A rich bay-brown bolete whose lemon-yellow pores flush blue-green within seconds of being touched. The stipe is brown-streaked and lacks the raised netting of the King Bolete.
Overview
Bay Bolete (Imleria badia) is one of the commonest medium-sized boletes of northern conifer woodland and a useful species for learning to read colour-change reactions. Its cap is a deep, even chestnut or bay brown, its pore surface a soft lemon to greenish yellow, and pressing that pore surface produces an immediate blue-green stain that is among the most reliable field reactions in the whole group.
For most of its taxonomic history it was placed in Boletus as B. badius, but molecular studies showed it to sit apart from the true ceps, and it was transferred to the genus Imleria in 2014. The genus is small, with a handful of species in Europe, Asia and North America sharing the smooth brown cap, blueing pores and non-reticulate stipe.
It is a resilient and abundant fungus, tolerant of poor sandy and peaty soils, common in commercial conifer plantations, and often fruiting late in the season when richer woodland species have finished. It is unusual among boletes in frequently growing directly from rotting stumps and buried conifer wood as well as from soil.
How to identify it
Cap
4-15 cm across, convex then flattening, sometimes becoming slightly depressed. The surface is a distinctive deep bay, chestnut or dark red-brown, smooth and finely velvety when dry with a suede-like feel, and noticeably tacky to slightly sticky after rain. The margin is usually even and only slightly incurved.
Pores
The tube layer is pale cream when very young, quickly becoming clear lemon-yellow and then greenish-yellow. Pore mouths are round to slightly angular and moderately small. Touching or pressing them produces a rapid blue to blue-green bruise, developing within a few seconds and often outlining a fingerprint precisely. Tubes are 1-2 cm deep and depressed around the stipe apex.
Stipe
4-12 cm tall and 1-4 cm thick, more slender and more parallel-sided than that of the King Bolete, sometimes slightly swollen below. It is pale ochre to buff at the apex and streaked with brown fibrils over the lower part, frequently with a paler base. Crucially, it has no raised network of any kind, only fine longitudinal fibres.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is whitish to pale lemon, firm in young specimens and softening with age. On cutting it usually turns a slow, weak blue, most noticeably in the layer directly above the tubes, then fades. The spore print is olive-brown.
Where and when it grows
Imleria badia is ectomycorrhizal and shows a strong preference for conifers, above all pine and spruce, though it also occurs with beech, oak and birch in mixed woodland. It thrives on acidic, sandy or peaty soils and is abundant in planted conifer forest, on heathy woodland margins and along forest tracks. Unusually for a mycorrhizal bolete, it often fruits from well-rotted stumps, buried roots and needle-covered woody debris rather than from open ground.
The fruiting season is long, running from late summer through autumn and often continuing into early winter, since the fruiting bodies withstand cold better than many boletes. The species is widespread and common throughout Europe, extends across temperate Asia, and is represented in eastern North America by closely allied populations.
Ecological role
As an ectomycorrhizal symbiont, the Bay Bolete forms fungal sheaths on the short roots of conifers and broadleaves, extending hyphae far into surrounding litter and soil. It is notably efficient at scavenging nutrients from acidic, nutrient-poor substrates, which accounts for its dominance in sandy pine plantations where fewer competing mycorrhizal fungi flourish.
The blue-green staining reaction is caused by the rapid oxidation of pigment compounds in the flesh when they are exposed to air after tissue damage, a process that in this species happens unusually fast and vividly. The fruiting bodies are heavily used by invertebrates and small mammals, and mycelial cords running through the litter allow the fungus to shift resources between root tips and developing fruiting bodies across distances of several metres.
Similar species
King Bolete (Boletus edulis) has a paler, more tan-brown bun-shaped cap, a much stouter swollen stipe bearing a fine raised white network, white pores ageing to olive, and no blue reaction anywhere. Red Cracking Bolete (Xerocomellus chrysenteron) is smaller and softer, with a dull brown cap that cracks into a mosaic revealing pinkish-red flesh in the fissures, distinctly larger and more angular pores, and a slender stipe often flushed red.
Suillus species such as Suillus variegatus and Suillus bovinus share the brown tones and can also blue faintly, but they have a glutinous or granular cap surface in wet conditions and much wider, more angular or compound pore mouths. Sepia Bolete (Xerocomus ferrugineus) has a duller, more olive-brown, velvety cap, whitish mycelium at the stipe base and a much weaker blueing reaction.
