have collapsed against one another.
The spore-bearing surface. Turn it over. The gills are the key structure here: white and staying white, very narrow, very crowded, radiating outward from the point of attachment like the ribs of a fan. They are decurrent in the sense that they converge and run right down to the insertion point rather than stopping short. They fork sparingly, and their edges are even under a hand lens, not serrated or dark-lined. The overall look is fine and dense, closer to the grain of a fan than to the broad, widely spaced blades of an oyster.
Flesh. Cut the fan in cross-section and measure the thickness. This is the single most useful tactile test. The flesh is very thin, usually one to three millimetres even near the attachment, soft, pliable, faintly watery-white, and it bends without snapping. It does not change colour on cutting. Look at the cut edge carefully with a lens: there is no separate rubbery or gelatinous layer under the cap surface. Its absence matters, because that layer is diagnostic for one group of look-alikes.
Base. Scrape away moss at the attachment. You are looking for white mycelium spreading through the soft wood, and often for the fruitbody arising directly from a crack or an old wound. There is no volva, no ring, no bulb.
Taking a spore print
Because there is no stipe to cut, set the whole fan gill-side down on a sheet of dark card or, better, on a card that is half black and half white so a pale deposit is unambiguous. Cover it with a bowl to hold humidity and leave it for six to twelve hours at room temperature. A fresh, actively sporing specimen will give a print quickly; a sun-dried one may give nothing, so pick a fruitbody from the shaded underside of the log.
The print is white, occasionally reading as the very faintest cream. That result matters most for excluding the small brown-spored fan fungi. If your print comes out clay-brown, snuff-coloured or ochre, you are not looking at this species.
Substrate and season
Angel Wings is a decayer of dead conifer wood, most often spruce and hemlock, also fir and occasionally pine. It works on logs, stumps, large fallen branches and buried wood in an advanced stage of white rot, and it is essentially restricted to wood that has already lost its bark and gone soft. Fruiting is late summer to late autumn, typically peaking after the first cool wet spells, and colonies can be enormous, with dozens of overlapping fans running the length of a single log. It is a fungus of moist, shaded, closed-canopy conifer forest, and it is much scarcer in warm lowland or broadleaf-dominated woodland.
Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone
Pleurotus ostreatus, the oyster, is the main confusion. Its cap is greyish, brownish, tan, blue-grey or occasionally near-white but rarely the flat chalk-white of Angel Wings, and the difference in build is decisive: the oyster is thick and fleshy, often five to fifteen millimetres of firm flesh at the attachment, while Angel Wings is papery. Oyster gills are broader, more widely spaced and often run down onto a short but real lateral stipe. Oysters are mostly on broadleaved wood, especially beech, poplar and willow.
Pleurotus pulmonarius is paler and thinner than the common oyster, so it is the closer of the two, but it still has noticeably thicker flesh, broader gills, a more distinct short stipe, and it favours hardwood in warmer months.
Hohenbuehelia species look similar from above but betray themselves in section: a distinct gelatinous, rubbery layer sits beneath the cap surface, visible as a translucent band when you slice the flesh. Their flesh is also tougher.
Crepidotus species are typically smaller, softer, often with a more gelatinous or hygrophanous cap, they usually grow on broadleaved wood, and above all they drop a brown to ochre-brown spore print. The print settles it.
Phyllotopsis nidulans is orange to orange-buff with a densely hairy cap surface, so colour alone separates it.
Panellus stipticus is small, tan to buff, tough and leathery with a short distinct lateral stipe, on hardwood. Panellus serotinus has an olive-green to greenish-brown cap and a stubby stipe.
Cheimonophyllum candidissimum is also white and stipeless on wood, but it is much smaller, seldom exceeding two centimetres, with fewer and more widely spaced gills.
Pleurotus dryinus is white but far more substantial, has a veil that leaves fibres on the margin, a well-developed off-centre stipe, and grows on standing hardwoods.
